BC really tearing up old logging roads

Didn't take long for the propaganda to show up. Many of us on here have seen a half century of poor forestry management practices that have come back to haunt us now. As per some other posters-the entire program is about control and keeping people out of the woods, not access.
There is a location not far from me that has a small patch of forest that is "being managed" by a specific "interest group". It actually looks pretty good. Lots of signage promoting the project. The same interest group logs further up the drainage route, and the areas are a mess , primed and waiting for the next lightning strike. ymmv.

They are following the rules set out eons ago. No forestry, no forestry road.

Google and you will be enlightened

The B.C. Ministry of Forests regulates road deactivation and Ravi Parmar (who's 31 years old and has Zero experience with anything forestry related) is the man appointed by David Eby to be B.C.'s Minister of Forests.
Might come as a shock to some, but forest companies/contractors don't wander out in the bush and spend vast sums of money and time deactivating roads so they can "conceal the damage".
They do as they're told by The Ministry.
As community destroying as it would be, sometimes i feel forestry/heavy industry should just close up shop here in B.C. for a decade. All the tree huggers and self-described 'environmentalists' can get a real taste of an economy minus it's economic engine. Then, all the retired, indexed-pension folks can enjoy fighting over access with natives.
I mean, screw young families and the working class right? Who needs them?
We need a well regulated industry, not the complete desolation of thousands upon thousands of hectares with no one repairing the damage.

Our region looks more like a war zone.

Several years ago, the NDP put the onus on the companies/corporations to replant and not log riparian areas.

One quick drive will soon show that they've mostly just razed the forest, then moved on to another forest, completely ignoring their responibility to reclaim the area and replant.

There are vast areas in our region that were cut over a decade ago, and not one seedling has been replanted.

I'm not against "responsible" logging or industry.

The logging industry in BC is cutting it's own throat. You say they should pull out for ten years. Well don't hold your breath because it's already happening, and it's going to take a long time to recover those long gone forests, ponds, small lakes, and streams that were wiped off the face of the earth with irresponsible forestry practices.

The real irony is that they won't be able to access the natural fires to put them out. Works both ways. Stupid.
Funny enough, BCWFS contacted us about firing in a couple fire-break lines through our property this season. It amounts to some 25 or so truck loads of saleable timber.

FWIW, Riley Creek Fire. A fire that went essentially nowhere, until a month after it was lit off, and turned into a poo-show as a result. Just over the ridge from me. I called it in less than ten minutes after the lightning strike.

Am REALLY not impressed with the BCWFS, as I have strong opinions, about whether their main policy manual was written by retards, or is being read by retards ! Maybe both.

All the folks I have met at ground level, are f*cking Rock Stars!, IMO, and too many of them have expressed that they thought that BCWFS was less interested in putting fires out than 'managing' them

This is all about control with our current corrupt & tyrannical NDP Government. They do not want BC tax payers to have access to any crown land.

No camping, means no fires, no access means no hunting and firearms will no longer be needed in their twisted minds....:(

BC NDP idiots are the worst wildlife managers in Canada..........

I noticed the same road deactivation yesterday in areas that were accessible for over 30 years. Not anymore I'm afraid.

Soon there will be no crown left in BC to access period. There won't be much crown land left after EBY is done giving the province away to the indigenous folks, and what is left will be deactivated to everyone......:(

Make no mistake, this is by design, it's all about control.....:(
Well the Indians are taking over BC ! The NDP and the Liberals are giving it All to them 🤬

So which is it? ..."a well regulated industry" with an NDP Forestry Minister for 20 of the last 35 years 'or' "complete desolation", a "war zone" and "wiped off the face of the earth"?
I get it, logging isn't pretty, but this is a hyperbolic reaction to what is widely regarded as the most regulated and tightly managed forest industry on planet earth.

Loggers on public lands do not get to choose: where they will cut, the density of harvest, where the boundaries are laid out, what areas are classed as riparian (etc.) management zones, where and how the roads/bridges will be built, what the road deactivation standards are, what the replanting requirements will be and the timelines involved, etc.

Yes the forest takes time to recover, but recover it will. Just maybe not in the timeline that you approve of.
If it's as bad as you say, you should be able to take, "One quick drive" and document all these contraventions to the FRPA/FPPR not to mention the Fisheries Act and bring those responsible to justice.

Some people are resistant to change and some people blame those who don't make the rules, rather than holding their governing authorities to account when they see/experience something they don't like.
I don't hate cops because part of their mandate is enforcing The Firearms Act, but i sure as heck am not fond of whiney Canadians with a long history of voting for shytty politicians who promise 'safety' and 'change'.

Now David Eby and the NDP, are handing the Province over to the "stewards of the land" and If you're not fond of forest practices accountability now...you're in for a rough ride.

Without a forestry sector, there are no forestry roads.

Tree huggers would rather get building materials from actual environmental damaging sources.

Trees grow back.
Depends on how much damage was done during the harvest. Drain off all the water, nothing grows back.

Blitzkrieg logging may be profitable, but it's like cutting your own throats to put your children into poverty.

They may not get to choose where they cut, but there is a responsibility to do it properly. Riparian areas are off limits, but a lot of blind eyes are being turned so the damage can't be seen by the public.

Wiping out entire ecosystems is a special kind of stupid. IMHO.

In Ontario generally the logging company will just take out their bridge for the next spot or pull out the culvert to reuse elsewhere. They aren't doing it to prevent people from using it, just not giving the government a free bridge. It gets moved to the next creek or river at the next block and a small section will get tore up just so no one accidently drives into a river. Spending money to tear up roads intentionally does not make a lot of sense to me even if the wood has been harvested and no harvest is planned for 40+ years.

They are monitored, on the ground, by fixed-wing/rotary aircraft, satellite and more recently drone fly-overs.
Riparian zones are regulated, rather than "off limits".
There are 6 different stream classifications under the FPPR, 4 different lake classifications and 5 different wetland classifications.

Is it possible that Ministry of Forests and DFO officers are turning a "blind eye" to "wiping out entire ecosystems"? Seems unlikely, but I suppose anything's possible.
If you can find out who these officers are let me know, as there may be some unexercised moonlighting opportunities for them :)

I do take exception to restricting public access, including extreme road deactivation. Pulling culverts and cross-ditching is one thing, but pulling bridges and erecting gates to deny access to the general public because they may 'misbehave' out there, just sounds like an excuse for poor back-country management/monitoring/enforcement and a failed justice system (There are contractors who have suffered vandalism, including total machine loss who probably wouldn't agree with me here).

Went to the place I've been hunting ever year for the past 6 years and all the roads into the old cut blocks have been freshly deactivated. Not the old style deactivations with small ditches across the road or maybe a berm across, we are talking using Rippers on the back of bulldozers going down the lengths of the road for at least 100-200m. Making it very hard for people with disabilities to get into these spots as you can no longer drive into them. They just started doing this earlier this year.
They don’t want people to be able to access lands to be able to hunt and fish for self sustenance…

Meanwhile Quebec hates the idea of cutting forestry roads when no longer needed, like if they run to clear-cuts. So odd how populations keep dropping!

Repel 1997. Beazley.

Welcome to my world.
90 % plus of the areas we used to hunt (and fish) have been gated on the Island.
A lot of that is public land.
Many publicly stocked lakes access now denied.

The whole thing is a CLUSTER!
Does this stem from indigenous land claims of said lands? Seems government doing backroom deals with indigenous and giving them crown land as well as giving them rights over private property. This is exactly what B.C. NDP GOVERNMENT is doing and plans to continue doing. Forcing people out of parks and stopping access to crown lands for recreational use , hunting and fishing …

In BC many mainline FSR’s would not connect to other Mainlines. Now they are often connected and the branches off these mains and the blocks they harvest are often within sight of blocks and branches from other mains. Combined with the beetle harvest and recent fires and the monoculture of replacement stands and there’s getting to be less and less cover and habitat for game.

There are legitimate direct links between road and traffic density and game numbers and population health.

Everyone is primed and ready to jump on wolves, natives and govt conspiracy theories and NWO agendas but very few are willing to admit or accept that we’ve F’d things pretty hard and there’s an ever increasing demand on resources.

Perhaps to some extent.

I do believe a lot of it is being based on keeping the utter destruction of the back-country by Mosaic et al out of the public view.
I have personally seen grievous deviations from environmental stands (Legislated) FAR too many times to think otherwise.
A fly over of the Island is incredibly disturbing in that regard.
Moonscaped - including vast areas of cutting the entire riparian zone to water's edge (Nahmint Lake is a prime example thereof).
Frigging DISGUSTING!

Who or what is MOSAIC

Who or what is MOSAIC

Mosaic Forest Management was formed in 2018 when the operations of two historic coastal British Columbia timber companies—TimberWest and Island Timberlands.

Mosaic is 100% Canadian-owned by major public service pension investment managers, specifically the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). BC owns the majority.

So in effect, it is the Province itself creating these issues.
