25-06 A dead Calibur ?

.270 does everything a .25-06 will, better. Recoils about the same to most shoulders- I'd have to really think about it to tell the difference. Not much of a surprise given they're almost the same cartridge, just that the .270 produces a couple hundred FPS more at the same bullet weight, on the same powder charge due to being about just under 1/6th more efficient at using the pressure (larger bullet base). Also opens the door to heavier bullets up to 160gr.

what's the usual 25-06 barrel life?

Truthfully I don't know, a recently purchased 25-06 had a worn out barrel and it was built in the 1980s but I have no idea of the round count.
The tired barrel would keyhole any bullet weight at 25 yds.
A new barrel installed by friend and gun builder Gary Flach turned it into a tackdriver again..

25-06 dead?

Well just came from a buyers show and Savage, Mossberg, Weatherby, Howa, Remington, Winchester and Browning all have "new for 2016" rifle models chambered in 25.06 Rem.

I guess they never got the message from "that gun smith", because we all know that the mfg's have "no idea" of what calibers sell - they are so behind the times :)

As far as barrel life - I have notes from one source (long forgotten who) that suggests 1700-2250 rounds compared to other "parent cartridge" offerings: 270 Win = 2200-2900 and 30.06 = 5000-6000 rounds. So low in comparison but for a hunter who maybe pop's off 10 rounds a year with their rifle it would last for many generations.

I'm thinking the 25-06 is not dead either.

I bought my first 25-06 one & a half years ago a T/C Prohunter had the 28" barrel shortened to 24" and my second 25-06 a Rem 700 XCR 11 earlier this year.

My plan is to hunt blacktail deer & coyotes with them.

my oldest son and my youngest son each have a 25-06. In fact my youngest is carrying his this year for hunting. My oldest carried his about 4 years ago and dropped a nice buck straight down at 296 yards. It's a very fine cartridge!

That Smith is obviously trying to sell you something he has lots of then....25-06 is a great cartridge and no where near dead. As my preferred deer and antelope gun I can tell you I will never sell mine.

Now, one thing you have to keep in mind, though, is that the 25-06 is totally insufficient for bear defense. You need at least a 458 Lott. Just thought I'd set the record straight before some poor sap gets mangled on account of silly recommendations on CGN.

I use mine for field rats and starlings. Crows and groundhogs. Fox and coyote. Wolf and deer and even black bear. Personally I think it's light for moose although I know it will work just fine.
I shoot 75 gr Vmax at 3550 fps and Hornady interlocks 117 gr at 3100 fps from a 22" barrel. 100 yards they were interchangeable loads. I'm close to 1800 rounds and my groups are opening up from 3/4" at 100 yards to 1.5". Most of my loads have been 49.2 grs varget under the 75 gr Vmax.
I love the cartridge and the caliber. If anything I believe it's gaining in popularity. And im sorry but a few old guys should switch to it as it's great for deer. Nearly perfect and easier or older shoulders. It kills above its weight class and I sold my 270 as anything to big for my 25/06 gets the 458 treatment

Just thot of something I heard, & I apologize if I'm wrong.........You can get a Savage Axis rifle, and apparently the barrels change out for different calibers quite easily if you have the tool to do it with????? I'm sure there is someone out there ( not the gunsmith we're talking about ) with better info than this??

Should also add............I would Never do this without first learning from an Expert, how to do it properly...............

Perhaps you could provide an example of how it "pales" in comparison to any of those calibres. I would say it doesn't give up much to any of them.

sure

The 130gr Accubond isn't even a terribly aerodynamic bullet in 6.5mm, so the difference is even larger with a ABLR, VLD, Classic Hunter, ELD-X.....no such bullets really exist in the 25 cal bore
