Crappy cerakoting job

Wow, that is scary. As others have mentioned, the firearm is now ruined because of their sloppy work, they should almost be liable to replace it with a new one at this point.
If that is also a family air loom (coming from your Dad?) then even a new replacement is not enough. They should give it to their most competent guy to redo from scratch, making it 100% working and to your liking, and not charge you for the work. I think that would be the only "fair" compensation.

I would agree with you. How could he take it to a different shop and say “fix this” ? I would be inclined to talk with the original guy and ask him “what happened?” and go from there. Maybe a new helper screwed it up. If this shop was doing quality work before it would behoove them to redo this and make it more than right.

This could be the shop’s way to restore credibility and make things right.

The "take away" from this thread is like anything else, ask the business/applicator how much experience they have? setup, and how they are going to preform the job? Pictures of finished work is key & not just one, and lastly "word of mouth" if it's available. If you look at BBC, they do impeccable work, as I'm an applicator, & when I sent them my slide, I asked all the questions and got all the right answers. YMMV.

Cerakote is "easy" to apply IMO, very forgiving for anyone "new to it, however "prep", "running the gun" etc takes patience and experience to get that perfect finish.

Everyone, in every profession, can have days that their performance is off .. days that their judgement was not spot on. This will happen to everyone.

In any type of surface refinishing (Cerakote, powder coating, anodizing) , preparation is key.. it is basic... it is common sense.... it is something has to be done with no exceptions.

If you went to a restaurant or ordered a medium well steak but instead got one that was rare, then you (like most of us) would be reasonable about it and send it back to allow them to make it right.

But if you saw the cook took a dump on his break and did not wash his hands before leaving the bathroom and saw him go back into the kitchen, would you give him a chance to see if he'd wash his hands .... or would you just go to different steak house ?

Nobody should have to remind a cook to wash his hands after using the bathroom.

I am afraid to borescope it. But shipping it out to Black Box on Monday. Not really much more in price. Should have known better. Will keep this posted when I have some decent results.

This is why I don't like painted finishes. And blasting ruins it from ever getting a nice bluing.

Nothing to do with coatings they could do the same damage if they blued it .Grit blasting doesn't ruin it .I have grit blasted lots of restoration pieces and then polished them up.Gun coatings are far superior to bluing if applied properly .I don't use bluing any more .I dont have an example of high gloss but you can not tell the difference from bluing.

I’ve seen pics of some of your work. Outstanding workmanship. You’re right, can’t tell the difference by those pics.

Thanks. I always thought it left pitting and when you blued it, came out satinish. ..

Those look lovely! Are the stocks all finished with Daly's?

I'm not normally one to breaking out pitchforks and getting on bandwagons, but as far as public service announcements go, this one is lacking.

The firearm appears to have been damaged. So not only is the business who did the work getting off lightly with respect to out of pocket expenses, but the OP is doing them a service by protecting their reputation by way of keeping this matter confidential.
To add insult to injury, with the little information the OP has provided, the reputation of other Ontario dealers are actually taking a hit while the original shop's is being protected as a result.

Not liking to gamble with our property, especially heirlooms, a cautious individual like myself would simply cease all business with firearms dealers in Ontario as a precaution...
While that isn't very likely in my case as I have very excellent smiths and service local to me, that still isn't very fair to your local related businesses now is it?

I'm glad BlackBox is local.

Ok, well i will be the man to own up to this one. You all want to know so i will dive in.

I am a certified Cerakote applicator running Dufferin County Firearm Finishes and have been doing guns for many years. Casey at Tactical Ordnance sends me his customers for Cerakote if he is too busy. I have only ever had one complaint and that was a light spray in a corner during application which i gladly re did. As i said to the owner, send it back and i will fix this. THIS IS NOT ME!!!
I have so many happy customers and i can not explain what happened to this firearm other than i had a bad day, rushed, wife pissed me off. I don't know.

No excuse, I know.

I would have gladly paid for someone else to complete the job, had he asked and still will if he did not want to send it back to me.

My complete negligence on this firearm was not acceptable i know, for that sir i am sorry. '

Jordy at DCFF did a recent cerakote job on my new Marlin 336BL. Late March I believe. Gun was parkerized at the factory and was rusting on my lap during a bear hunt last August. 30 deg celcius and 80% humidity. Totally impressed with his workmanship. Gun was flawless inside and out. I will be getting him to do my next one as well without hesitation.
