597 VTR - mini review + pics.

My 597 used to FTF/FTE 50%+ of the time. I went through 300 rounds on saturday with not ONE hiccup. I've sorted a few other 597's, its not a huge deal.

With a bit of work, I believe they can be more/just as reliable then a 10/22.

Adding a valquartsen trigger and extractor is a winning combonation with any rimfire semi, be it a 10/22 or a 597 (regardless of what body kit its wearing)

Fbimagery, they're a fun gun, I hope you have better luck with yours.

I have yet to get it to fire more than three in a row....Mine must be a bolt action.
It was sent off today Rush Delivery for repair.
I hope to see it again soon....You KNOW that this story is not over yet.

It may not be the end of the world...but seriously....a Brand New in the Box reject?...where the heck was QC or QA ?...on lunch?

Hey fbimagery,

Sorry to see the extreme issue you are having with your rifle. I really hope that it is not indicative of the general quality of these fun guns. Hope you get it back soon and the issues are resolved and you get a fine working rifle.

I'm hoping to go to the range tomorrow after work and sight that scope in. I've put about 500 rounds down the pipe so far, and the only ammo the action really loves is the Dynapoints. I hope that the barrel loves it as much when shooting at 50 yards and trying to get good tight groups.

Well I figured I should sound off my big mouth on this since this topic as it's way off topic any way.
:bangHead:
K, at the back of every 597 there are two hex set screw's for the sole purpose of setting tension to the guide rod. If you crank these two tight it won't matter what ammo you have cuz it won't cycle worth a dam. Now what I do is back them out until they are almost flush with the receiver and slowly tighten them up until I fell light resistance when using my pinky finger to pull the charging handel.
Now, as for this specific rifle combo I am loving it! And will post pics once I have converted it to look like an MP5.

I finally got around to sending some rounds down the pipe last night. From a total of about 150 rounds I only had issues with 3. 2 were FTE and one FTF with the "better ammo". I found that Federal Gold Medal worked best, no issue with them at all. Federal Champion were the 2 FTE's. The plain old yellow box Remington was the FTE, otherwise out of 50 rounds that shot well as well. The cheapy Wildcat and Thunderbolt ammo wouldn't even load/feed what so ever and I couldn't even get a single shot of that in.

Overall I am happy with the VTR. Smooth firing, good groups once I got the scope sighted in and above all it looks great. The mags were pretty tight like others have said and I could only get 8 rounds in. I think the higher velocity the better for this rifle.
Hopefully I'll continue to have good luck with this rifle.

Today I took the VTR in my hand :

good looking but damn the magazine look so cheap !! :(

it's heavy and colors on it don't match, instead I think the 10/22 will be my choice :p

if someone is interest here in quebec, Sail Baron (Beloeil) have a few in stock (389,00$)

Just got my Rem 597 VTR out to the bush yesteray. I put about 300 rounds through it and the following is the results:
Federal 36 grn - no FTF/FTE nothing, outstanding
CCI Standard velocity 40 grn outstanding no FTF FTE
Blazer...sucked ass

I couldnt get my scope on because of an issue withthe rings but as for function and operation...excellent. I bought two 30 round mags from cabelas and they functioned great, one locks the bolt back on last round the other does not, no big deal.

300 rounds and everything was outstanding. I am very happy with the rifle, the balance is good, comfortable to shoot and fits me perfect. A little big for my son (9) but he was having a blast. I plan on going out again today and putting another 500 through it.

As far as I am concerned, great rifle so far. Once I get my rings sorted out I'll be mounting my Bushnell dusk till dawn 3-9 scope and see how the various rounds hit the paper.

I'm going to try some adjustments to see if I can get it to cycle better with more ammo than just the Dynapoints (which don't pattern well) and the minimags (which pattern well but cost too much to shoot as much as I do). But I'm having a problem; I can't get get the side plates off. According to the docs I should be able to use a 3/32" Allen Wrench, but none of my Allen keys quite fit them. I've tried several different sets of imp. sized sets and it's a no-go.

Did any of you guys get an Allen Wrench (key) with your M597? If not, could you guys see if any standard imperial or even metric Allen wrenches fit with your 597 VTR please?

Thanks guys.

Took mine out yesterday did not even clean it except for the barrel at least 300 through the pipe. I tried many different brands of ammo. I is ammo sensitive Federal Game shock and CCI stingers 0 issues. The only problem that I have with mine was the Mag I found it tight at first and failed to feed the ammo a little oil and cleaning and then it worked fine. I can only put 8 rds in mine. I have Bushnell holo site on mine. I love the gun. Feels great. Shoots really well able to hit coke cans at 50 yards standing 0 support that’s go enough for me. For 386.00 cdn I’m very happy with mine

Sounds like an expensive eater, but....if you've a rifle you like :), and can actually hit things with :D, that's no small thing!

I just got the last one at Le Baron in Montreal for 386.00. Can't wait to try it out this weekend.

Called Lebaron Montreal today - they said they don`t have any, and that they never had any... maybe next year

something doesnt add up

Sure wish I could find one at that price...

People often get confused between 'LeBaron' and 'Sail Baron' aka 'Baron Sports'

I got mine from Baron, Pointe-Claire. ###.sailbaron.com replace ### with www
