M40 Family - Who owns one?

What do you think your final cost on this build will be?

For me or for someone else? :p

Since I work there I don't pay any of the gunsmithing build fees and I get all the items at 30% below retail cost.

The stock was used so I'm getting that for $400. The action will be about $350. The magazine kit will be $175, the rail piece was $125, and the trigger will be $160. Just waiting on the price of the barrel.

Then the only other cost will be the price of the paint and cerakote.

Finally have my M40A5 clone/tribute rifle almost done....

So... I needed the correct or at least close to correct scope/rings. $$$ Ouch!!! Happened to come across a package deal on the EE that also had rifle I've wanted for a long time (Kimber Advanced Tactical 308). On a side note it's a Wnchester M70 version of a tactical rifle in an A5 tan stock. It's beautiful in it's own right... So a rifle I've always wanted and the listed had S&B scope plus badger rings. Saw some photos... Suspected the rings were the USMC ones and the scope was close enough.

Oh and it came with the correct Harris bipod as well. However I had a new one anyways So I kept the old one on the Kimber.

Components: S&B scope 3-12 x 50 LM PMII / P P3 It has the second gen mildot reticle.
Rings: Badger Ordnance USCMC set.

But like all things in life, the best things require some work.. the scope/rings were done in tan/dark brown camo.

Almost finished product:

This is a a M40A5 Mcmillan stock but not the correct issued one as it has the better one adjustment knob for the cheek piece which was never issued. Oh and a special thanks to Chatrbaz84 for getting me into this project along with some info regarding the actual specs etc. You can find his very cool thread here https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2195429-Range-Report-PGW-M15-Clone-M40A5

The stock has the PGW EFR mount which was bedded into the A4 stock. Also this stock has sniper fill. Other than the cheek piece having the one knob system, it's fairly close to the real thing. I bought Badger bottom metal for this as well when it was on Sale for Black Friday. Helped keep the mounting costs down.

The rifle guts: It's a Gen2 Remington 5R milspec. Found this on the EE. It came with trigger tech trigger but it's not the right one. It's a straight blade with silver colour. But very nice. Also the Surefire muzzle brake isn't the right one as it's the LR308. That being said, I do actually have the correct M40A5 muzzle brake. But... it would require having my barrel thinned near the muzzle in order for the brake to fit. I'm not sure I want to do that at this time. I may upgrade the Surfire version that has the supressor quick detach on it. But this was a package deal that is actually fairly nice. For those that don't know the gen2 5R has a 24" 1:11.25 twist barrel stainless with stainless action that is cerekoted black along with an enlarged tactical bolt handle. The gen2 is also fluted, but it's very minor and hard to tell unless you see it in the right light. I'm a big fan of the Remington 5R rifles.

Here's what it currently looks like..

I haven't seen hard numbers on SSA production, but I've read that there were 500, 1000, and 1200 rifles made from different sources. All of these totals were stated by different people who seemed to have some inside knowledge.....

Then there was the later Chuck Mawhinney edition, I've read there were 125 of those made. Don't know if any of this helps you.

I’m thinking of following your route stock wise. May have to put a WTB on the EE and source one.

Its a new 700 I bought last year, mistakenly bought a sporter profile when I thought it was a varmint. Re-barreled and action work done by a local smith. Finished with cerakote and assembled by me. A member here responded to a wanted ad for a stock, and I turned an old ADL stock into this with a linseed oil finish.

Good things come to those who wait……

Picked up a genuine Unertl 10x for a good price and some horse trading of some spare but rare items. The windage turret and elevation fine tune were just about frozen but it turned out to be a simple fix. The scope had been serviced by Iron Sight but the o-rings used on those turrets were too small and ending up binding up both turrets.

The outer o rings are just for dust and there are more inside for the waterproofing which were original and in good shape. A couple of bucks for new o-rings and some dialectric silicone grease and it works perfect. I’ll see if a local telescope shop can do a nitrogen purge after I’m done.

So after the barreled action comes back from the gunsmith I’ll be assembling M40A1 version 2 with a little more detail. It’s old school but I like the set up just the same.

Wow…that’s a major score! Looking forward to seeing this build come together!

What make are the scope caps and what sizes are they?

What make are the scope caps and what sizes are they?

They are Butler Creek covers, it didn’t have them but I got a set and they are the same as what came on the USO MST-100 I had on the other rifle.

Objective is a 25, I think it was part number 30250

Rear (Ocular) is a Multiflex in a 19 or 20, part number 21920?

I'm in the process of building a 700 to be a bit of a mash up between an M40A5 and an M24 though leaning more towards M40A5. I'll be sure to post the results of the build when its completed.

Just need the scope now. You have one in mind for it? Or the strike force on that shorty build?

I sold that scope with the rifle but only because it was an MOA scope and I wanted an MRAD instead. So I might just buy the MRAD version to stick on this rifle. I'd like a Nightforce ATACS but don't really want to spend that money right now.
