chamberings on -06 head sized bolt faces?

Well, there are numerous 30-06 options. Few versions of improved chambers, RCBS, Ackley Gibbs, Hawk etc. I've owned a few of them. I have a fast twist 30-06 Improved (RCBS version) I put together on a Savage a while back, just to shoot heavier bullets. Sometimes you just look at what you have and say "hey, I can could do......". - dan

Agree. I have both the 280 and a 7x64. Ballistically they are practically twins. the x64 wins in the cool factor though. - dan

It is a very nice cartridge. Smooth feeding, moderate recoil, enough powder to push heavier 170+ grain 7mm pills. Good choice for any NA game and most others.

How is the 7X64?

Top rifle is a 7X64 Brenneke... I have had half a dozen or so over the years, Nice, easy shooting hunting cartridge.

Always wanted to try a 7x64 brenneke

i always wanted a 30-06 when it was prohibited for me so i had a 7x64, 9.3x62 and 300 weatherby mag. today i have finally a 30-06 and of course still the 9.3x62 (different continent but still great caliber to use).

great caliber for sure but now i prefer the 30-06 but i wont feel undergunned with the old european lady for sure.

I don't believe by going up in caliber would have anymore killing effect on game. You have more bullet combinations leaving it as a 30-06 than anything else. It might be boring but it's the truth. Most of us can't handle the truth! lol

Bullet placement
Bullet construction
Then power /penetration , there is significantly more power in the .35 but you suffer trajectory for it .

I doubt that most hunters here in Canada would see a significant difference between a 30-06/200gr NP and a 35Whelen with 225gr NPs on heavier game.

That's why us gun loonies have some disdain for the 30-06. Deep down we all know that we could sell all our cool & oddball chamberings, hunt everything with a 30-06 and want for NOTHING! :)

This is true. Hard to write off a 30-06.

100% agree , which is why the one of the best loads for the Whelen is 250 gr. To be fair if you adhere to the first tenants of placement and construction the rest can become ballistic hubris … until that brown bears ears go back .

Just shoot 8x57 and get the cool points, borderline 06 performance and 196 grain bullets

That's a good choice too. I've worked up a load in one of my 8x57's with 180gr TSX and H4895 which averaged 2778 fps between 7 shots with MOA accuracy. That's out of a 22 inch barrel. That's on par with a 30-06 in my books.

Good way to get 30-06ish performance from a single shot or double with the rimmed casing too.

Something just seems right about a heavy semi spitzer or round nose in the 8mm.

Still want to give the 250 woodleigh a shot, for science you know

The 200 gr NP .308 bullet has a higher BC and SD than both the 225gr and 250 gr NP .358 bullets. The whelen will hit harder but not enough to make much of a difference on this continent. With a 30-06 you have way more bullet combinations than the whelen. I do understand the need for oddball cartridges though, I've got some myself. :)

Quick load shows some impressive loads that can be worked up with Re17. 2400fps is doable in a 24 inch barrel.

Always interesting to see how the 8 mm pairs up against cgn darling the 358 win. Still not approaching the 338-06, 35 whelen or 9.3 with 250’s though

Easy, 90% of my game taken say 80yds and in. A function of walking and terrain I'm sure. All this high bc stuff applies after 500 yds. So Whelan with small/fast for bore bullets....carry large premium in tight country. Accomplish something a 338wm can't do better, hardly. But hey 06 thread, and we're gunnutz.
