.375 Ruger....

Just received my VX3 2.5-8x36 from Frontier yesterday. I'll install it on my .375 Ruger this weekend. I have low and med ring, we'll what fits best.

I just can't help but notice all the .375 Ruger haters. Why ?

Au contraire ! Love the cartridge !
Have a Savage model 116 SS Alaskan Brush Hunter (20" bbl + 7.6 pounds) in 375 Ruger which is the only 375 magnum I'll carry in the bush all day hunting.
3-9x40mm Leupold Rifleman scope on top.
Punches out 1 1/2" or less 5-shot 100-yard groups all day long with the Hornady 270 grain factory ammo.
Love the gun and the round and the combination is fantastic.

I almost built a 375 ruger on my Belgian FN supreme mauser in 30-06, I decided to leave it as is and search for an FN M70 safari express in 375 H&H. Now I have one on the way :) I don't think there are any flies on each of these calibers, but I'm not much of a ruger fan from poor quality in their rifles I used to have. Now I just need to save money for a trip or two overseas.

Funny how a good med bore or big bore does that, eh? You start to fondle it, roll those big banana cartridges around in your hand and the next thing you know you're on some South African PH website calculating how much you can afford for trophy fees after the 10 or 14 day daily rate. You can actually convince yourself that it really ain't that much money in the big picture of things, then you're checking airfares and hell they're not nearly what you thought they would be............next thing you know you're wiring a deposit to some US bank account and YOU'RE HOOKED..........what you don't know is this is just the first of several trips, cause Africa won't let you get away once you've been...........Welcome to the hunting poor, the addicted, the hopeless African traveler.............all cause you bought a 375 H&H.

How true. I picked up a model 70 Wincnester Super Express in 458WM a few years back and recently acquired a matching partner for it in 375H&H. My Daughter and Son In Law were in Africa for a month a couple of years ago. Now,;) with a little luck on a upcoming Lotto 649 draw................. .

Nice brace of rifles.
You could always hold your guns while day dreaming in front of the TV set and accompany Jim Shockey on his hunts.
That's a close as most of us will ever get to Africa or Alaska outside of a 649 win.
I have a Rem 700 in 416 Rem Mag that I chopped to a 20" bbl, added Williams peep sights and a Timney trigger and set in a Ramline synthetic stock way back in the 90s that I'll probably sell soon.
At my age if I haven't made the African trip yet I probably never will.

Thanks. Punch a bit of paper with them and;) 'clear the cobwebs' every once in a while.

Same here. One trip I did have at the top of the heep is a hunt for Moose in Alaska with a handgun. 500 S&W. Made some inquiries and:) it's something I may have to get serious on.

What is the average price to hunt Africa? 20k? 50k?

I don't know why these guys are saying you need a 649 win. I know lots of guys who have gone who have very average incomes. Just toss $100 away every payday and in 3 or 4 years you can go to Africa.

As to cost. A budget South Africa hunt can be done all in for 8-10k (flights, day rate, trophy fees for a few animals, tip). A more upscale plains game hunt with more animals can be done easily for 15k. Cape buffalo (cheapest dangerous game) can be done on a budget for 15-20k. All these prices include flights and everything else. Obviously more exotic animals or exotic locations go up from there.

People spend that much on a quad, or twice that on a travel trailer, or 4 times that on a truck they use to haul groceries. It really is not something exclusive to the rich.

I handgun hunt in PA, NH and ME all the time.
My last Maine deer was shot with a handgun at 15 yards.
I sold off all my Canadian handguns except for 3 and store my stateside hunting handguns with relatives in Maine.
Handguns in Canada are money tied up for nothing because of the restricted-prohibited :bsFlag: .
I used to live in Alaska and would love to go back and hunt but there again we're talking $$big bucks$$ (and I'm not just referring to the deer).

I'm doing exactly that, every month money gets put aside. My wife likes that if I'm determined to do something, I'll work to make it happen. I just got to put some money into the house and then I can put more money aside from what I'm currently doing now. It will take longer to save enough to bring my wife and two boys, but good memories as a family trip. Then save for a mid asian Ibex hunt.

Haha, I have already been on websites and talked to guys at work that know a few things, its fun just finding info. I just can't get everything in a life size mount cause I'll need more wall space. As long as I don't buy a pimping big truck and a jet boat, then I'm going to Africa.
