Ruger American Ranch

The price on these rifles is almost back to where it was before the buying frenzy after the OIC prohibited the AR platforms. Had seen some retailers were selling them well north of $650 that they were originally selling them for as they became scarce.

To you current owners, wondering what AR pattern 10 shot magazines you would recommend. Or perhaps the better question is what magazines would you avoid. A local retailer (Bullseye) has Mission First Tactical LAR-15 pistol magazines.

Would prefer to pick up the rifle, a couple of spare magazines, and the bulk Federal American Eagle .223 Rem. FMJ (which is already on sale and I need some brass for reloading) in one place to try & leverage a little better deal.

Thanks in advance
Tom

I picked up 2 for 1200 a few years ago. 7.62x39 and the 5.56. Guess that was a decent price.

Thanks!

Also anyone running 1" low weaver rings on this?
How is the clearance? I hate high sitting scopes. Not sure what to take a chance on here.

I bought a set of Leupold Med rings $30. I've used these rings before with zero issues. Mounted a Bushnell 1-4x Engage and fits me nicely.
With a 70degree throw your scope should clear with low rings.

Heading to the Range tomorrow so I'll add pics of my new toy when I get home.....

Aw what the heck....here are some quick pics of my new Ruger Ranch 5.56/223 with a Bushnell 1-4x Engage No.4 German reticle with luminated dot.
Tossed on a surplus sling and butt-cover and picked up a MFT 10rnd mag to test. The pipe is a TNA product that looks pretty neat :).

Good looking gun Sir! How does the pipe work, tame the noise a bit?

There's also a Remington Seven in 300blk. I chose that over the american mostly because of the action. Threaded barrel but no box mag, and it looks like the only conversions are badger ordinance for another $350-400. Still happy with it though.

I would prefer a reliable internal mag, vs a questionable detachable setup. Would you know the max oal of the cartridge it could take? I have a .308 180grn flat point bullet mold that would hopefully work in a rifle this caliber, but it's gonna have to have a really good feed ramp, and high purchase at the rear of the bolt. It works wonderfully in my Tikka in an mdt chassis.

Thanks Grain.
Just got back from the outdoor Range. My buddy (who was in the next stall (separated by a piece of 3'x4' plywood) said it was still LOUD! Just the way I like it.....lol
It was a PITA using a sand bag so I have a bipod ordered. Just picked up 500rnds at Tenda on the way home. This little Ruger is a blast to shoot:)...and the MFT and all my Colt 5/20(6) worked flawlessly.....

Couple crappy under exposed cell phone pics at the Range

Very nice, looks like a lovely day at the range! I ordered a Noveske K5 pig to try and direct the blast away from the shooter. Looking forward to trying it out.

Really like my American Ranch in 5.56.

One complaint is that longer mags have a really loose fit. I found the The Cross Ind. cross mags to be so loose that they were unusable.

My smaller LAR mags, especially the MFT LAR-15 10-round polymer mag, fits nice. I would recommend these mags.

Anyone else find longer mags to be loose even with a closed bolt?

It was a perfect day! 25C and low humidity, slight breeze. The place was empty:)
I saw the Pig at Tenda but $179 was too rich for me. I'm sure it will work well and look great.

relayer....I found the weight of 5/30 mags would cause Snap caps to not feed properly. If you push the heel of the mag forward (after pulling the bolt back) a round would feed. However, I only tried one mag.

Try any PMAGs? I'm hoping 10 rounders work ok.

The 10-round pmags work well.

Here are the mags I've tested:
PMAG 5/10 round
PMAG 5/30 round
Hera H3MAG 5/30 round
MFT LAR-15 10/10-round polymer
CPD LAR-15 10/10 round steel
CPD LAR-15 10/30 round steel
Cross Industries LAR-15 coupling mag

MFT LAR-15 10/10-round polymer mags performed the best for me followed by the 10-round PMAG. It seemed to fit a touch better...and is a pistol mag.

The 30-rounders appear to have a bit more play just by the nature that they are longer, if you knock them about they are prone to the odd feed issue. I would also say that the polymer mags work a little better than the steel mags. I did experience the odd feed issue with the steel LAR-15 mags.

The only one I would absolutely not use is the Cross Industries LAR-15 coupling mag. I saw some stores advertising these with this rifle and thought it was poor choice.

I've been using the RRA metal pistol mags and they work well. I've tried about 25 individual magazines in 2 rifles and they all perform except one which seems to like to double feed, but pretty sure that's a nag problem and not a compatibility problem. The MFT pistol mags work fine too, but hold the bolt open after the last shot is ejected. I find that a bit weird for a bolt action but others may like this feature.

Mine wears a fixed 10x40 from bushnell because of the style of shooting I do with it. But for its intended use, variable 2-7 or a red dot is perfect.

Any scope magnification suggestions?

Depends on what you want to do with your RRanch.
For me...most of my shooting happens inside 100yrds so not only does a 1-x4 with illuminated red dot work for me but the compact size suits the look I'm going after for my stubby thumper :)

johNTO, the MDT Chassis added quite a bit of accuracy to the rifle and takes it to a whole new level....and yes, it takes standard AR mags. I use the pistol ones and they work perfectly. The 5/30 magpul mags work but are too long for this application.
