This thread has actually got me wanting to do this to an AR. Forgive my newbie question, but is there any detrimental effects from a DIY paintjob? It won't interfere with the function of the rifle, if it's done correctly, I assume?

It's all about the prep work, but no, done right it shouldn't.

Other than loosing value on your guns, no there's none.
Just tape or remove the trigger and iron sights. Try to avoid paint to go inside the receiver.

I actually prefer to use those little foamie ear plugs. Cut them smal and shove me in the pin holes and they expand to fill it completely. Use the fat end and it fits a trigger shoe hole perfectly with ease. I find it’s a lot quicker and does a better job then tape does.

Re did my 16" last month. Wasn't a big fan of the greens, didn't match well with the scenery around here.

This one is Slick! Gets my vote. Has a real classic G.I. Joe vibe to it.
