DPMS GII Recon .308

Mine was a couple dollars over 2K shipped. $1900 new in Canada.

While not cheap the GII is priced in the bargain section. Although I've noticed the price in the US climb as word gets out about this new version.

Got out to do a little load testing.
Terrible conditions once again, 35+km/hr winds and gusty. But it was enough to give me an idea of what it likes. Seems to prefer 110 vmax and 178 Amax so far.
This was 110 grain vmax with n135 powder in Winchester cases. 220 meters.
Too much fun to shoot, hardly any recoil.

Very nice. You can read the wind from your target. I have a target with the LR308 inbetween 20-30km wind gusts. I was able to shoot inbetween them and had an awesome target but the 4th I fired and the gust hit just before I squeezed the shot off. Straight downwind raised my shot just shy of an inch. I was choked. But it was still fun.

Been stuck doing yard work before it rains tomorrow. Would rather be shooting.

I did however pick up a couple of decent sets of ear protection from Princess auto for yard work/lending at the range. 32DB rating, slight dip at bottom of ear protector more suited for shooting a rifle than the usual cheaper stuff. Here's the real kicker. On sale for $3. I have a nice pelter set but these are great for loaners. I would use them. Thought I'd pass on the value. Living vicariously right now for another week until I can get shooting.

I looked at 308 16" AR series rifles before deciding on an AR10A4, this was the best deal I could find on a Recon which was my comparable.

I'm surprised the end price was close to the 2k that ntm posted. Duty must be a big factor.

That doesn't appear to be a GII model. It seems to be the previous version.

The closest to the A4 you picked is the DPMS

Just to be clear to prospective buyers, there is currently no competition for the g2's.
No other 308 ar does what it does, standard ar15 weight and dimensions, with 308 caliber.
Unproven track record for long term durability would be the only thing that would steer me away from one.
From a shooters standpoint, as far as accuracy, weight, weight balance and ergonomics are concerned, I would take one over any armalite or lmt, and even the kac's.

For a 16" carbine in 308 I agree with ntm. The GII doesn't have the ambi features and the buffer tube is comercial along with a heavier than necessary handguard but ince you get past the middle of the road furniture it is truly unique. My LMT keeps the 20" barrel and my GII takes the role of 16" carbine. The others do feel clunky in comparison to the GII. Although with a DM or target rifle it doesn't matter ss much, if using as a carbine then it's nite and day.

Frankly I don't see the other companies being able to maintain their current systems for more than a couple years if the GII proves reliable. They will have to change to compete. Something I never thought I'd say in the same sentence as DPMS.

I own a G1 DPMS LR308 target rifle and the GII Recon. They seriously should have considered marketting the GII under the Remington name as it is so vastly superior to the previous DPMS products that it really is only DPMS in name only.

I can't stress enough how far ahead this design is for weight and form size compared to the other models in 308. If you're looking for a 16" carbine in 308 the GII is really the best option out there right now.

Thanks for the great info. and accuracy report NTM and backing the facts up to Epoxy7. When the time comes to pull the trigger on an AR10 my decision will be an easy one now thanks to you knowledgeable CGN'ers. The DPMS Recon ll will be it instead of the Armalite I'd originally been wanting.

Came across this thread again. It's been a while. I've been shooting 50 BMG lately so the GII hasn't been out. I know, I know. Too many things on the go right now. I'm also going to be working harder on trying to source the MI handguard for this rifle. The stock one really doesn't do it.

Now that being said... I did receive 5 of the 10 round pistol mags for this rifle. As I previously mentioned I had a problem with the DPMS mag that came with the rifle. IE it didn't fit. Well all 5 of the 10 round pistol mags fit. Three of them drop free. The other two might require a bit of wear before they drop free. So much for the "universal" mag system. I don't have these issues with my Armalite M14 based mags/rifles!! Although Armalite now has the A models that also use the original Armalite AR10 mag or the SR25 mag as the KAC folks are fond of referring to it as. At least I have the 10 round mags, which are also better for target shooting since they sit much lower.

Probably just going to throw a 3-9x on quick release mount to shoot the thing and do some ammo testing. I'll worry about having it fixed up perfect a bit later.

Should add that I handed the rifle over to Lineofsite the other day when showing him it. I conned him into thinking it was a 223 when I handed it over. He was looking it over and knew something wasn't right but it felt like a 223. :p He seemed fairly impressed when I told him it's actually a 308. He's seen and even shot some of my AR308 rifles.

I'm bumping this thread because I don't want to start one to bring up a thought that will most likely just get shouted down and/or ridiculed. Here goes:

It seems to me that the receivers (upper and lower) for the DPMS GII series of .308 modern sporting rifles have different dimensions than standard AR-10 receivers, and are therefore incompatible with standard AR-10 receivers. Would this make the GII series of rifle to not be an AR-10 variant, and therefore not restricted by name?

The reason I bring this up is that this seems to be the situation with ATRS's Modern Hunter, which cosmetically resembles an AR-10, but is deemed to not be an AR-10 variant as its receivers are incompatible with AR-10 receivers.

If the GII is deemed to not be an AR-10 variant, then it would stand to reason that the Hunter and Bull models (with 20" and 24" barrels, respectively), would be non-restricted.

ntm,

Glad to see you have yours! Didn't waste any time. Handguard and flash hider already changed up. Which scopeis that? I'm still waiting for my "source" to come back with the wholesale price for that scope we talked about. That and I'm thinking the MI in 12" keymod will go on mine. Work in progress. I have some Lapua 167 ammo to try. That round was the ticket for my gen1 LR308.

Looking good. Looking forward to getting mine to the range.

My Armalite AR-10T crave those 167 gr Lapua Scenars, they produced some very tight groups, one mesuring .297 MOA 5 shots on the Black rifle Challenge... JP.

No. It's a variant of the DPMS .308 pattern rifles, which are a variant of the AR10 and therefor restricted.

This rifle has been in Canada for a few months now, if there was a push to get it classified as non-restricted it would still be tied up at the RCMP labs.

While the Modern Hunter by ATRS has a few external features that may resemble an AR15/AR10 pattern rifle, it has some extreme differences internally. Different/incompatible bolt and carrier, different barrels, upper and lower that are physically and design-wise different (including the side charging design), and a custom made trigger group as well.

There are way too many things majorly different about the MH it was impossible to classify it as a variant. And from the get-go ATRS was selling it as a "designed from the ground up" rifle, not just a knockoff of an AR10. It did have some.... opposition... to say though, which is why it took quite a long time for it to get through the system.

DPMS is selling the Recon as it's new AR10 rifle, which is lighter and more comparable (and compatible with accessories) to an AR15... Slam dunk to me. As much as I hate to say it :(

Dang. While it's not really what I wanted to hear, what you say makes sense. Thanks for the clarification and explanation, I guess I'll have to save up an extra two grand for the MH!

Didn't know the G2 had a commercial buffer tube.

WTF were they thinking on that one? Thats a strike, even though its a great step forward in general.

Yah I was considering one of these then I read up on the commercial spec and I gave up.

According to DPMS tech guys, they use standard AR15 buffer tubes, so if you want a Mil Spec, change it out and go with a Mil Spec one :)

Although in this day and age, there isn't really much of a difference (With the availability of all stocks in both sizes), you're not going to break a Comm. tube because it's 6061-T6 vs. 7075-T6.

I've been wanting one of these rifles something fierce since they were announced, a couple of the local shops have em in, and they are a super nice rifle! Would love to put a Geissele MK-8 handguard on one, I wonder what the chances are Geissele will make a conversion barrel nut for it? (or if there's room to do it)

I may get a Recon because i like AR-10 but it would be very surprising that it would be more accurate than my AR-10T or my FNAR, would it shoot .5 to MOA, ( even less than .3 MOA occasionally) if it does, i am all ready there with my rifles... But still, id'e get one... JP.

It's the perfect rifle for a Texas Hog hunting vacation.
