Help me find/make my do it all rifle. EDIT:WE DID IT

Your from Alberta on CGN for 10years with 5000+ posts and still can’t figure out what ya want?

I've been shooting for over 60 years and still don't know . . .

When I first got into it, anything that went bang made me happy. Then I got into trap, then rimfire, then long range... Now im just trying to have that one gun I can always reach for. For fun, hunting or targets.

The Ruger scouts are excellent IMO. There are aftermarket stocks you can get with adjustable combs (I believe Boyds makes one and I'm sure others do too, but you could also just get a riser installed on the laminate) and the recoil is pleasant for a .308. I don't want to criticize your Bergara direction, because they are fine rifles and I hope you are happy, but why would you not get a stainless do-all rifle? Who wants to have the do-it-all solution and be worried about the greatest enemy to guns: rust??

Ive never really been a huge ruger fan.

I love EVERYTHING about the Sig Cross EXCEPT the picky for ammo reports. Everyone who owns one seems to love it and says its super accurate when do they do find the right ammo. This is reflected in most videos of them, people are let down with the accuracy.
Spending 2500 bucks on something that a $400 Axis can out shoot hurts lol. No matter how cool, light, modern it is.

I like bergara because the 700 clone will be able to have tons of parts swapped out. Barrels are super good, rifles are accurate. I feel they are really well priced also. Just on the heavy side.

I really dabbled with going with the Tikka t3x CTR and putting it into a chassis. The Canadian armed forces just purchased the artic (they call it the c19). Tikka shoots well, has a rock solid and smooth action. Also as popular as the 700.
Tikka just does not have anything under 20" for barrels, that being said I can always buy a barrel.

Tikka ctr and don't look back. I'd change bm to aics mags though.

Would it not make more sense to go with a T3X Compact, Since I would change to a chassis and bottom metal to AICS anyways? (mind you heavy barrel thats threaded is nice)

Or step up to the UPR ? The bottom metal changed to AICS but the stock is fine other then the ugly colour, nothing a rattle can cant fix though.

Remington 5R milspec. The gen 1 20” is threaded. Any chassis you like ( magpul pro, MPA etc)
, or stock. McMillan stock etc ( A3-5 is a good multi purpose). Gen2 gets a bit pricey these days. But also a great option if you can find one.

If you can find one cheap enough or on a Black Friday sale, the Tikka T3X A1 tactical. Providing you like the chassis.

More hunting orientated is the Thompson center Icon. The SS 5R barrel will put 3 rounds in one hole before warming up and opening the group.

Good luck.

If you want it to shoot a wide range of out of box ammo such as federal gold, you will want a 20” barrel.

The 5R would still be my first choice with your criteria.

I have two of the TC Icons with the 5R barrels. One in 308 and one in 22-250. The 308 is so accurate that I don’t even bother hand loading for it. The only rifle of many I don’t hand load for. Too bad they’re not produced any longer. Super smooth bolt and nicely balanced in my opinion. Federal 165 Trophy Bonded Premiums are the deal with this gun!!

My sig cross in .308 is flawless with what ever ammo i so far tried.
And accurate enough for my needs . But .45-70 SBL sounds like a good option as well..

Well your budget makes buying/building the rifle you seek easy....in fact buy/build 2 of em identical so you have redundancy

I agree that sadly the AR10 would have been ...and still could be the answer
Politics and rule of law aside....meets all your criteria and some other that I cherish....likely never require gunsmith....armorer level competency and a hammer/vicegrips can keep it in the game forever....light/accurate enuf...ideal all around caliber in one of the most likely to find ammo for now and going forward....and can be pressed into a serious defensive weapon if need be.

A 308 bolt rifle ( 2 identical ones..even 3) in the size/weight/features of your choice is a solid choice...Rem700 mostly due to the vast array of parts/accessories currently and more importantly going forward. The various tactical versions especially milspec and ltr are well worth the couple hundred bux more than the run of the mill versions and are notably more accurate and better build quality.

IF your requirement wasnt 300yd reach but more realistically 200 and under Id make a case for an SKS....meets a lot of only 1 rifle requirements...accuracy obviously being a soft spot.....altho again IF a 300yd reach is realistically reduced to under 200yds and you arent expecting to snipe bunnies/partridge at 100yds the rifle will suffice...and the rusky rd will do the job if the shooter does....plentiful ammo that is lighter to carry in any volume....they arent as cheap as they once were.....I actually flogged off most of my SKS and replaced them with Ruger Ranches when they became fairly close in price....the RuskyRanch is accurate/durable/light/user friendly and inexpensive....parts wont be as plentiful going forward either retail or certainly scrounging tho as a rem700 will always be.

I want to build the one rifle to rule them all... One rifle to find them, One rifle to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. To carry in the land of Alberta where the shadows lie.

Ok ok, enough fun. I have been grappling with this for months. I will lay out some "ground rules" and will also list some rifles I have considered.
Lets see if it is out there or if I will have to go custom/semi custom.

"Rules"
Around or Under 8lbs.
308 Win - I want to be able to shoot any animal and find ammo anywhere.
20" or shorter barrel - Looking for it to be a handy rifle.
Accurate - I dont hand load, I wont be starting anytime soon either. I dont want an ammo picky rifle, I like when a brand has a guarantee.
Price - I would like to stay under 3000 ideally.
Modern Egro's - I have a high cheek spot on my face. I always require an aftermarket piece or adjustable stock.

Rifles I have looked at and the I have issues with them.
Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro Precision Rifle, 16.0" - This rifle seemed litterally perfect until I noticed its weight. Product Weight 11.4 lbs
Sig Cross 308 - Again a seems liek this is a no brainer BUT, the reports of it being very picky with ammo has made me EXTREAMLY weary... I dont like $2500 gambles.
Rem SPS tac AAC 16" barrel - budget friendly, will need to buy some parts. Chassis and trigger group.
Remington 700 Police LTR, 20.00" Fluted - again, will have to get a cheek piece or chassis.
Tikka T3X Compact - Not threaded, need cheek piece or chassis.
Tikka T3X Roughtech - barrel is "too" long. Would need cheek piece or chassis
Bergara SP 18" 308 rifle - Would need cheek piece or chassis.

The no brainer seems like the Cross but its such an accuracy gamble from reviews.
The throw money at it rifle but I wont have to do anything is the Delta 5 pro, but its heavy AF (would suck to carry BUT I mean... I could...
The budget friendly, semi custom build over time seems to be the T3X Compact, good length, weight, price, action, aftermarket support ect.

Help me out, am I missing a rifle? Should I do a custom ? Semi custom (t3X?) Should I just suck it up and eat my Wheaties on hunt days throw money at the DD?

Mossberg mvp scout 308 with a kydex cheek riser. Ticks all your boxes, can run any kinda optic you want, threaded 16” barrel, has good backup sights and feeds from common ar10 *and* m14 mags. 7pounds, moa at 100 yards with good factory ammo. Can buy a good optic and a crate of ammo and still be in your budget.
