Speak for yourself bud.It isnt like out west here, binoculars are useless, most shots are under 150 feet and if you arent set up you will get busted. Ive shot many under 50 feet.
Different sort of hunting.

The media is reporting neither were wearing hunter orange. Very strange indeed. I remember a Mountie told me he once picked up a hunter and give him a lift home. The mountie asked him did you get a shot at one. The hunter said, I only had one sound shot." What the hell is that. The cop asked no more questions.
Yes we have to wear an orange vest and hat so there is no excuse for this accident.
About 10 years ago i was sitting on a log at day break near a brook with choppings either side so a lot of trees were blown down all around me. A half hr after daylight i heard cracking coming up the creek so i got ready, saw some brown motion but waited till a clear shot.
Out walked a moron in full camo with a rifle from the mess of blowdowns, crosshairs were on his head, safety off.
I had some strong words for that idiot.
There's morons everywhere
You mean before you shoulder your rifle. Hunter culture and binoculars save lives; real binos not Canadian Tire or Walmart crap.
Side note we don’t use orange in BC, a proper hunting culture and identifying your target completely saves lives better than any colour can.
When the sound shot "hunter" hears a shot in the bush he fires at it hoping he lucks out and hits a deer.
Idiots who take sound shots usually carry semis and will empty the magazine at sounds in the bush.
Condolences to the family of the deceased but also to the poor guy who pulled the trigger. He will live with this horror and guilt for the rest of his life and is going to need some serious counseling. two families lives shattered by this one event. Tragic.
In similar accidents, I've always wondered what part of the animal was being aimed at. Chilling to think about this event.
My wife and co-workers that don't hunt often ask, aren't you afraid of the animals in the woods. My response is always, "No - I'm only afraid of other humans in the woods."
Kind of reminds me of seat belts when I read some posts here.
Belts like hunters orange are useless to some still today
Too bad many of these guys cannot speak to tell us why they think like that since they are dead or crippled
Cheers
This. I think the orange is stupid. Wearing bright colors by choice i dont think is stupid but not the alternative to proper gun safety. Certainly the overly detailed regs about it are stupid in every way.
Let the stats speak for themselves. Hunter orange used to be mandatory in Alberta, and since the requirement was dropped, the number of accidental shootings did jot increase. What does that indicate?
"Hunter" orange or rather a particular florescent orange was selected for the regulations due to its high visibility in the colour spectrum and the fact it is not observed in nature as a "natural" colour.
Is it stupid ?? Absolutely not.
It was an effort to reduce hunter related injuries and/or fatalities because the plain and simple truth is that there are morons out there.
I agree with you that practicing hunter safety is paramount however we all know that never will exist across the board.
PS: I don't know what that indicates Stubblejumper,, could be many things. Skewed stats ? the fact that hunter orange is no longer prevalent in the woods made people more cautious ? People stopped shooting at orange deer?
I don't know either.
Look at the over all stats
Big difference also hunting in Alberta and NS. Done both so know
Cheers
Are you suggesting that the hunters in NS. are more careless and are more likely to shoot at unidentified targets? And I have hunted n four provinces, two which have a color restriction, and two that don't, and I felt o safer in the provinces that do.
I am saying it is much more difficult to see your target since the brush is so think or easier have an accident since a bullet can go a long way beyond what you may see in your line of timber in front of you
May be a guy standing 40 yards away in that timber and no way can I see him. With orange on I have a better chance
Cheers
