Gun Engraving

In regard to what I posted, entirely done by hand ,Brian i believe may use a pneumatic, but Paul does not
Using a pneumatic engraver IS “by hand”, not unlike comparing an air nailer to a hammer. MANY top name engravers learned the hammer/chisel them switched to pneumatic tools to save time, again, not unlike a framer or roofer switching to an air nailer.

This week's interesting fence...

Sorry for my repeated pics of the same gun but the more I study it up close the more I see and am completely in awe of the craftsmanship that could be attained on American factory guns almost 100 years ago. It may not be as artistic as others both past and present, especially in comparison to european "best guns" but it is so cool to look at up close, especially in good clear enlarged photos where you can see the imperfections as well as the very fine details the engraver applied you may not necessarily pick up with the bare eye. This has never had the engraving retouched and it has survived quite nicely given the metal surfaces have been refinished. I've owned alot of guns over the years and to date this has been and is my all time favorite.

Here be a superb, Top-Tier level Parker VHE 28 ga that's fer sale currently. An absolute beauty.
Parker 28ga/26" Custom Engraved by Winston Churchill for sale

Here's a bio on the master engraver of that Parker.
Winston Gordon Churchill, 1939-2023 - Gray's Sporting Journal
This gun is for sale on Jaqua's website.
Winston Churchill is one of the finest engravers, ever. And, it is stocked by Jerry Fisher who is a renown stockmaker. Doesn't get much better.

This a Charles Daly single barrel trap gun made in the early 1900's. The gun was made by the well known Prussian gunsmith, H A Lindner.
I'm not sure what grade this gun is---certainly not entry level, but not the top grade either. the gun is owned by a fellow gun nut who had it at the Calgary Easter gun show. In fact, he asked to put it at my table as his was over flowing.
The engraving is extremely well done. Enjoy!

Bill, I’ll follow up in a bit with the grade.

It's a Model 265 Diamond Quality. Catalogued between 1912 and 1915. They were most likely available a bit before that but that's when they showed up in the catalogue. And, referencing our earlier conversation, those date fit with the serial number

A little off topic, but (easier to ask the question then buying a gun just to satisfy my curiosity)...
- On that Prussian Daly, are the side plates removable to give access to the mechanism without removing the stock ? Like boxlock wanting to be a sidelock ?

And since this is a picture thread... same gun, different grade of engraving

Not a sideplate, just a bolster. These Daly's use a modified A&D design. The biggest difference is an elongation of the action.
