All-New: Type 81M

Bent rifles have been blown out of proportion to the extreme imo. People act like they dont work or something
(maybe in the most extreme cases they dont but not that im aware of) I had one for the longest time and didnt even realize it. Was just as accurate as any other t81 i owned, as the sights are attached to the barrel itself and zeroed the "bend" has no effect on seemingly anything other than aesthetics for the most anal retentive people. Again i didn't even notice the bend, as most never would unless specifically hunting for it. Never bothered me but to each their own. For this price and for a rifle ive never even heard of anyone having a stoppage with bent or no, it's still an amazing deal any way you slice it.

this is 100% true, most "bent barrels" arnt actually bent because people are just doing visual inspections. Its usually a slightly off center stock, canted sites, or loose dust cover.

unfortunately Canadian gun owners seem to be more interested in drawing straight lines through their guns in Microsoft paint instead of actually using their guns. thats why people will complain about the type 81 having minor cosmetic issues but then think the ar180 garbage rods are acceptable guns when most cant get through 100 rounds without a malfunction and in a lot of cases, literally eating itself alive within the 1k round mark. Everyone i know with a 180 has had to send it into warranty atleast once

as to the windage comments by others, this is not a precision rifle, its not accurate or percice enough for you to even be able to realize this theoretical issue.

My buddy owns one of the original bent ones he bought for 500$ off some fool who thought the gun wasnt functional because of the bend. ive shot that thing out to 400m with his PSO scope on it and there are no windage issues. even if there were, its a 4MOA gun at best so you would only be able to realize it in a lab setting.

I wish Canadians one day will get some proper russian AK's so we can realize that alll the type 81 "issues" exist in the AK as well. I spent some time in eastern europe for work and shot a lot of AKs and they often look like they have bent barrels but function totally fine. When i pointed it out to the owner the response was "its not a sniper rifle, why does it matter" and thats a damn good point that i havent heard a good counter argument either than "i have OCD and it needs to be STRAIGHT". ok go buy an ar180 then and draw lines through it all day in microsoft paint, leave the type 81s for people who shoot their guns and care about reliability more than trivial cosmetic issues.

blown out of proportion? really? well, consider yourself lucky. i would've liked to offered you a trade. like others said my optic would max out even with shims but no hassle returning it to TI.

Yes, blown out of proportion. I don't know why people think this means "none had issues whatsoever", simply the whole thing was made out to be more common and worse than it was, by far, as TI said the problem effected .05% of rifles, and if you bought one from them they replaced it if it actually had the issue. The fact its still being kvetched about posts after TI gave the actual numbers is the definition of something being blown out of proportion lol.

Knowing what a problem it would be to zero an optic on a bent rifle, I never would have went down the path with that particular rifle.

This will be my seventh t81 coming soon. Only one has been bent out of all I’ve owned. So I agree that the problem is over inflated.

Looking down the barrel with the bent rifle disassembled, I can see about one half of the rear trunnion cleaning hole (if that’s what it’s called). It’s not out of alignment at just the front trunnion but the whole receiver has a gentle curve. Putting on the Master Mount was a bear of a job, and it will never sit flush with a curved receiver.

Is it in spec? Probably. Still sucks a bit tho.

I’m not trashing TI, as I’ve been one of their BIGGEST customers over the years.

Ordered March 12, evening
CFP March 15's early morning
Still "Order Processing" on my T.I account

Not shipped yet. Anyone have information on what their order # is and progression at this point? I know they're swamped, just wondering how close I am to getting it shipped. Going to the GTA, could have picked er' up (but I believe that's not possible after reading their site). Guess I'll just be patient even while I see a ton of people already flipping them.

Did you...ask them to? Lol

Yes.

Mine didn’t measure > .6mm on the hammer. So it wasn’t warranted. Once I found out it was in spec I felt less bothered by it.

I didn’t anticipate mounting an optic plate on the side of a curved receiver because there had been no plates available at the time of purchase.

When I mounted an optic plate, just months ago, the curved receiver was, and continues to be, very much a problem.

It was difficult to get the threads started and the mount will either sit flat (against the receiver) at the front, or flat at the back, but not both.

Having it sit flush at the front of the mount and receiver was the only route because flush at the back meant I ran out of windage to zero a dot.

I’ll add that this was the first of seven t81’s I’ve bought - so I liked the bent one enough to persevere with the platform, and for that I’m grateful because I’ve got some really nice rifles out of it. Especially the LMG, and this model is based off that model. Thus, I cautiously anticipate the same QC.

I received my underfolder and it is bang on straight, very happy with it.

Also, I weighed it in comparison to an SA with an empty magazine in each rifle.

T81M Underfolder with empty magazine attached, slant comp and sling: 8.8 LBS
T81SA Fixed with empty magazine attached, and sling: 7.8 LBS

Seems to be accurate I think. There is for sure some weight difference in pointability compared to the SA as well as just an overall difference in components, just compare the sight blocks, barrel, handguards, etc it all adds up.

Can someone please tell me, is the Type 81 5/5 rnd mag actually a pinned 10 rnd mag? It appears to be, so I'm confused why it's not labelled as a 5/10 rnd mag.

Just pulled one out to check.

It’s got a pin about 3/4 the way down. I’d say it’s a pinned 10, unless they make an oddball 8 round mag or something.

That's quite far off from what TI said. They said it was only around 100g difference in weight.

I wonder how much of that weight difference comes from the underfolder being all steel. I have an original fixed T81 SA I'll weigh when my T81M fixed stock arrives for a more apples to apples comparison.

It's probably 100g in difference between the barrel weights. Overall there are larger components that all add up. I figure the underfolder stock with mounting accessories is probably heavier than the wood stock, the handguards and mounts are bigger, the barrel obviously the front sight block and compensator etc.
