Black Creek Labs AR180 based rifle SVR2 Siberian approved for Non restricted FRT

If I'm not mistaken BCL helped build the R18 MK1 and that's a nice-looking, well-built rifle that has eaten everything I've fed it. ....

This is incorrect: BCL had nothing to do with the Sterling R18 MK2. Separate companies and separate IP.

Saying that: I am looking forward to this on the market.

Have they or anyone else released pictures of the gas system setup? I haven't been able to find anything.

Just a description so far. A well secured gas block, to prevent rotation, and mid-length piston, made of two parts to allow flexing instead of snapping and no spring running along the piston, so it will have no necking down to a thinner portion as a weak point. I've suggested to them on Instagram they should do a Forgotten Weapons style tear down, but so far no response.

Along with the Lynx, the R18 and Siberian both share the ability to use the Zhukov stock, with the Zhukov being the default Siberian stock. SBI went with a swappable rear piece for the Zhukov on the Lynx, whereas BCL has gone with the a Zhukov/Yugo AK to 1913 adapter for the Siberian. Not sure what Sterling/TSE went with on the R18. I wonder if BCL and possibly Sterling/TSE went with a Haga 1913 to Zhukov adapter, or if they used an in-house adapter?

The Bolt in the R18 isn't made by BCL?

Also the barrel, mag release, and both bolt releases on the R18 all scream of BCL design cues and finish. You mean to tell me none of these were sourced through BCL or made in the same facilities where BCL components are produced?

I'm not asking these questions in an attempt to bring the R18 down. It is a well-designed rifle and is equally well finished in my opinion, definitely the most refined 180 Canada has seen so far and I think the value for dollar spent is reasonable considering the marketplace, especially now that it has had some time to prove itself and grow through a couple small issues. That being said I immediately picked up on the latter few things mentioned as being extremely similar in both design aspects and finish to BCL products.

Sure would be nice to see the gas system. I guess one of the beta testers will have to post it instead.

Personally, I am far more interested in seeing how they reconfigured the AR180 system to fit within the reduced dimensions of that Upper Receiver. Did they go to a single Guide/Operating Rod and Spring? Of did they just shrink everything down dimensionally?

As I recall, BCL mentioned that they had no plans on producing additional models/variants until C-21 is sorted out. So I imagine different colours are off the table for now.

Anyway it's nice to see them finally shipping out, although the lack of technical info is pretty concerning. As much as I'd like to order one, I think I'll wait for a braver soul to tear one down and make a preliminary report.

As someone reminded me on Instagram, the Zhukov is attaching through an artfully inconspicuous 1913/Picatinny adapter to the back of the Siberian. It can be removed and swapped with any skeletonized 1913 stock for that lovely SIG Spear LT look. From their post, https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckf3On0LAnC/

I'm glad they made that decision. I hate buffer tubes on the back of piston rifles.

From the look at the pictures, I'd say it won't eject properly if fired fully folded, but that's more of a novelty then anything, and it will still fold for transport nicely. If you really wanted to fire folded, the stock attaches via 1913, so you could probably find another folding 1913 stock that won't impede the port.

It looks like the non-reciprocating charge handle is far enough forward that you might be able to fold the stock to the left after charging the rifle. Midwest Industries/Manticore Arms and B5 systems have 180ish 1913 type stocks that might work

It would be cool if someone like TSE would bring in the BRN-180 style stock, as I it would look good on many of our 180 based rifles, either on the ones with the 1913 stock point or using a buffer tube to 1913 adapter.

I'm waiting for them to arrive at my LGS. It looks really promising... If they get the reliability down this really could be the best AR180 platform rifles we have.
