Browning BLR in ROUGH shape.

So I took the darn thing apart today... I see why people say not to.

I'm glad I did, there was literal mud inside of this POS. Wtf. Guy must of used it as a paddle in the marsh.

What's crazy to me is that they dont have timing marks on the spur gears... would help with assembly, even at the factory.

I will try to figure that out so its easier in the future to clean.

I stuck the bore scope in to try to see how the barrel is threaded into the extension, but still have no idea.

I'm definitely worried about the bore picking up a lot of copper and creating higher pressures after 20 rounds.
Do yourself a favor and mark them when you're disassembling. Like timing gear marks. Once it's cleaned and lubed and back together try shooting it. You may be surprised. - dan

That is a alloy receiver BLR and has been taken apart 100 times , you can tell by the timing gear screws and the damage to the alloy around the hammer, my advice, and i own many blr guns, is sell it and dont put a dime into it, look for a nice 358 if you want a short bear gun or buy an 81-94 blr in 7mm 08 (the years with the steel receivers) which will run you $1200 to $1500 depending on how nice it is
Agreed. Can check if shoots as is, in which case he can clean it up and use it but I wouldn't spend money rebarreling. Alloy receiver is already beat up and that's hard to come back from. The screws are messed up and somebody has been inside "tinkering".

Personally, I'd just give it a good clean up & test fire as is.

If it turned out well, then just keep it as a 'truck gun'.

NAA.

Alright, so I shot it.

Loaded speer 145 hot cor
And speer 145 grand slam.
Both shot identical at 100 yards.

139 hornady sst. Pressure signs at almost lowest load. So definitely not shooting these.

The speers felt very low recoil. I loaded just one load for each bullet. So I may load a few diferent loads up to max with the hotcors as they are cheap.

I got 2600fps out of the 20 inch barrel. So nothing crazy.

I would say both 5 shot groups with the speers were about 3 inches at 100 yards. Same impact point. I need to measure and take pictures still. Sorry!

I would like to be able to shoot 200 yards. With it currently, I wouldn't shoot past maybe 120.

Best 7mm-08 groups I ever got were with Hornady 139 gr flat base interlocks, over H414 powder. - dan

In previous posts I explain that this will cost me next to nothing. If I choose 7mm08 AI, it will cost me nothing.

If I choose to change calibers, I would need a take off barrel and reamer potentially depending on the make of barrel.

Also the action, I will blast and cerakote. Again no cost, as I have everything to do it.

I have two 7mm-08's (a Rem 788 carbine and a Rem 700 varmint special), as well as a 7mm-08 AI built on a Rem 600. It's a great cartridge, in either version. - dan

I am looking forward to see pictures of your restauration in progress.

It is unbelievable, how many highly talented people on this site, all I can do is admire the the great work, while sitting on my two left hands.

one easy step to improving that accuracy may be a simple crown touch-up? the most critical part of a barrel in regard to maintaining accuracy
of any barrel they say. What could go possibly wrong  :ROFLMAO:

Barrel is off. Zero issues. Unscrew like any other barrel...

From the ejection port you can see the insert( barrel extension) so I was trying to think of something to use as an internal action wrench.

I just left the gun fully assembled. Bolt home. Made a barrel clamp sleeve for my existing makeshift barrel vise, and I made an external action clamp as well. I put heat to the barrel, as browning loves their threadlocker, and a small love tap on the barrel vise, and she came right off.

Looking through the bore after 16 rounds, the amount of copper built up is ridiculous. The only way I can think of that the bore got so messed up, is that someone left some sort of cleaning chemical in it too long. Because there was no copper on my initial inspection.

So I am definitely re-barreling this thing.

I have a 7mm08 remington take-off that I can modify to make a BLR barrel. But I only have a 7mm-08 AI reamer. (I have to push the chamber forward as the remington tenon is too long).

So far, it's between a 7mm-08 AI, (Cost nothing extra)
.358 Winchester
Or .338 Federal.

Any other calibers I should consider?

Also, I may as well go full tilt into this now that I'm not keeping the original barrel... so I may start another thread when I start the actual project....

I am going to make a video on taking the barrel off, and also one for timing the action. The guy on YouTube that has "the best" blr video, is a moron. I had to watch the video on mute and read the sub titles. Its 58 minutes long, and about 8 minutes of it are the actual content of the title.
