Type 81 Owners Corner !

Mine showed up yesterday. I knew my assistant would be keen to try it out so I gave it to him last night and Tom Sawyered him into giving it an initial cleaning. He ran through about 40 rounds of Chinese non corrosive so I guess it's on it's way to being broken in. :)

Looks great!!
When did you place your order for the fixed stock???

So far my only problem with the rifle is the damn receiver cover! Getting it off- no problem. Putting it back on for some reason takes me like 10 minutes, lol.

Line it up with the take down button about 1/2 covered by the cover (so you can see top half of it) push it forward then down once it clears the lip at the rear of the receiver. If the button doesn't pop out just cycle the action while holding down on the dust cover. It usually just pops out. It gets easier and easier the more you do it.

Thanks for the tips

You obviously have been doing pretty well after so many years. LOL

The manual states that after reassembly the gas plug shall be rotated to position 1. Unfortunately the only online manual found seems to be missing the final page or "figures" but the figure supplied by dagobert seems fairly self explanatory. 0 for lanching grenades or manual mode. Does beg the question, has anyone shot groups in 0 manual mode aka more precision.

If anything like the T97, or just about any other adjustable gas rifle,

0 - OFF for rifle grenades
1 - Normal use
2 - Adverse conditions - feeds the rifle more gas to reliably cycle it in extreme conditions like freezing environments, or if the rifle is excessively fouled.

I don't see how turning off the gas would make the rifle more precise, the rifle doesn't cycle until the bullet is on it's way downrange. You would turn it off on the T97 if you wanted to keep your brass from getting dented on ejection, but that's the only reason. If the T81 doesn't dent your brass, and you're not dropping HE on dismounted motostrelki, there's not really a use for it.

Got mine.

1. Everything is tight.
2. Cycling is rough, but was expected.
3. AK mags don't fit. LOL.
4. Junky dust cover.
5. Free floating firing pin like in SKS. Need to keep that channel clean or get SKS spring, if it will fit.

6. Clean the gas block before use. In my experience all that oil will turn into hard carbon easy.
7. Putting dust cover back on is a #####. use included tool do depress the spring.
8. Wood is not treated on interior surfaces.
9. Like the trigger.

Sling swivel jammed during assembly under gas tube cover.

Slightly hand-fitted bolt (faulty casting, my guess)

Vz58 it is not, it is half that rifle. So if on the fence between 2, get Vz58. But otherwise nice addition to red rifles collection.

I sure hope the bolts are not cast on these... that would be bad.

I can be wrong about casting. It looks like there were two bumps on the bolt which were grinded away.

If it was milled, it must've been done on a manually controlled machinery, not computerized.

Shooting impressions far more favourable than initial out of the box impressions. I put 80 rounds of Czech surplus through mine today:

Functioned flawlessly throughout right out of the box. Firing pin strike is strong and central, ejection of empty case is vigorous to say the least, very high and somewhat forward and right. Case not mangled by the ejection.

Initially shot low and left but got it on target with some adjustments, groups approx 3 - 4 inches at 100 yards. Might be capable of better with improved sights, ergonomics etc

Recoil light and very fun to shoot. Long mag is a bit of a pain. Would be nice if some 20/5 or 10/5 mags were available ....... but then that would spoil the AK look.

Overall very pleased with how it shoots. Still not sure this is an $1100 rifle. To make me happier with the price the stock/pistol grip ergonomics would have to be better and controls such as safety, mag release and sights improved

Great shooting....thanks for the report.

It's all done old-school for the most part..jigs and tools, I think it was CanAm that said the AR's are CNC made though, not sure.
Yours it quite fine, nothing of concern there.
