What milsurp would you hunt with?

I might take this one out this fall.

one of the nicest sporters I have seen. :) I have a parker hale No 4 with a Long Branch receiver I quite like

It's a lee-speed, not an enfield sporter. Not that it has any bearing on your intellect or anything...

You seem like a pleasant guy bobby!

boy you are super wise.. DID I SAY IT WAS A LEE SPORTER

I said it was a nice sporter...PERIOD

Then I said I have a LE sporter I like

read English much?

here is a little more to chew on:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Speed

"The weapon was a sporting variant of the well known Lee–Metford and Lee–Enfield rifles made for civilian shooters, though often purchased by Army officers who wanted a rifle made to a higher standard of fit and finish than the issued military rifle..."

pay extra attention to the words in bold...

nighty night :) time to catch up on the new X-Files..

I fellow I started hunting with had two Milsurps. His antelope and flat ground gun was a Swedish Mauser rechambered to 6.5x284 Ackley Improved. That used every bit of powder in the case. The other was a 8-06 Ackley Improved. Same idea. An arsenal steel receiver and barrel with a lengthen and widened chamber.

The comment back a few pages about stoning the engagement surfaces reminded me about an ND with a milsurp rifle. I happened to be walking at or near the front of a group of hunters moving single file. Someone discharged behind me so I spun around. He had bumped or jostled the rifle, and it fired on a loaded chamber. Fortunately, proper muzzle discipline had been kept, but it was scary for a few seconds.

when I was a kid my buddy's dad had a sporterized Spanish Mauser in .308 cut down and crowned at what I think was around 18" ( I was a kid so I never measured it). It seemed like it was slicked up, maybe by the smith who cut it down. It didn't shoot really tight groups, but good enough for him to hunt lots of deer and a moose or two. It felt very comfortable to handle and point.

I would not pack this one in the thick bush, but I have killed many groundhogs with such an M1 Garand.... 125 gr PSP Remmy bulk booolits and 43 grains of W748 in a .308 case:

Just the ticket for sitting in the stand!

Cheers,
Barney

Admittedly, while I'm not a fan of using a semi-auto for big game, I do like that. A milsurp like this is what I started out with

I still have a 'similar' model in the gun safe, and if push come to shove, I wouldn't hesitate to give it;) 'the call'.

I recently bought a Howa 30-06. I've only shot it 3 times, and I've never taken it hunting. By your method of reasoning, I would be unable to determine it's suitability for hunting because I have no actual hunting experience with it.

Well..... Sticking to my basic logic .... If you have never used or fired a basic bolt action designed for a hunting rifle in a time honoured hunting caliber, and don't know how to properly clean and maintain one I would say yes, you have much to learn.....

But we both know that isn't the case don't we?......

I really have no idea what your angle is or what your point is or what you are going on about...........

Why don't you explain in detail what your point is.

I've lugged around both a Lee Enfield and a Ross Mk10 while hunting for deer. I've killed most of my deer with a Swedish Mauser. A very long term project gun has been a Martini switched over to 219 Zipper that I would like to look like the target/varmint rigs of the 1940's and 50's.

Never taken my SKS hunting, but then I've never bothered to buy hunting ammo for it to see how it shoots, either.

No matte how you look at it, it's just a matte of which gun you have in your hands when the critter of your desire walks out in front of you. Kinda like arguing about which is a better truck: Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. It's all a matter of semantics.
