What milsurp would you hunt with?

Pretty simple. You claim less than adequate experience with milsurps.... And claim to know what is "suitable for hunting".....

Hmm, no I don't think I made that claim. I may have only hunted with the SMLE's but that doesn't mean I've never owned or shot others.

Milsurps I remember shooting:

SMLE's
Mauser's
Garands
SKS
Moison Nagant
M14
Springfields
P-14

All of them have been used for hunting and will kill animals. Some are heavier or longer compared to modern hunting rifles, but that doesn't make them unsuitable.

Fair enough .... Now answer me this..... How many iron sighted rifles do you hunt with on a reg basis?

My Wagner and my 1885. I'd say that I hunt about 50/50 but I only hunted one day this year and it was with a scoped muzzle loader. Last couple of animals I shot were Bison (iron sighted Wagner) and Muskox (scoped 30-06).

I meant hunting experience...... That's why we are in he hunting and sporting forum, no?

I'd have no qualms about digging out my old LE 303 for hunting anything in Ontario. I'd even take my Mosin sniper moose & deer hunting as long as i didn't have to carry it all day, and my SKS for deer as well.

Personally I would be comfortable with hunting with a large variety of milsurps. That being said, I would take time to develop loads specifically for it, and ensure I am able to hit what I am aiming at (which realistically everyone should do with any rifle, be it dedicated hunting rifles or what have you).

For the weight argument, I personally don't care too much about the weight. Lighter is nicer, however I have carried much heavier firearms around in the bush for extended periods of time.
What he said! I've been hunting for around 40 yrs. and shooting for about 50 (ish). I've had the chance to handle and shoot a lot of different firearms and I've bagged my game almost without exception with one shot. I don't take "iffy" shots and as Eaglelord mentioned, I work up loads for everything I hunt with. I shoot recreationally to keep my skills sharp and my eye up. Age takes its toll and I have glass now on everything I hunt with. On a plus side, good glass gathers light well and early and/or late shots are comfortably doable when I couldn't say the same for iron sights. Bear in mind, I'm speaking personally here. I nailed my first deer with a No.4 LE (140 yds., open sights, one shot kill) and it's still one of my favourite rifles. Very slick and fast bolt, simple, rugged, reliable, and proven. A point was made earlier about rusty or poorly maintained milsurps. Why target milsurps? Any firearm, improperly cleaned and/or maintained can fail to perform. How many people aren't aware that it's good practice to take any new firearm, commercial or military, strip it down, degrease it, and relube with a proper firearm lubricant prior to use?

I recently bought a Howa 30-06. I've only shot it 3 times, and I've never taken it hunting. By your method of reasoning, I would be unable to determine it's suitability for hunting because I have no actual hunting experience with it.

What was the thread again ?

What milsurp would you hunt with ? !!!!!!!!

Based on the question, the only answers in the thread should be from the one that would hunt or are hunting with milsurp, no ?

You must be a riot at parties.

He expressed his opinion. You said your piece. Let it go.

I hunt with all my milsurps. Some I have to custom load because I can't buy soft points for some calibers or they are really difficult to get.

Shooting a 1 moa benched group has about as much to do with hunting with an iron sighted rifle in the brush as running a marathon does with sprinting.

I hunted with t3, 870 slug gun and sportered mosin this year. Personally I didn't have enough faith in the 7.62x39 round for deer shooting so I sold my m85, I think comparisons to the 30/30 make the 30/30 sound bad.

Irons sights on some milsurps are real chitty in thick brush, with their massive blade and whatnot. Easy to upgrade and tweak I guess.

I know grelmar is stirring the pot here, but I liked his comment about the lee enfields, marketing hype and maple syrup.

shooting a 1 MOA bench group means you know what your rifle is capable of under somewhat controlled conditions. I would say you are a numbskull if you dont properly sight in your hunting gun

If you can shoot under 2 inch groups at 75-100 yards, and it's comfortable for you to carry, why not?

As an aside, I prefer iron sights in thick bush. The best sights I have are on a T3 Battue, but my SKS works just fine.

I would most certainly use one of my SKS's and quality commercial ammo on a deer hunt where ranges are under 125 yards.

On a small game hunt, I wouldn't hesitate to take my Martini 310 Australian Cadet (32-20). It is accurate, light, and easy to shoot.

most new guns aren't stored in a moldy footlocker in the Ukraine... also the trigger group design and materials make some more susceptible to rusting IMHO.. such as the SKS

Shooting a 1 moa group at 100 is properly sighting in a hunting gun? No one has ever properly sighted in an iron sighted 30/30 I guess.

Never said anything about sighting in guns either way.

I might take this one out this fall.
