As a new to the forum member, I am wondering what the recommendations are with regard to a 9mm. While there are myriad models of 9mm handguns, I am fairly confident that the three amigos of 9mm are the top dogs in the market (pls feel free to recommend others).

On that note...let 'er rip!

Don't forget the STI SP6. A newbie but certain to be a winner.

However, the big question is what do you need it for, and what type of gun do you want?

The handguns with barrels over 5" seem to be popular in competition and hunting only - that's why G17 is more popular than G34.

CZ and various clones are good guns too.

I would like a handgun for range shooting. Accuracy is what I'm after overall. Not planning on wading through swaps, trekking through deserts nor conquering arctic frontiers (YET :D) so I don't care much for all that jazz. Just a firearm that will deliver for years to come.

OK, are you interested in action shooting, or just old fashioned target shooting?

Glocks and M&P's are popular, work well, and for those that find the grip appealing, are a good fit. The downside is the triggers on them are mushy and on the heavy side. They are also lighter than steel framed guns so may seem to kick more. Both are popular in IPSC Production.

Sigs are aluminum framed, so they tend to weigh very slightly more than plastic. They have a decocker only safety, so every first shot in competition will be double action, even when that isn't a requirement. The trigger in double action is heavier and longer than the Glock/M&P, but the single action pull is lighter and more crisp.

The CZ and GP6 have a frame mounted safety so in competition they can be carried cocked and locked, or hammer down safety off as required. The double and single action triggers are decent. The CZ SP01 is dominating IPSC Production.

For now I am interested in good old fashioned target shooting.

I haven't heard anything about the CZ line until I joined this forum and I have to say I'm intrigued. What are the costs vis a vis the Glocks? Where can they be purchased in BC? Is there anybody that owns one that would allow me to go to the range with them to try it out? :D

Truth be told the more I read the more I am inclined to go Glock but since I have yet to buy one I am still a free agent!

Thanks for your thorough feedback thus far all, I love CGN!

The CZ would be a more "enjoyable" gun than the Glock. Its a good solid design and nice one to start with.

Sig 229 or 226. But the beast advice I can give you is go to a range with a store and try out a variety of pistols. Also, why 9mm? Don't rule out .40 cal.

Take a hard look at the CZ85 Combat. Gun arguably has more mechanical accuracy than either the Glock or M&P, is a solid design that has been tested over a long period of time. Out of the box has a better trigger than the polymer guns IMHO. The gun would serve you well in either IDPA or IPSC if you decide to shoot either sport. Just replace the mainspring for a lighter trigger pull. with a 13#/15# spring and you are good to go.

The CZ's and the Tanfoglio clone have the best grip of any I have tried.

2nd choice would be the Browing HP. Downside it is SA and usually requires a trigger job. Upside, until the CZ 75B and it's iterations came along, the HP defined what a handgun grip should be. Some feel the model still does. Reliable and tested.

Take Care

Bob
