Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

Not any more!
I'm looking forward to mounting a scope and seeing what she can do.

Also I'm just past halfway through reading this epic thread. It's like a novel and I am interested to see how the story unfolds. I guess I'm part of it now.

Brand New NS 522

About a month ago I was shocked to find a NS 522 BNIB!! Having looked halfheartedly on occasion with no expectation of finding one for sale, I was giddy with excitement to find this one! I mounted an extra Leupold VX2 I had, but I still have not taken it to the range yet. In fact, its bore is still full of oil from storage. Father suggested I post photos.

I have no issues with the wood stock except for the mismatched job on the recoil pad as you can see here.

Eventually I'll test some ammo before going to work on it with the excellent guidance Father posted on here.

Just added a WJ 15 to the fold last Sunday from Bull Eye in London while it was still on sale , sale is over now .
They say the shoot pretty well , free floated the barrel , polished the bolt and receiver , cleaned up the trigger . tuned the mag .
Now I can do a shoot off between the two once the scope and mounts arrive and get installed .

Picked up that JW 20 from Canada ammo when they had that clearance sale ,
Hmmmmmm I think I am staring to collect to many 22's again

Too many? No such thing!

I had a JW15 a few years back. It was one of the reasons I wanted the NS522. Cool little rifle, nice and accurate, but ROUGH!

Yes the bolt was very tight and a little rough but far better than I had expected given what many people had posted . Perhaps 2014 was a good year or I just got lucky ?
I would have preferred a wood stock , soft as they maybe , I still like wood lol.

The JW's are a Tinkers delight due to low cost and endless possibilities lol.

Hmmmmmmm I thing your on to something Father , never to many 22's , I guess that's why I just received my shipping notice from C. A. my JW 25a is on it's way now .

Happy Easter everyone !!

I picked up my NS522 about a year and a half ago, maybe more, and I to had to change the stock. Luckily for me a buddy of mine had some really nice milled maple that cost me a McDonald's lunch. He also let me use his wood-shop for the initial rough cutting and then I did the rest of the finishing work in my tiny apartment. This is the only stock I've ever made and really had never done anything quite like it. I think it turned out pretty well, now all that's left is some trigger work and making the mags feed a bit better. The finish was about 15-20 very light coats of truoil, my preferred stock finish.

This is the wood blank with a few larger holes drilled for the grip etc.

Three hours latter it was roughed out.

In-letting for the trigger guard, I pillar and glass bedded both the action and the trigger guard.

All the contouring is done and waiting for the finish. I find that hanging is the easiest way to apply an even coat.

Cocksure, What is on your table behind the stock in the 4th photo? I see a lot of aluminum and a pistol grip? On topic, that stock looks great. You've got a pretty decent friend by the sounds of it

The pistol grip is attached to a 450psi hand pumped water gun I built as a project for school. All aluminum except for the 900lb motorcycle spring that acts on the cylinder.

My new stock for the Norinco NS522 made in Canada. It does have a few minor issues that had to be corrected by me but all in all it is a not bad looking stock. Quite a bit better than what it came with.

Maybe I will keep my 522 after all...

Now you have to give us more infos on that stock !

Without giving much praise to the guy that cut it...it was made by MCRS Tactical. It was made on a CNC machine. I actually had high hopes and expectations. It was supposed to be made of solid walnut. The finished product looks pretty nice, especially from a distance. It's when you get close up that the finer details need work. I did the final sanding with 220 grit, then 320, then 400. I made around 3 coats of Birchwood Casey walnut stain and around 5 coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil using 0000 steel wool between coats (24 hours to dry between coats).

Firstly the inletting for the trigger guard piece was done to the wrong dimensions. It was about 1/8" too big. He used the dimensions of the original stock which of course was not designed for the NS522 and didn't fit correctly from the start. That was why I sent him my entire rifle to correct that issue. He seemed to have for gotten that as it was simpler to use the old stock for the dimensions.

Next instead of milling a solid blank of walnut, he laminated a few thinner pieces together (not to my knowledge). After the CNC machining it left two ugly lines where the glue showed through from the lamination. He said that staining it would cover that up. It did not. He claimed he laminated it for strength but I am very sure it was because the wood was cheaper.

Next he had agreed to install aluminum pillars as he said it would be necessary to maintain it's accuracy. When I got it back that was not done. I told him I would send it back for him to finish (and hopefully fill the gap). He said it was not necessary as he was going to mail me the parts. Having never done this before I was uncomfortable. He would not allow me to send it back. I gave him opportunity after opportunity to make me happy. He wanted nothing more to do with it. He had his money and was no longer interested in spending time on it. Who does that? Forget to install something and instead of correcting it just send the customer the parts and tell him to do it himself? The worst customer service ever.

The hardest thing to fix was the oversized hole he made for the trigger guard piece. I ended up using clear tape on the stock (to prevent sticking) and filled in the extra space with JB Weld. It made the guard a little longer but it bonded nicely and at least it now fits the space. I sanded it up and painted the whole piece. It turned out looking pretty good. I am anxiously awaiting the pillars so I can be rid of this guy.

As far as cost goes. I spent $340 cash and $20 for shipping. I thought the price was reasonable if I got what I expected. In the end it looks 10X better than what was there. I do not recommend that anyone uses MCRS Tactical for anything. He will make you all kinds of promises over the phone but you will likely not get what you wanted. Nor will you get it anywhere close to when you were promised. If you think he will take it back and make you a satisfied customer...think again. I like the overall look of the stock but that also had a great deal to do with what I did to it. I have emails to prove if there is any doubts. I hope your project goes more smoothly than mine.

Fair warning. That's a shame, had he done everything he promised you he would have had a great business opportunity from this thread alone. I was set to buy one of those stocks as soon as I found out who made them. The search continues.
