chamberings on -06 head sized bolt faces?

Good way to get 30-06ish performance from a single shot or double with the rimmed casing too.

Something just seems right about a heavy semi spitzer or round nose in the 8mm.

Still want to give the 250 woodleigh a shot, for science you know

Tried those in my 8 Rem Mag. Couldn't get sufficient accuracy, but I'm not done yet. Have some new powders to try. - dan

I wonder if h4350 would be a good powder for the baby whelen load.

Probably try out the 220 woodleigh first, just need more time and money lol

6x57, 6.5x57, 7x64, 9x57, 338-06, 375 whelen, 400 whelen. Likely many more, those were just off the top of my head. - dan

It’s been said above ^^^ the 400 Whelen , fascinating caliber . I’ve thought about one based on a short barreled bush gun . 18.5” with a Leupold pig reticle .

you made a 338-06 from a bsa featherweight? I have a basically brand new in box 30/06 bsa royal featherweight. It has spent its life oiled in a silicone sock since the 80’s. I’ve dialed it in and taken it hunting lightly but never was successful those days. I don’t need more rifles but I’m interested in making a rifle that should have a stronger following into a strange awesome thing. I was thinking 35 Whelan or silly with a .375 or .400 whelan in a slim barrel. Not a long range gun, but the handiest short range one. Can you please send me the info for the gunsmith that did the barrel change? I bought it for a song and it owes me nothing, making it silly is worth some money.

If I had to pick a single cartridge to hunt with for the rest of my life it would be the 338-06.

Bull moose at ~200 yards. 210 TTSX @ 2800 fps. Bull went 50 yards and tipped over.

BSA Royal Featherweight. 24" King barrel, 3-9 x 40 scope. 8 pounds scoped.

B.C. &S.D. is a discussion for target shooting. Use a rifle(s) you have confidence in and practice a lot. 400 yd shots with a 338-06? Try a paper plate at 400 yds from off hand or kneeling, that will give you some perspective on what you are proposing.

i rebarreled a Husqvarna lightweight in 270 to 9.3x62 improved . i had to rework the magazine for the longer round , but it was fairly straight forward

It is much wider than a .270 at the shoulder, even a standard 9.3 x62 is. The 9.3x62 is sort of improved already. I have a couple of 9.3x62’s and a 35 Whelen and the measurement’s of the shoulder width is quite different.

what did you need to do?

standard 9.3x62 would have fit without issues , just a little widening around the nose of the bullet for the larger rounds .

i took either half a turn or 1.5 turns out of a 9.3x62 barrel , recut the chamber and mounted it upside down , using the rear sight base as a recoil lug .

i headspaced it on 9.3x62 , to be able to shoot both rounds

OK, thinking about sticking with factory ammo, so I wasnt expecting issues.

My Zastava was a bit too generous as far as sloppy bolt and crappy trigger but it was potentially going to be a .400 Whelen project. Super interesting cartridge. A little bit more pop (~100 fps) than a .405 Winchester, which is no slouch. Best part is the extra velocity isn't so much that you'll push bullets beyond their performance envelope.

I like the idea of 350-400gr haymakers at 2000-2300 on black bears, not that they need that kind of hammering but they can bite back when they're angry. Would be a fun brown bear gun too if the opportunity presented itself.

You need to take up handloading. It's a great way to expect issues. :)

Uhhh, no! This is a fun cheap project, not a crazy old man mortgaging the home project :p
Besides, a fancy new stainless barrel will mean I can buy cheap old gunshow fodder and run it

Is there any particular reason everyone seems to jump to something heavier and more powerful than an 30-06?

Why not go to a 257 Roberts? Low recoil, easy to handload for, available factory ammunition, and would be just about perfect for any deer in BC. If you're going to build a rifle, why not build one you can shoot all day with a smile on your face.

Agree .... Was shooting mine today. Gave me the same smile as it did +/- 17yrs ago when I got it.

Good luck finding anything at all these days, let alone cheap. :)

The action and stock are already big and kinda clunky, why not try something a little larger to utilize those features. As for a 257, I built to 7X57s, and they kinda trump it, so just not a round for me.

Hey, show some faith. The guy who dug all the vintage 7X57 will scrounge up some cheap ammo. Honestly, I see some of it regularly at the gunshows in Alberta.

The 338-06 outperforms the 35 Whelen in trajectory and retained velocity and energy...
