Re; buttstock checkering... by "self" I meant are you checkering the blank it"self", or adding a thin secondary block and checkering that? I never had any doubt that you would be doing it... would be unthinkable to hand-off this project.
 
Every time I come here I tell myself "I'm just here to look at the gorgeous stock, I don't need a single shot rifle, I'm just looking, just looking....." , and then immediately after I go to the EE and search for ruger no.1

Is this a normal response?
 
Initially I thought a 21" barrel provided the best look, but at second glance I believe, 23" is the right choice appearance wise, keeping with prime number barrel lengths and probably provides the best handling characteristics. Personally I'd choose a thin red rubber butt pad for two reasons; first the butt would be less slippery on the shoulder, and secondly, it would provide protection to the rifle's butt if bumped against a rock, in a thoughtless moment of exhaustion while in the midst of a goat hunt, even though it might not exude the class of a checkered butt.

Totally normal, might I suggest the .303 edition. :d


1/4” of red rubber is on my radar too Boomer, would make it properly English too. Leather is also a thought. Will checker for now I suspect and if it gets buggered, put the slim pad on. I like 22-23” too... 23” would benefit the 5.6x50 a bit too, has a bit more powder to burn than the .223.

All caught up, I’ll be sure to bring it out your next trip West. Wanna take a black bear in the spring? We’ll have to chat.
 
If one used the Golden Mean to arrive at a nicely proportioned forend length, then the existing length(7.25”) should be a perfect fit with the 19” barrel. But, really, it isn’t.

In my opinion, the 23” barrel/7.25” forend would be more pleasing to the eye than the other choices. Shortening the forend to the end of the quarter-rib would be detrimental to the overall look of the rifle.
 
On my longer barreled T/C Contender carbines I find the 21" factory tapered barrels balance/feel the best for me.
 
I was leaning towards the 23" length too, until I saw the pic of you shooting it. The long barrel actually looks pretty darn cool. Maybe chop it an inch at a time to see how you like the look and run it over a chronograph. ;)

Never heard of the cartridge before so I will do some googles

Yea would be neat to gather the data and see at which length I hit velocity remorse. These 50 grainers are cracking, loud snap on hitting the gongs and punch through 3/8” mild steel and leave a good crater on the second piece of 3/8. Makes me rather impressed with the AR600 gong steel plates, they ring like bells with a surprisingly high pitch when hit by the little speeders. I agree on the long tube having a distinct look, reminiscent of the old English rifles, and the long Sharps’ stateside, with way too much hanging out front. Sure I’ll be cutting it back but want to take an animal with it at 27”, and then hunt again wherever I settle be in 21-23” and see what I’ve lost of the handling in terminal ballistics, if anything.

Dak47, MiG25- thanks for the kind words, it’s stalled for now as I’m on days off. Kodiak dead right, will poke around the mountains and islands with it. Sure my son will take his first blacktail deer with it.
