i just tried cleaning my AR with a hoppe's viper .22/.223/5.56 boresnake and it was so tight that it ripped apart while trying to pull it through the barrel. has anyone else had this problem?

the boresnake is brand new and so is the gun. i soaked the bore with g96 clp then put the boresnake through it. did i do it wrong?

Yes. The proper way to use a bore snake is to thoroughly soak it in solvent and then deposit it in the nearest garbage can. Those things are crap and have place in any gun cleaning kit.

That's about the best advice that can be given with boresnakes. The only thing I would add is that you should burn the garbage can, it's the only way to be sure.

^Was not aware that there is a 17 caliber boresnake?

For tight bore 22s I purchased a Tipton cleaning rod and a 20 caliber jag. Problem solved.

Edit: I suspect a 17 pull throw, will not even come close to scrubbing a 22 caliber bore.

The hoppe's website says the viper is not available in 17hmr but the regular boresnake is.

I used a boresnake once, but it was to replace my shoelace on my boot when it broke at a bad time........I would never use one on a rifle, but I get a good chuckle watching people use them

used same one with my c7a1 and c7a2 as well as m249 , civilian side I use it with my VZ 58 223/5.56 they work fine could of just been a bad one with todays manufacturing tolerances its not a surprise with anything. I have mine from the CDF and its torn a little and still works great ....

Best advice is to find a gunsmith to massage the POS out of the bore. I have seen more than a few good rifle barrels ruined by bore snakes and the efforts to remove them. Look on the bright side you are not getting charged for using unauthorized cleaning products.

Best advise of the day. :)

I think the majority of the ones that are braking are the vipers. The standard Bore snakes seem to work great for quick field cleaning. I have always avoided the "viper" I feel they are thinner and have a more aggressive brush that causes them to be more prone to fail.

Why cant you just push the snake through if it gets stuck??? MY damn .22 bore bush got stuck in my .22 this weekend, I needed someone to rip the thing out as I held it lol. #### happens with everything. Still don't know why my brush got jammed up, first time using it.
