7mm 08 A few Questions

I haven't had the opportunity to try mine out on a moose yet. I have only been able to shoot whitetail so far. I have been using 139gr SST going a low MV of 2650fps.

The gun was originally a .243 but I rebarreled it to 7mm-08. There has been a noticeable increase in performance with the 7mm. On a WT the 7mm smacks the crap out them. I am betting that a bonded bullet (interbond) with a increased MV (a change in powder has yielded an easy 2800 fps and not much for recoil change) would be potent medicine for a big animal.

Thanks to all of you for the information so far ! Very good information I might add , I'm learning a lot here !

I bought a new Winchester in the 1970's in 30.06 for some reason it was a lemon, lot's of problems . Sort of shy about going that make again . "Once bitten twice shy" !

I bought a Ruger Hawkeye compact in 7-08 when they came out. I haven't used anything else for hunting since then and I have lots to choose from. It's the best combination out there a short light rifle with a power full low recoil cartridge.

Glad it worked out for ya.

You helped me out with my 7-08 a few years back. I took your advice with sierra 150 gr game king bt bullets with H4350 powder. That combination was the most accurate in my rifle. Thanks again Kelly.

Now just have to convince the rest that 100-200ft/sec difference don't mean squat when you are on target. :)

All the "cool kids" shoot 7.08's :)

What is your budget like for the rifle only?

That will help some of us toss ideas at you. After all, since it sounds like you have decided on the caliber now you are really just shopping for "fit" and what makes you say "I want that".

If you light your camp fire with 100 dollar bills and want a super light rifle to hump through the Rockies, Kimber makes some sweet, very light rifles.

If you are poor like most of us but CAN drop 1K on the rifle only there is some fine guns out there.

If you have less but want quality then a good used hunting rifle rarely see's a great deal of use (I have a 1957 Remington that probably hasn't seen 150 rounds in it's lifetime - it's a "hunting rifle" not a range/target gun).

If you really want to surprise yourself go compare some 140gr bullets in 7-08 to 150gr loads in 30-06 for down range ballistics, no practical world use but it sure will open your eyes.

Now within normal hunting distances it don't make a lick of difference as Guntech has in his post, that little picture says a lot.

How much difference in recoil if you load a 150 grain bullet to 2800 fps in the .30-06? I get one to two pounds difference, not half, on the calculator sites.

You can load up the 110 and 120 TTSX to respectable velocity....

I know that's what I'm going to reload with first in my yet to be used 7-08. According to the Barnes technical rep, he told me the TSX in the 120 gr. opens up at 1800 FPS and the TTSX opens up at 2000 when reloading 7mm .284 projectiles for a 7-08. I'm from BC so I doubt if I'll ever be using that gun where I need to take a shot over 300 yards,,,,,75-150 will be the norm so I don't think expansion will ever be an issue.

I will stick with my 300 rum and 200 gr LRX..Thanks SuperCub..lol
What surprised me was the 280..thats another good option to add to the mix..long action though.

They are not the same m70 as they were back then. Not even owned by the same people.

With 139's you should be up in the high 2800. I'm getting 2895 with 139gr hornday sst, interlock and h4350. Not pushing them overly hard either.

How long is your barrel? With a 22", 44 grains of Varget (which is a stiff load in the books, but no pressure signs in my rifle) and a 140 Berger hunting VLD I'm getting high 2700s (have to check my notes for exact average.)
