My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Just got my 452 out to sight in my vortex scope, only front sandbag as i was expecting to do only function test
Only shot 50 rounds, this was one of the bests, but they all ressembled this.
This is 25M as is the max at my indoor range.
As soon as the weather gets warmer i believe and am hoping i have an 1/2"@50M capable rig

Perhaps shooters who insist that shooter technique plays a negligible role in shooting results (if there are any such riflemen) might find solace and confirmation in such a test. If a sporter barrel threw the POI willy nilly, as it were, over the POA that would be comforting and reassuring indeed.;) On the other hand, if the results revealed that a sporter barrel configuration can give good results then that would be one less argument in favour of equipment alone determining shooting consistency.

I did see someone reference strapping down rifles into lead sleds and I would have to agree at that point shooter technique is nullified and it's all about the rifle/ammo for challenge success. Otherwise yes you need good, consistent technique, calm conditions, quality ammo and a well made issue free rifle. Sporter rifles can and do give good results, there are numerous ones on the successful list. My hypothesis is that such rifles display significant dispersion patterns when the ammo used is not "in tune" with the barrel. It is anecdotally known that light contour barrels will be much "pickier" about the loads that shoot well in them in contrast to heavy contours which tend to produce good results with a wider variety of loads. Let's not even get started on the dreaded "dud" barrels which cannot be made to perform well no matter the tuning done or ammo used... And there is no solace in knowing one is held back by the physical limits of their equipment. On the contrary, it can be rather upsetting and annoying for the only way to improve in such a scenario is to repair or replace the deficient equipment. One hopes the solution is merely as simple as changing ammunition brands or lot #'s.

Good shootin' CK, see I knew all you needed was a good rifle ;) Just get a pic with calipers on your smallest group, calculate the average and you'll have all the challenge requirements complete.

yah, don't meet competition base line. The groups are bang on. All 5 shot groups, set micrometer zero at -.220 then measured.

It was cold and I only had 50 rounds of ammo. (Went out to zero in a different rifle) As soon as it warms up, I will go and get a "proper" target.

the rifle I went to sight in was a 223 and it shot a group of .430 certainly good enough for yotes. lol

It looks like you set your calipers to .220 then measured from center to center?

far edge, to far edge. Will take pics of caliper next time to simmer yall down. The "circle" targets are not 1 inch. They come in around .958 because the proportions got screwy on my PC. That may be throwing you guys off a bit.

Hmmm sorry to say CK looking at my own targets your sizes seem to be off by a minimum of 0.1". To clarify, measurement should be taken from the edge of the dark smudge on the paper, not just the punched hole which is a little smaller.

Didn't he zero@.220" and measure CTC so no smudge involved?

Alrighty, time to get this thread back on the rails! It was a crisp -2C with calm, 3-5 mph winds today. I was heating up a gel pack in the microwave to put in the cooler and keep my ammo warm, pouring my coffee and I hear this *POP* Oh crap! It exploded in the microwave after only 30 seconds! ARRRGHHHH luckily I read about Chilly using hot water bottles so I filled one up and used it instead (great idea). I recently re-barreled my Weatherby XXII with an Anschütz 1416 D HB barrel since I had determined after much testing the original barrel was just never going to beat this challenge. This target is a bit of a squeaker, but I am posting it anyway since I'm happy to finally get this rifle shooting proper. I haven't done any ammo testing or tuning yet so there's definitely room for improvement and hey, this was literally my first attempt at the challenge with the new barrel and I already nailed it :)
