2015 - My Black Rifle shoots sub-MOA groups all day long challenge! Revised Rules!

I will be on another attempt with my Armalite AR-10T, i did serious load devellopment with the Lapua Scenar 167 gr and the R-15, on my last ladder test i founded a real sweet spot so, it's looking good for the challenge.... JP.:)

Well this is trickier than it looks as I found out shooting this yesterday....

Last week, I mounted a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 on a PWS 12.5" upper over a KAC SR15 lower, took it out and initially zeroed it at 50 yds.
I shot two 5 round groups each of 75gr. Hornady Superformance Match, 69gr. Federal Gold Medal Match, and Hornady 55gr. Vmax Varmint express.
The clear winner was the 75gr. Hornady with a five round clover leaf and four of five shots touching one the second group at 50 yds.
This should be a cakewalk at 100 right?

Fast forward to this week, picked up a second box of ammo to shoot the challenge and got to the range yesterday.
Set up, dialed the scope in for 100M in two rounds, shot three more to make sure, and switched to the challenge target.
The first three 5 round groups went very nicely coming in easily under 1 MOA.
A flag change was called for, so I racked my rifle using the break to let the barrel cool a bit, and opened the second box of ammo.
Little did I know, the wheels had just fallen off...

The first shot on diamond #4 and high and right two inches. WTF? It had been a clean shot and I guess I could live with one flyer.
Shot number two, high 1-1/2 inches. I did a quick check of the scope to make sure it hadn't moved, and checked to make sure I had
loaded the right ammunition.

I shot the last eight rounds as carefully as the others but they grouped at about 3.5 MOA high and right. Looked like I had used a shotgun.
Perhaps the gods were punishing me for being cockey?

I have checked the torque settings on the scope, and inspected the remaining ammo for diameter and concentricity. A cleaning and inspection
of the rifle also revealed no issues. I suspect the ammo to be out of spec (unlikely as that is), but won't be able to confirm until I pick up
another couple of boxes in a few weeks to re-shoot the challenge.

Thoughts anyone?

Start handloading

I hear ya Carson. I tried to do one of the MOA challenge in the Precision section, got 3 nice groups and thought I was on a roll. Groups 4 and 5 look like I was sighting in my scope. Ughhh!

As CR5 pointed out, handloading would help quite a bit. Mind you, some folks have gotten pretty close using surplus ammo.

Start handloading

Well yes, there is that.
Unfortunately time and space issues will not let it happen before mid-winter.

In the meantime, I think I will pick up a couple more boxes of this ammo. Fire a few rounds from each box to see if they vary.
If everything's good, I'll shoot this challenge again.
Despite the mishap, it was kind of fun shooting for repeatable precision.

Is it permitted to do the challenge by hand feeding the AR one round at the time ( to long for the mag )... In my load devellopment by varying my OAL, i did found a sweet spot that gave me outstanding results with my AR-10T... JP.

Have at it JP. No restrictions on how you feed the pigs.

Re: Ar-10t...

Mounted one of my top scope a S&B 5X25X56 PMll then got a try with my handloads, did not succeed the 5/5 but got a 3/5 and everything is quite close, with one group with an incredible .297 MOA for a semi rifle i am just amazed, the load is good and have to be loaded one round at the time as they are to long for the mag... JP.

Damn! That last group was pretty tight. Looks like you found the right load. Hummm, maybe I reconsider that AR10A I was looking at a little while back. lol

This sub .3 MOA is in my mind all the time and more and more i think about it, i realise that the weakest link in the quest for sub .5 MOA successfull challenge is definitly the operator...
If this challenge is to succeed, i or another will have to be in a perfect state mind with ideal conditions...

One group at .3 prove the rifle/scope/ammo combo is capable of this precision, doing it 5 times in a row make the operator the biggest part of the equation, the conditions being variable, they can be choosen at a perfect time...

Trinimon you had a great idea starting this challenge, it's my summer 15 goal... Cheers. JP.

LOL, time to start hitting the range at the crack of dawn when there's no wind and no distractions. Like you say, your rifle has the potential if the operator does his/her part. Worst case, mount it on a sled. :)

Hi guys,

Went to Ruisseau Noir (near Montreal) shooting range today with my ACR. So, here it is....

Rifle: Bushmaster ACR (non-restricted)
Barrel: 18.5" Bartlein stainless 1:8" twist
Munitions: Sierra 55 grn Blitzking loaded with 25.8 grn of Varget, OAL 2.250", brass is a variation of headstamps (nothing fancy)
Bipod: BT10-LW17 V8 Atlas Bipod, sandbag in the back (on pistol grip actually)
Scope: VIPER PST 6-24X50 FFP riflescope
Distance from target: 100 yards
Results: 4/5 are under MOA

Comments: Finally started shooting MOA when I fixed my ergomic issues (the way I was supporting my rifle) and improved my trigger management (just being more stable). I will try for 5/5 as soon as I can. Great contest by the way. A lot of fun!!!!
