How to describe your shotgun for sale

I don't think I have ever asked who the previous owner was because if it is a fairly old gun the owner likely doesn't know its history and if they claim to, it could be a bunch of made up stuff that is not accurate or truthful at all. I buy going by condition of the gun according to the price being asked.

I ask as well. I was surprised to find so many people flip guns out of estate aquisitions without ever firing them. Some really have little idea what they have.

I find how they answer tells me a little something about the seller. And that may tell me a little about the deal I might be entering in to. When I'm buying a 120 yo gun, I never expect the seller to know anything. But I ask to hear what they say.

I lesson I learned was never trust anyone named Walt from southern Ontario. But more widely speaking never buy anything who doesn't understand your question and can't answer it clearly with proof.
No matter how friendly they seem over the phone. And pictures can be deceiving if you've put on rose coloured glasses. When he didn't what cast" meant I should have run.
But I trusted him when he reported back on all my questions, right eyed shooter, 2 3/4 chamber etc. I now own a left-handed gun , 2.5 in chamber, with a loose stock.
Needless to say I can get no refund from "Walt" because "I am wrong" regarding cast, "I broke it" regarding the stock, etc. This is the first time I have been ripped off, and it taught me a lesson. Vintage firearms need special considerations and safeguards.

That's sucks and while I have made some suspect purchases as I was learning about vintage, I must say I have been pleasantly surprised at how many good people I have dealt with.

Very sound advice. Many people may not have specific knowledge about a particular gun or type of gun but how they try to understand my questions and help can speak volumes. The initial ad for a shotgun is nearly worthless without ……
Make
Model (if known)
Action type
Gauge
Chamber length ( if marked)
Barrel length
Single or double triggers on a double
Chokes ( if known)
A few clear sharp photos showing factory markings, damage or wear and attractive features like high quality wood will answer some of these questions without descriptions being necessary. Some other features like stock dimensions, lockup integrity, etc will need more detailed probing. Fuzzy pictures, vague descriptions, incorrect descriptions or the inability to answer carefully worded basic questions will often give me the impression that the vendor is trying to hide something and is a quick turn off for me.

I see many people listing shotguns for sale without even mentioning the gauge. The fact that you think you can require people like that to list length of pull, date of manufacture and NRA condition is hilarious.

It's a big country full of diversity and different languages.
Many have English as a second language and willing as they might be , can't meet your demands for details or a phone conversation.

Some of these questions being asked is akin to asking a car seller about cam timing or alternator current rating.

I'd likely just delete your message, same as when people as where I'm located even though I list shipping included, no local pickup in the ad

What a crock! Your comparison is ridiculous. Everything listed so far can be ascertained by a visual examination. a measuring tape or a clear photograph. What is required is an interest in answering the questions and making a sale. So many people on this site, while complaining about buyers’ behaviours, demonstrate they haven’t a clue about how to sell something and get top dollar.

Many don't. Pics to e-mail. It separates the serious buyers from the tire kickers.

No it doesn't. It encourages "tire kickers". If pics are posted in the ad I can skip on by if I'm not interested. If I have to email for pics then you've wasted my time and yours if I see problems or it's not what I'm looking for.

Include as much info as possible. Some good pics of key areas and any damage saves a lot of wasted time. The thing I don’t get is members that will buy something shipped but won’t ship anything! They have adds on here every week. Just sell ur guns local and not waste everyone’s time that doesn’t live close enough for pickup in your little world.

It is my business if it's a lemon or has other condition issues. I won't hesitate to return a gun that shows up with undisclosed condition issues.

Not disclosing issues is different than me telling you why I'm selling.
If it jams, has a bulge in the barrel ,light strikes eta would be disclosed.
Why I'm selling is still none of your business

Telling me it has a 14" LOP is nothing I can't find by googling the model# ,just as all your concerns.

Who has time to get into multiple lengthy emails or telephone calls

By not disclosing the reason for selling I am going to take the preemptive assumption that your hard up for cash, live beyond your means and are not responsible with your money, have a substance problem and so on and so on.

You know that guns often get modified over the course of their existence? Most guns I buy are between 50 and 130 yo. A lot can happen in that time.

The point of the OP was what basic info should be included in the ad. Thereby negating the need for lengthy emails? Lengthy emails. LOP Bwahahaha!

I always ask if not in the ad. It is my business when it's a used item.

I know they alsways say to buy the item, not the story... but I for one, really enjoy the story.
- when buying, I like to chat with the owner. About his/her experience with the gun and why they are selling it... and more often than not, will stay away from someone just trying to flip it.

Me too. And when you run across that, it is, as I suggested, a window into the person I'm doing the deal with. Best for me was a elderly couple selling three shotguns who had lived in Sun Valley Idaho for 45 years. They had moved there from directly across Lake Ontario from where I live now, in the centre of the Upstate New York gun making region. My grandmother's sister had moved to Sun Valley from Winnipeg in the 1930s. Turns out they had known each other. As we were working out the deal I had numerous long conversations with the sellers about chukar hunting in Idaho and Montana. It was fascinating.

Big deal about nothing. In the 100s of guns I sold in over 19 years, LOP wasnt something that was brought up.

It's only really applicable on high end trap/skeet guns.

Shotgun for sale. Google is yur friend. NO PICTURE COLLECTORS! This was owned by my buddy's uncle's cousin, who killed a ton of birds with it. This one time, he pointed the gun at a bird about 100 yards away and pulled the trigger and dropped the goose stone cold dead! Shoots straight! I know what I have, so no lowballers. YOU WILL BE IGNORED.
