VIDEO ADDED COMPLETED SKS BOLT ACTION by Canuck94

Took it to the range before going any further with the project and it was sks accurate but easy to group with the peep sight. 3 inches at the 100 a few inches high and a couple of inches to the left so I was able to adjust using the front post adjustments so it's all good so far. Today it's off to have the scope rail welded to the receiver and the mag band. I will post the raw work as soon as I get it back.

Forget the scope rail, this thing will never be accurate enough to use it to its' full potential. Instead, you should try to make a Mauser-style upper handguard out of matching color wood. The fully exposed barrel and upper receiver makes it look like you've lost some parts on your way to the range, lol!

Also, the mag plate should be made flush with the bottom of the stock to improve looks and ergonomics further (again, like a Mauser), since it can only legally hold 5 rounds anyway and the rifle has been Bubba'd beyond the point of no return. Someone once told me that there exists a factory (commercial) 5-round box mag for an SKS. Maybe get one of those, if you can source one... or chop/mig-weld the stock one.

Interesting project to look at overall, but I'd feel so bad doing this to a military issue SKS myself, regardless of its' condition. There was a time where a lot of guys thought chopping inexpensive and plentiful Enfields into "sporters" was a great and neat idea too... and we all know how that panned out in the end. Just saying.

;)

I'm still waiting to see some kind of real benefit to this major bubba job lol.
Definitely looks lighter the factory...

I agree for the time being that the gun looks off balance and that may be addressed later on as the project comes to a final stage. All of my other SKSs have a flush cut down magazine but this one will stay intact until the authorities finish determining the status of the mag capacity of this one. So far this requests is slowly making it's way through their technical department for evaluation. The difference in weight and balance is significant and only adds to it's handling capabilities.

If you welded a lug to the outside of the SKS magazine that would prevent it from fitting into an SKS, and then milled/ground a matching slot in the rifle action, you would have a magazine that was designed to fit only this bolt-action rifle. Disclaimer: I don't have an SKS and I'm not familiar enough with it to know if this would work, but it's feasible with most of the semi-autos I've seen.

I know, just because it's true in fact, doesn't mean it's true in law.

Dust cover peep is a no no.. will never hold zero well... otherwise... don't understand why to make a bolt but looks interesting at least the OP is not sitting on his ass but creates things so A+ for being a creator and changing world around him

There is absolutely no issue with installing a peep as I did on the receiver cover and it will definitely hold zero. With a little work, the cover will also hold zero with a scope mounted on it, it's just too far back for my liking so I have always made my own mounts and I attach them to the receiver instead.

Damn, lots of armchair critics in this thread. I enjoy seeing someone do something a bit different to an sks than the same old plastic fantastic cobble of parts bolted together, look forward to seeing the finished product.

Great post.

Chit buddy - naturally.... 6 replies to off the rails :). I like it too (re: not trying to stick a crapco / duckbill etc on to it). She's a bit of a monster OP, but I like your thinking and as I can't fabricate anything like it myself, I will not critique any aspect of your efforts. #### is it hot here today. Gotta be the hottest day of the summer thus far.

Thanks

As you can appreciate there are many ways to change the look and function of the SKS without having to spend money copying all the standard mods. Here's a couple of examples that can make a dramatic change to the look of the SKS.

Still looks better like this...

nope.. Would have to make a mag from scratch.
