Laid down: 22 Aug, 1938
Launched: 6 Jul, 1939
Commissioned: 28 Oct, 1939
Sold 6 June 1950.

Interestingly, that's about all I can find on her. The fellow who wrote The Cruel Sea served aboard her for a time, but that's about it. One of the multitude of naval vessels that did her time, played her small role, and was scrapped five years after the war.

Aug. 6, 2016 ... Contractors secure the 6-inch, 30 caliber gun from the U.S. Navy battleship Maine onto a truck bed at the Washington Navy Yard. The Maine attained infamy when it was sunk in Havana Harbor, Cuba, being the catalyst of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Naval History and Heritage Command contracted WLCC to perform extensive conservation work on the gun to preserve it for future generations.

Aug. 6, 2016 ... After weathering the elements for more than 20 years, contractors clear away loose dirt around the base of the 6-inch, 30 caliber gun from the U.S. Navy battleship Maine at the Washington Navy Yard. The Maine attained infamy when it was sunk in Havana Harbor, Cuba, being the catalyst of the Spanish-American War in 1898. A pattern of interfering foreign policy carried out in the name of democracy. Might be a good way to manipulate the acquisition and use of resources for a maturing nation. I wonder if they actually planned that.

Since there are a bunch of new M39's on the market, here is a Finnish soldier during the continuation war using a Sako M39SOV.

And another M39SOV with a different type of mount:

The Jolly Roger was not solely used by the Germans and that is not a totenkopf on his hat. One of the Finnish infantry regiments used that insignia in the 1940's. As did allied submarine forces.

Nothing to do with SS, They have the crossed bones behind the skull.

Could even be a Masson unit. :)
