Marihuana at Hunting Camp.

I have been hunting with the same group for pretty well 30 plus years now. About 10 years ago, we purchased a parcel of land in Northern Alberta, and built a hunting camp, which we attend 2-3 times a year.

One of my buddies son (30 years old) has been hunting with us for about 8 years now. We know that he socially self medicates marihuana through his own admission. Having said that, he has never brought any in camp since he started hunting with us. It was pointed out to him that such practice would not be tolerated at our camp as it is classified as an illegal substance. To our knowledge, he has respected that.

As we all know, the use of marihuana will be legal this summer. I suspect this will be a topic of conversation as we approach hunting season.

Most of our crew will enjoy the odd cocktails at camp after the hunt, or a nice cold one after bringing a moose or elk in Camp. As stated above, we have been doing this for many moons, and I am sure many here do the same thing. Main thing is being responsible about it.

This individual will no doubt ask us if it would be alright to bring some marihuana in camp, as it will now be legal. I have spoken to all my buddies about it and no one has issues with it. I suspect it will not be a problem, as long as it is "after hours" at camp, and taken in a respectful and responsible way (same as alcohol). Should he choose to bring some, it will be done outside the living areas.

On the other hand, one may say there is no way there will ever be pot in "my" camp. I suppose whoever has the camp/land control can make that decision. We have chosen the previously mentioned route. Having said that, I am also sure that marihuana has been used on many occasions in different camps in the past.

This matter is now around the corner. How will you approach it?

Let's not derail this one and let's have an open and honest discussion about it.
 
If the rifles are away for the day, and the fellow is responsible otherwise, I personally think it is a double standard to say "my narcotic is ok, but yours isn't."
I would personally have zero issues around it. Not much more to say on my part. I'm curious as to the ages of the guys you go with?
 
Not a fan of secondhand smoke (pot or worse tobacco). So as long as he's respectful towards the others it's really much ado about nothing!
 
I don't see an issue with it. You and your buddies camp and ye set the rules. If ye permit sociables, don't see a difference in someone having some smoke as long as the firearms are put away for the day.

Constellation Brands, the parent company behind Corona, Modelo, Svedka, and a bunch of other booze, announced Monday that it acquired a 9.9 percent minority stake in Canopy Growth, a Canadian medical marijuana company. It plans to work with Canopy to experiment with weed-infused drinks, reports The Wall Street Journal. Big alcohol has just dipped its first exploratory toe into the cannabis market.

Same rules as the booze so far as I'm concerned. Never had an issue with the Mary Jane myself, but then again I'm also on the younger end of the spectrum so maybe that plays a part in it.



Oh, and I grew up on the West Coast.
 
If he is "medicating" then possibly he has a prescription, therefore completely legal.
As with alcohol, timing and responsible use is paramount, unless he is using CBD in which case timing is not important as it does not affect cognitive function.
In my opinion it is pretty hypocritical to be boozing and then tell him he can't have his flavor, but if it's your camp and not his then do what you want.
Etiquette is similar to tobacco, smoke downwind so as to be courteous to the others around in regards to second hand smoke.
At the end of the day remember it's just weed and is far less dangerous or impairing compared to alcohol.
Really a non issue if you ask me.
And like you said, which is true for all substances, responsible use is what really matters.
 
As long as its the end of the day and all has been cleaned up and put away then I wouldnt see a problem.

You might need a rule tho...
They have to bring 1 Bag of chips for every hour of being high or there could be a sudden and drastic decline in snack levels...
