Figured I'd share my build as it is almost out of the concept stage... I wanted to be able to plink with an enfield without the expense or headache of factory/reloads... 7.62x39 seemed like the ideal answer with there .311 bullets and close cartridge profile to the front 2/3rds of the .303 brit.

After making my first centerfire reamer...

I was able to achieve this... ( It was a chopped sportster prior to my bubba-ing so go easy on me :p )

Yes, I know the extractor spring is missing, I broke it dinking around with it at the range trying to get a better grip on some stuck case rims... It has been replaced.

I always wanted a No5... :)

Apart from occasional hard extraction and anemic ejection it seems to be a success. My 4" groups with mil-surp are nothing to be proud of but at the cost of the ammo I can afford to spray. :D

Flame suit on!

Well, no flaming here (seldom my thing), I have to say it is an interesting project. And thanks for posting the pics. The "faux-mag" or mag adapter (or whatever, not sure how to describe!) is weird, maybe you'll start a fashion trend :D How many rounds in there?

I wouldn't start a commercial operation but giving it a try at the range... sure :p

Good for you! If you had done this to a fine full wood Lee, I would lead the lynch mob, but seeing as she was cut- well done! Wouldn't mind something like that myself. I've read that some mosin nagants in Vietnam were in x39, love to find one!

Thats a pretty sweet set up. I was gonna recommend using a CZ-858 mag, but then i remembered it would still be required to have five round. how many round fit in the mag?

It's a 12ish round single stack mag at the moment...It depends If I want to cram in a 13th round and weaken my already rickety homemade spring. I tried making a double stack insert for the .303 mag but the feeding was too erratic to be reliable. As is I have to pace the bolt just right for 99% reliable feeding (rounds will jump right out of the rifle if you are too slow closing the bolt). If I had a better commercial coil spring I could likely pack a double stack 20 round mag that tapered to a tight single stack feed lip width in the same size package.

It seemed like the simplest solution to get the single stack mag I had already made as a test of concept to function in the gun without the complexity of a mag adapter or altering the hardware of the gun (apart from the bolt head and barrel nothing else has been altered).

Ok I get the mag conversion, SKS welded into a Enfeild mag body.

What did you do to rechamber as the 7.62x39 is shorter?

Remove the barrel, cut off the extra breach end and re-thread it... actualy its a home made mag welded into a homemade enfield mag body... same as you said, just a lot slower to make :p

Good work there - neat design, and guaranteed to get the fudds up in arms:p

Glad to see someone making use of the unlimited mag capacity of bolt guns too!

I was under the impression that enfield barrels generally didn't have enough meat on them to set them that far back. IE - you'd have a gap under the reciever ring where the barrel was smaller than the ID of the reciever ring.

Also, why not make double stack? Just didn't plan at the time? In my opinion they're easier to make than single stack mags in some ways.
