As usual the whole thing is blown way out of proportion, he did something completely legal. The fact that he took the time to practice his spear throwing, practice his hunting skills and get good enough to make that throw resulting in a dead bear is amazing. Maybe he shouldn't have made such a fuss over it, but he put a lot of time, effort and money into that hunt and he managed to pull it off, I'd be excited too!!! I am excited and happy every time I harvest game. I think that what's ethical is dependent on each person, I've seen people for whom a 25 yard shot with a scoped rifle is too far, and people who can make a 80 yard bow shot. We cannot and should not attempt to police others methods of hunting so long as they are legal and not outrightly cruel. We should however use discretion on social media and especially FB and YouTube. Perhaps posting on Full30.com would've been a wiser choice, but hindsight is 20/20. In reality, people will always find a way to be offended about something they know nothing about.

Rhetorical question..........confining animals in abnormally high density groups, stuffing them with foods not natural to their species, then transporting them once they have been fattened up beyond a healthy level to the slaughter house; all so the bleeding hearts can conveniently pick up their meat at the grocery store? This is 'humane"? As opposed to hunting, natural game living in the wild as they were meant to? WTF! We need a massive infusion of chlorine in the gene pool, the 'germs' are breeding out of control.

I think the NDP government is reacting to the public outcry demanding action. After things die down, they may not do anything. I think outlawing bear baiting and spear hunting in one fell swoop is a good idea.
IMO, bear baiting isn't hunting. It's essentially trapping. Hunting is when you seek out and stalk the animal, outsmart it and kill it. Sitting there with a case of beer and a bucket full of cow guts is for bums who are too lazy to do the real thing.

There is way too many Black Bears these days so we need to reduce their population for their good and ours, regardless of what COMPLETELY LEGAL AND ETHICAL method used to harvest them. Even if you had a point about baiting being trapping, that's exactly what we need to do to reduce the population!
Maybe, maybe not. But when a government is ideology opposed to something and/or they think they can milk it for votes, laws can get changed in a hurry.
Be careful about advocating bans. They can and often become a stepping stone for the next ban. Has bear spearing been a problem in Alberta? Or anywhere else for the matter? As for bear baiting, I have never used that method for hunting bears because I've never needed to. That doesn't mean baiting doesn't have a place, especially in dense woods. Out here on the west coast, we have BB's all over the place. A few less wouldn't be noticed in the grand scheme of things.

While we're forming pro and anti tribes we should jump in their black rifle and pistol forums to rally against civilian ownership of guns we don't see a purpose for. Or... We all just stay the heck out of things we don't understand.
I ####ing hate bear baiting especially near walking trails close to town or near roads. Its pretty ignorant to set up stuff where people go for walks and by roads with low visibility in the first place. Get out of your truck and walk abit at least. First time someone is hurt because of this is when everyone is effected, and lets face it its going to happen just a matter of time.
On the bright side at least you have something set up for when your forget targets at home or just because.

Funny use of a spear is now verboten but the use of a club on a baby seal is in shrined in federal law.
Maybe we could ban people that don't hunt or have any experience with firearms/ hunting being given the authority to pass laws [push their own agenda] on those of us that actually know what's going on? At what point of the bear's death did the spear fail? Harold
