I don't think I have ever asked who the previous owner was because if it is a fairly old gun the owner likely doesn't know its history and if they claim to, it could be a bunch of made up stuff that is not accurate or truthful at all. I buy going by condition of the gun according to the price being asked.
I ask as well. I was surprised to find so many people flip guns out of estate aquisitions without ever firing them. Some really have little idea what they have.
I find how they answer tells me a little something about the seller. And that may tell me a little about the deal I might be entering in to. When I'm buying a 120 yo gun, I never expect the seller to know anything. But I ask to hear what they say.
