My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Incredible shooting. And with a 4X!

Lol, I was honestly hesitant to post it because I though who the f*** is going to believe I did that with a 4x scope. I hardly believe it happened. It's absolutely out of the norm for that setup, but hey man, I'll take it. Because it'll probably never happen again haha.

I went to the range today armed with an inch/pound torque driver and a box of Eley tenex in an attempt to dial in my rifle for the next fun shoot at our club. I don't normally buy ammo that's more than $10/50, but I guess that's what it takes eh? I have found it to be the most accurate ammo I've tried in my gun before and wanted to take the ammo out of the equation as much as possible while dialing in my action torque so I splurged. (Thanks for the tip yodave)

The biggest setback for my rifle IMHO is the scope. It's only 4x, and it's 60 some odd years old. That said its one of the clearest scopes with the finest crosshairs I've ever seen. They really don't make them like this anymore. But as a result my gun usually groups about 3/4" at 50m, my usual ammo of choice being RWS target rifle.

Now for the dancing banana!

:dancingbanana:

I absolutely F'n crushed it! Lol I wasn't even purposefully attempting the challenge as I had given up hope a while ago. But after the first two groups I knew I could have a chance here. I feel the combination of the right ammo, the right torque on the action screws (15 inch pounds), the right windless conditions, and the right target (I could line the crosshairs up with the dots quite easily) combined with a huge stroke of luck made this happen. Although I've always known the gun was capable.
Group sizes;
.146
.186
.377
.427
.429
Average group size .313.

Rifle is a Mossberg 146-b which I loaded single shot, trigger set to 13oz. It's so dark in the rifle shed I had to take it out to the baffles to get a good pic of it. It just wasn't showing in pictures, but it was shot from a bench with front and rear sandbags.

Please excuse my filthy verneer from work. It's old. It's seen some action.
Amazing shooting Mikeystew. I added you to the successful list.

Congratulations!
I tried with diopter sights at 50 meters and acquired several 5-shot groups under 0.5" and found that with the right target, diopter sights could shoot incredible groups also. So I believe that you don't need a high power scope to shoot good groups, all you need is consistent sight pictures.

I believe it. I've seen you shoot lots. But, you do realize, don't you, that you've taken the fun out of the next 22 rifle fun shoot for a whole lot of people. LOL

I tried to get my 146ba but it was a no go.The best I achieved was a few .3s with SK rifle match .Glad to see you pull it off using tenex. I too know it can be done with 4x as I've shot guite a few 5 shot groups under a half inch with diopters, although hard on my eyes.
Congrats.

I like it well done. Your old soldier caliper is a hoot but still accurate "LOL" where does he live in,your tool box?
R
I'm guessing right under his 2-pound ball-peen hammer. And, from the looks of that caliper, he's picked up and used the wrong one of the two at least once or twice.

Congratulations!

Seriously that target (clearly) is the best one I've used for groups with the scope I have. The 1/2" dots look like mildots on the reticle when it's all lined up properly. But yeah diopter sights can totally do it. I used to have a BSA international ISU that could have done it with the diopter sights I bet, and a couple other small frame martinis that would have as well in the right hands with the right ammo.

No worries there Ken, I don't think I'll be buying any more tenex anytime soon. The sticker shock was a bit too much for me and frankly I'm quite happy with it being a 3/4" gun at 50. It shoots the RWS good enough for me for $15 less a box. Besides, none of the stations use front and rear sandbags... (Sad face)
And my plan is to take the scope off for the next fun shoot and use the aperture sights. A little birdy told me you need some competition in the open sights category Haha.

That is some very impressive shooting mikeystew. I am in awe of your group sizes, especially considering the low power scope.
By contrast I am almost embarrassed to post my challenge results using the same ammo and a much more powerful scope. However, I have been trying to complete this challenge with my 10/22 for a very long time and was finally successful today (subject to Underthegun's approval).

Rifle: 10/22
Ammo: Eley Tenex
Groups: .278, .444, .353, .457, .285, (average: .363)

Thanks to Elimsprint for the help today and to Underthegun for this inspiring thread!

That's fantastic shooting for any semi auto IMHO. Very nice! Can you share some details about the rifle? You say 10/22 but it looks to be mostly aftermarket to my eyes, but I'm no 10/22 expert either.

Thanks mikeystew.
This rifle has been constantly evolving over the past few years. Every part of it was purchased used on the EE except for the barrel that was purchased 2nd hand but unfired. Here are its current specs:
Dlask receiver, Kidd bolt, Kidd 2 stage trigger, Kidd charging handle/spring, Kidd 20" stainless steel match barrel, Boyds stock, Sightron SIII 8-32x50 scope, Burris ? rings.

Those are some awesome groups. Nice shooting. There's nothing to embarrassed there at all. I've been trying off and on as well but just can't seem to get 5 groups in a row. Got 3 in row yesterday and 4 out of 5 a couple times this morning. Oh well it's fun trying (frustrating too lol). Again great shooting.

Thanks colonel; I have lost count of the number of times I almost qualified with this rifle (in different configurations and with different ammo) getting multiple targets with 3/5 and 4/5 1/2" or less groups. It can be frustrating at times!

Thanks Ryan; I was shooting in Elimsprints backyard today. We had a few snow flurries early on and some gusty winds. I think I will head to Oceola next weekend - my PAR .308 needs to get some 100-300 yard target time (send me a pm if you are going too and we can try to meet up)
