My Maverick 88 with Spas12 body kit

Cool project. Seeing threads like this really make me want to get a 3d printer, see if CAD is still as intuitive as I found it 20 years ago...

I was able to pick up changing and modifying .stl files very fast with YouTube and just messing around. I've been using meshmixer. I haven't designed anything right from scratch. Many years I've done it, but too long ago to remember anything. But with 3d scanners and so many files available online, the options are still endless with some determination, time and money. Idk what I'll do with my printer once the project is done. Another tool in the tool chest is the way I look at it.

This is the second attempt to print the folding stock. Was a 20hr print. First one failed somewhere in the 85% area, the piece fell off my printer😔. This second attempt I wasn't home for when it finished, and looks like she got a little too hot and kinda melted the tip. I'm going to see if I can salvage it by sanding it down and using some jbweld or even the same nylon filiment to build it back up. That being said, the part "should" be usable.View attachment 830275View attachment 830276View attachment 830277
Really Kool! The thing I was wondering straight away, was the stock..if she'll hold up.Āæ. Many - MANY years ago, I had a SPAS, I believe SPA 15? It was not the prohibited one, & was a pump only SG, but it has the same kool folding stock. I've seen someone on here with one, doing a similar thing as you. Pretty sure those are pretty hard to come by now-a-days. Nice Work!

I seen a heatshield hit ebay, but it was 1500$ 😬 and I wasn't about to spend that especially when it would have to be cut up. If orginal parts were around and cheap it would have been so much faster to just modify those.

The Spas 12 is one of the most egregious examples of how idiotic, nonsensical and based-on-feelings our gun laws are. Pump shotguns are totally legal, semi-auto shotguns are totally legal, but a pump/semi that looks scary because hollywood? BANNED.

The other most egregious example is the SVD Dragunov - only ever made as a semi auto, in a different caliber than an AK, designed by a completely different dude than the AK, using a completely different operating system than an AK, in a totally different caliber that predates the AK by like 100 years, with zero interchangeable parts with an AK - banned as an "AK Variant."

The absolute b*******tery that went into that decision is mind boggling.

Anywho, just had to rant, back onto this lovely topic bound to make liberals cry. :)

awesome job. Looks very realistic.
for someone just dipping their toe in 3D printing you're doing great.
I have a PRUSA MK4 and I use Fusion360 for my cad program.
I've never used CAD before so I can't compare it to any other programs but learning the basics wasn't hard.
You can get a "personal" version for free.
For the record. I got to shoot a spas in the US. Being able to switch from semi to pump was fun but I wasn't very impressed with the build quality of it.

After a ton of work in the shop, I made the folding stock from 2" square tube 3/16" thick. Feels way safer and durable then the 3d printed one. Definitely a heavy beast though. Maybe a 3d printed one would hold up, but I didn't really want to find out. I thought about 1/8" but I wasn't sure about the flexing of the arms being that it's just mild steel and no spring steel or hardened.

No bead rolling on the stock like the original. I don't have that capability. I thought about making a faux bead with some half round plastic and adding it, but I feel this looks pretty clean as is.

I used these stainless steel indexing pins for the folding butt and stock. I think they are pretty slick.

The original spas12 uses the front sight to lock the folding stock or the grip assembly depending which version. With the construction of the heatshield and grip, and the way they are secured, there's no way I could have done this and had it been durable. Using the grip was my other option. But, I printed a new grip assembly in 1 piece, hoping that would be even more strong and less hardware, but removing the capability of this type of securement. I tried to find or design some sort of double ended pogo pin that was retractable to no avail. I ended up using a indexing pin to release the stock, and a picatinny sling attachment to secure it folded. Seems to work great with some mods. I had to install and modify a picatinny accessory and it sits a little higher then normal.

I still have some minor fitment and securing to do, but this should actually be shootable now.

I still need to remake the action slide arms out of steel, and possibly the action slide itself, to give me 1000% confidence.

The grip is 1 piece printed nylon, 20% infill. Around the bosses and mating face to the reciever I increased the perimeters to hopefully translate into strength.

The hook is 1/2" steel bar, that installs and swivels identical to the original. I bent it with a press, vice and box wrench to get what I think it something close enough to mirror the original. No "F" on the bottom though. I tried printing one, but just wouldn't come out fine enough for me.

The sight is still visible with the picatinny rail and sling attachment, but I may down the road add a cantilever picatinny rail to the aft end so that a red dot sight could be added to sit aft of the rail as not to impose on the folding stock when it's moving. Anything wide and long would make contact when the stock is being folded.

I 100% agree with you but idk why you folks think it's a solely liberal thing. Magazine limits were enacted by the conservatives of the time back in the 90s. The "scary" looking guns and the "guns of our enemies" ban were started by conservatives of the time and the rest of it by the succeeding liberals, but it was pretty much a bipartisan thing. But not only that but like the basis of all the firearms program we are stuck with today is once again, you guessed it ,because of the conservatives of the time in response to Poly.

Yeah the recent bans were made by Liberals but holy #### guys, stop thinking conservatives are this magical entity that will save us. Most conservatives are clearly FUDDs when it comes to guns. I say it over and over, everyone is scared of guns in Canada. The most we have is people who support hunters, that's it.

It's like every 10 years most Canadians reset their memory and forget the past governments.

And I'm not saying this to support liberals at the moment hahah, #### them and the ban they did that did nothing to help the issue and public safety, I am certainly voting them out. It's just I see this mentality over and over on this forum and I feel people aren't aware about the history of our firearm laws. We don't live in the US folks.

Beautiful work, the spas12 is one of the large list of guns banned before I was born that I wish I could get, if you do sell kits put me down for one
Thanks. I'm not sure if I could actually sell much of a kit. The only thing 3d printed now at this point is the forgrip, heatshield, and grip.

The folding stock, butt, and action slide is all steel.

I finished making the action slide and arms today. The arms are 12g stainless steel. The rest is mild steel. I wasn't sure what the original arms were, so I went this route. I'm sure they'll hold up for a long time. Used a small roll pin to keep them in place, hopefully it will be fine, I know roll pins are pretty strong. I'll have to weigh the gun when it's back and all assembled, she's definitely gained a few pounds lol.

I'm a bit nervous for the recoil. The stock butt has padding and I still had a sore shoulder. This being all steel is making me question things lol. Im hoping the added mass will absorb the recoil, vs thowing that mass into the shoulder. I'll find out the answer to that after the first shot lol.

This is one of the coolest mods I’ve seen in a while.

Was going to do this to my Hatsan semi and 3D print the forend shroud.

Actually got to handle and shoot a genuine SPAS-12 not long ago and was HUGELY disappointed with how not intuitive it is lol. But the nostalgia still makes it the coolest.

Love what you did

Thanks.

In hind sight I think doing this mod to a semi would have been way easier than a pump. Wouldn't have to worry about the action slide and arms. Everything's fixed in place vs sliding and moving. I've heard multiple times that the spas is a terrible shotgun. Mine I don't think will be any lighter though.

Well, she's all assembled! Well, missing the small sling attachment at the grip. But everything else is done! Seems to cycle fine and smooth.

She weight 12lbs according to my scale. She's heavy lol. Factory version of my 88 is 6.5lbs according to the website.

I'm hoping my next post will be a video and how she preforms.

If I ever get welding capability for aluminum, that would be nice to bring the weight down, but it will be a range toy that sits in a safe, so long as it works I'll be happy for now lol. Wife is already telling me I spent too much time for a gun I shoot once a year lol.
