Ruger American Ranch

Just unboxing my RAR 5.56mm AR mag rendition right now. UPS dropped it off this AM (yes, it’s Christmas Eve.) Tenda (board sponsor) had these on for $699. And yes, there’s a global pandemic on right now and of course me being EX-Infantry; I have to fzck things up royally and place my order on 15 Dec 20. 9 days from Richmond Hill, ON to Georgian Bay, ON. I am not complaining whatsoever. I’m just grateful this landed here before the Boxing Day Lockdown... ha ha ha ha.

First impressions before I mount up a scope and head to my range 20 minutes away.

* 5/10 round magazine is a Duramag C Products Defense unit. Orange follower. Not bad. Not too long, unlike my 5/30 CQB Pmags
* this baby is light...reminds me when I carried a C1A1 and on a US Army exchange they issued me an M16A1, then an M203
* Picatinny rail is (Norinco) sharp on my girly hands (now that I’m not working in Construction) this ain’t an EGW or Talley or NEAR
* Bolt cycling is decently smooth, and I’ve not CLP’ed up this bolt body, yet. Nor have I greased the bolt lugs
* this 16.2” barrel is hilarious!! Kinda like my wife’s 12” CQB AR barrel with a SPARC2. I’m used to a 20” C7A2 tube like barrel (SR)
* barrel is free floated already
* stock is cheap (hey, did you expect it not to be?) plastic and that’s fine for my coyote hunts and CQB drills in my basement (mirror commando, of course)
* bolt handle is factory small, but I’ve got a strap on coming (that sounded weird)
* action screws are 1/4” x 28 x 7/8” long. They use a 3/16” Allen key wrench
* now to adjust that trigger down to 3 lbs and lube that bolt body

Okay, time to mount up the Bushy 10 X 40 Mildot SFP and will print some groups

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

Okay, that was nice and cold, and icy on the range floor. I’m back and fed and ready to post

So this Ruger picatinny rail needed 3/32” Allen key driver. I wanted to torque all the 4 rail screws down to 17 in/lbs. I’m using a Brownells Torque wrench with Borka kit / bits. The 1/4” drive ratchet handle was not used.

It’s snowing up at my gun club, but we got many 3 round groups going. I did not choose to set up the LabRadar since it was snowing, the Doppler Radar would get all messed up reading/false reading the falling snowflakes. Why take a chance and risk lousy data? Next nice weather day, we can bust it open again.

I’ve got 3 bunches of ammo. 2 are handloads with 25.0 grains of WC735 (faster than H335 and BLC2). On top of the cases were Hornady 68 grain HPBT and then Remmy 62 grain HP; both are match quality boooolits. The Remmy 62 gr. Match booolits I bought many years ago for about $16 per 100 slugs. I’m just using them up. The Hornady 68 grain HPBT are my go-to booolit for SR back in my Connaught Range/ Mons Range days. That 68 grain boooolit has never let me down.....

That LabRadar is inside the padded blue briefcase.

Here are the results.....

Now to install a spare AR15 flash hider I had kicking around and it’s correct crush washer

I kinda like the CProducts Duramag length of 5/10 for this bench work. I tried my 5/30 PMags, and dropped to my elbows. Nice monopod feel with support hand bracing the bell of the scope. That’s another range report!

I just ordered a couple of the PMags 5/10 from TNA in Mississauga. Always had good results from PMags in my evil and now prohibited AR15 rigs.

For many years since 1985, I’ve been shooting a Service Rifle in one form or another, often I would dig out my groundhog rifle, a Remmy Varmint .223 or Winnie Coyote .223, then I would enter a Service rifle match with said bolt gun (civilian hunting pattern; no detachable magazine) outfitted with a set of Leupold turn in rings (not picatinny rail, with 20 MOA tilt), and run groundhog / coyote ammo (55 grains out of a 12” twist factory barrel). Often I would suffer several points in the rapid fire matches since I could only get about 6 or 7 out of 10 rounds off to the targets.

The M14 , The M1 Garands, and the AR15 rigs ruled the roost for their inherent military designs. Now with the Ruger American Ranch rifle; life is a great deal better. I can keep up, pretty closely with the Monopod’ed C7A2 and AR15 rigs (OIC sensitivity, ON). 5/30 round magazines for monopod style shooting in the prone/deliberate matches, 5/30 magazines for the rapid match reloads, Picatinny rail so I can swap any optics I want for CQB or Service Rifle... And finally 1 MOA capability to remain somewhat competitive at PR matches in Bravo Range, Garrison Petawawa (600m distance maximum).

What’s not to like in this fun gun??

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

One thing that might be good to know is about primers.

Even though this rifle is labeled 5.56, when 5.56 or .223 ammunition intended for use in black rifles is used, there can be quite a few failures to ignite. I would say that about 5% of Federal bulk box .223 ammunition won't ignite on the first snap and about half of those wont ignite with further hits. I tried some 5.56 of a couple of different makes the other day and failure rate was about 20%. Until now I had only fired the Federal bulk and some Hornady 75gr HPBT ammunition but I found about 200 rounds of various 5.56 ammo hiding in an ammo can the other day and decided to try it out.

I'm going to strip the bolts and see if there is any gunk built up in there that slows the firing pin but even when new there were some intermittent ignition problems with the Federal. I'm sure the rifles would like a good stripping anyway. :)

Just installed the MCarbo trigger spring and it dropped the trigger pull to a 10 pull average of 2 Lbs 0.3 Oz. That's with one thread still showing on the set screw. If I wanted to back it out a little more I'm sure I could get it under 2 Lbs but it feels good the way it is.

The action has also smoothed out considerably. No more zipper sound when you rack the bolt. I haven't bothered testing this one for groups yet as I only have Federal XM193 which isn't exactly target rifle material.

Had to jump in here to because I really do like these rifles. (stock ergonomics suck)

Got them in 223 and 7.62x39. The finish on the barrel and action certainly left something to be desired for me so I had them Cerakoted in Elite Smoke at Black Box Customs with their half price deal, much better! For factory ammo I have found the 223 is moa and better with Hornady Black 62g, and the 7.62 loves the PMC Bronze. Will be reloading for both soon.
Triggers are at 2lbs 6oz with Bic pen spring, full length

Brakes are Spectre Hex from Spectre Ballistics and work great, Scopes are Bushnell Trophy Xtreme 6-24x50 in UTG low profile rings

The target shown was shot by my wife with the 7.62 and PMC Bronze at 100yds with front sand bag and shouldered with no support, first time shooting it.

Got the Glades Armory 487 bolt handle installed today:

It feels much better than the factory knob. I need to get more proficient with disassembling this bolt though, it is a pain in the @ss.

Looks good!
I have the same but in stainless arm/black knob(lrg size). I ended up removing the O-rings. Found they liked to shift.....

So I cracked and got the Anarchy Outdoors firing pin removal tool. So much easier now! I wish Glades Armory had included something similar with their bolt handle rather than the little wedge tool they ship it with.

Fairly stock, magazine latch 'mod', MCarbo trigger spring, Anarchy Outdoors billet cocking piece and bolt shroud, got an MDT bolt knob yet to install.

5.56 Ruger American, uses AR mags. I added a Magpul Procomp and a Bushnell Elite Tactical 5-15X rescued from a newly prohibited....I am thinking that I want to save up to put her in a MDT chassis....

If these were made in a left hand version, I would buy one in both 223 and 300blk

I have like a million ammo of 7.62x39mm that I cannot use anymore due to our smart government. Would really like to own one of these bad boys in that caliber. There is a sale at Cabelas right now on those riffles (100$ off), however only the 5.56 is on sale :( I would have been all over a 7.62x39mm one.

I have the bulk ammo coming from Russia that is corrosive. But everytime I used that ammo with my VZ-58, I deep cleaned the riffle while watching a movie afterward. So I did not really mind. After few years there are not a pixel of rust anywhere on that VZ. But that thing is indestructible, mine survived 5 days under water during a flooding. I cannot say the same for all my other riffles :(

All to say, wonder how these Ruger American Ranch would hold up against that bulk corrosive ammo if maintained the same way. So if you have one in this caliber and use corrosive ammo, please let us know how it goes!
