BC Hunter who shot support dog fined and banned

Where does it say it’s legal to shoot a dog you see “roaming”? Pets get away, and people go looking for them, or they are off leash on Crown land with their masters nearby. It’s legal for a CO to do so if he believes it is harassing wildlife, but that doesn’t make it legal for hunters afield. If that belief was prevalent, a lot of people would be seeing the inside of a court room.

Well, the body count is piling up here. Neighbors have sheep and about a dozen dogs, supposedly coyote guard dogs, that run far and wide , causing havoc with other people's cattle. A court order hasn't helped, so there is only one solution and it's legal.

So if I'm reading you right you want to shoot the dogs?if this is the case then you are one wacked mf who is lucky if one of the neighbours doesn't do the same to you. After reading your post only one word comes to mind Goof.

Wow ! just wow, it makes my blood boil when I saw article like that.

I don't care who or what you are but if you come to my dogs even with any reasons or none at all then you will pay the price one way or my another way, be ready to face the consequence since I already prepared to face mine. A few years on holiday won't be a problem since I'm already old and grumpy.

They maybe pet or simply animals to yours eyes but they are my family.

Amen brother

I feel the same, always had dogs around. That does not mean they can roam and harass livestock. You want people to respect your family member, then return respect must be shown to their livestock which are also family. Most farmers/ranchers care for their animals beyond just their financial concerns. This was a different situation where it was a poacher out behaving very badly, figure he got off easy.

Yup, when people can’t keep their dogs contained and they are harassing other people’s livestock it’s not long before dogs get shot and rightfully so. Some people have no clue about being a responsible dog owner, especially in a rural setting.

I take it you don’t live in the country? If I catch a dog loose on my fully fenced in property and it’s chasing or harassing my goats or chickens it’s getting shot, period. If more people cared about the health and welfare of their dogs they wouldn’t let them run wild, I damn well made sure my two dogs can’t get off the property. The last thing I want is for them to get shot while they’re out roaming around, they’re my responsibility after all.

Pretty quick on the draw ehh sunshine...dont have a clue where you live or do i care.....the near by neighbours all have dogs and sometimes they are a pain but since i know all my neighbours a call is all that is needed. As for blowing away someones pet because your fk chickens are upset you rationalize that as an equal response?maybe just maybe using common sense and good judgement would pervail but this does not seem to be the case.Your property, your neighbours and your banjo, play it as you like.

I recommend you leave southern Ontario for a bit and see what it’s like in a rural town, when livestock is chased, or killed by someone not taking responsibility for their pets the reality of the situation is those pets generally don’t get a second chance at killing someone’s livestock aka livelihood. They get shot quick fast and it’s legal, just because you can’t picture your dogs doing this doesn’t mean they won’t.

I securely fenced my property for two reasons, one was to keep my livestock and dogs contained and the other was to keep other people’s roaming animals out. It keeps me from having to shoot my neighbors dog, which I’d prefer to not do but I wouldn’t hesitate to do if I caught his dog with one of my chickens or goats in his mouth.

Like i said dont care what you do or how your run your still. My dogs have never killed anything of my neighbours and they are both 140lb cane corsos. They have tye best care at home ,at the vet and are introduced to all my neighbours by name.We have a pretty civil lot living around us who take care of each others place when absent and care for one another. And if something as someones fkn chicken got hurt or anything else monitary restotution would be made along with deepest appologies and countermeasures to avoid it from happening again. Thus Uncle Jed not one person in our area would shoot a neigbours dog unless it was for personal safety.Again good luck in your neck of the woods.

You are also on the money

How do we get from some clown shooting a service dog to dogs running wild and chasing cattle ? The silly season is here already and it’s only December.

He shot it in a zone that doesn't have a wolf season.

It was also wearing a collar. The owners were close by (like 20 ft away if I remember right), but the dog had gone up and embankment onto a gravel road so the owners were out of sight down a hill.

Anyone who thinks that fat dog looks like a wolf hasn't seen many real wolves.

Regardless of the dogs status, this guy tried to poach a wolf, and only got caught because he shot someone's dog.

We’ve heard it all before from the city folk that move up and feel that dogs should be dogs and run free with the wind lol. “My dog is so well behaved, he’d never do that.”

My wife’s aunt an uncle said that as well when their two dogs would run off and chase cattle, after the second or third time they got shot. The idea of a fencing the property or training the dogs not to run off never seemed to be an option to them but I guess it was the rancher’s fault their cattle were getting chased and bit.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why should anyone with livestock take a loss on their time, investment, feed cost, animal housing and livelihood just so someone’s dog can run wild, people like that always say let nature take its course. Well nature around here usually comes in the form of a 30-30, monetary restitution for the animal lost just scratches the surface on what it costs to raise and care for livestock on an annual basis. Personally I’d rather see the problem dog destroyed, let the owner wonder what happened to their dog when it fails to return from it’s carefree journey. ;)

I remember when this went down
I also think the charges are appropriate considering the situation and the location.
It's a very popular area for hikers and dog walkers and the use of firearms and hunting in that specific area has been long debated by area residents.

funny thing , when me and my hunting partner got charged by a pack of wolves, when I saw the first one poke it's head over the ridge my first thought was "WTF is someone's dog doing out here?". Shoulda been buddy's first thought too, considering the location he was hunting.

Really good post. Situational awareness. No irresponsible trigger happiness.

This is where we differ as I stated before over and over. Not everyone lives like the Beverly Hillbillies, some actually comunicate and function like real neighbours but I guess that message never got through to ya.Most neighbours act like it. Keep shooting those pesky dogs Jed and one day an owner will pay u back 10 fold.Like nature to you comes in 3030 maybe theirs will be in 338 Lapua. For the rest here it was a crappy situation for the dog owners I'm sure and 1 idiot so called hunter fks up for the rest of us so yes he got what he deserved but probably not enough.Takes one idiot to turn a 100 against all other hunters. Cheers almost all

Love all the good feels.

Keep your animals off private property and no issues. Let em run on my property and cause issues with my animals.... they won’t get many chances. Responsible owners don’t let dogs run loose. Pets actually have no legal standing, they aren’t even livestock... if buddy fights that he’s gonna win with a lawyer.

Now I do amend my above, if owner was 3 feet away he is being responsible. “Hunter” is then in need of lessons and shouldn’t be hunting. But of course that’s spoken like I was there. And I wasn’t.
