Firearms restrictions being proposed in Alberta.

What I've dug up in addition to what has been said. It is the Beef Producers that are proposing this. However they would like themselves exempt so that they can still hunt coyotes uninhibited. They would also like the ability to kick anyone off a maintained road allowance who does not have an MD map in their possession and permission on a surrounding property.

Nice. We're all equal, some of us are just more equal than others...

Thanks, Chuck.

And I would like all grazing leases returned to the Crown to be re-let at real world prices instead of for realtive free.

I just called SRD and got bounced to the Wildlife Management office and then to the desk of Rob Corgan (sp?), where I hit voicemail. We'll see if he calls back or not. I was asking for where to find the stakeholder proposals for the 2011 hunting regs.

Section 51 of the of the Wildlife act(you know the reg book isn't a full listing of hunting laws right?) reads as follows:

Firearms on roads
51(1) A person shall not discharge a firearm from, or cause a
projectile from a firearm to pass along or across,
(a) a highway designated as a provincial highway under the
Highways Development and Protection Act, or
(b) any other road that is paved, oiled, graded or regularly
maintained in a municipal district or prescribed area.
(2) In subsection (1), “highway” or “road” includes, as well as the
travelled portion of it, a width of land on either side of the travelled
portion, including the inner 2 sides of a divided highway, that
extends,
(a) if there is a fence parallelling the travelled portion that
separates the adjacent lands from the travelled portion, to
the fence,
(b) if there is an identifiable ditch alongside the travelled
portion and there is no fence separating the travelled
portion from the adjacent lands, to the edge of the ditch
that is further from the travelled portion, or
(c) if there is no such fence or ditch, to a distance of 20 feet
from the edge of the travelled portion,

Thanks Ormachek, I am amazed at how many people think it is okay to hop out of their truck and blaze away a pheasant of flock of huns. Most of the time they are still standing on the road surface. I usually look the other way when the shotguns come out, but the rifle guys... yikes. There is no excuse for this horse sh!t.

here in NOVA SCOTIA we have to have all firearms either encased, bolt removed and or trigger locked at all times in or on a motorized vehicle.can have a loaded clip on the seat beside a trigger lock gun all legal.we can not discharge a fire arm within 100 feet of or across the traveled portion of any highway.it is also illegal to have a firearm loaded any place you cannot legally discharge it.we cannot carry firearms on ATV's without the same things we do in a car or truck.it was not that long ago that people here were able to carry loaded rifles in their vehicles, but times are achanging like it or not.the goverments will do what they think the majority wants.

So they can have their gun unlocked. And they are going to police the roads telling people they have to get out, pulling over cars, doing inspections, too I guess? Nazi bastards!

Well...time to take off the "I LOVE ALBERTA BEEF" sticker on my bumper.

We all must write letters to the Beef Producers office, and tell them we, and our families, are going to "boycott" Alberta beef from our tables because of the gross infringement they are trying to pass upon Albertians.

Time to eat fish and chicken, pork, anything but....Alberta beef. Come'on gents lets let them know we can't be pushed around!!!!

I completely understand were you are coming from here, but we also rely on many of them for access to property to hunt. It's a fine line and I sure don't know where it is. Infuriating.

Actually, bird hunters are exempt, this is item 9 under General Regulations:

9. discharge a firearm from or cause a projectile from a firearm to pass along or across:
a) a provincial highway,
b) a road that is paved, oiled, graded or regularly maintained, unless
- the road is held under any active disposition under the Public Lands Act or under an order under the Surface Rights Act, or
- the person is hunting game birds with a shotgun under the authority of a licence.

And with due respect deadeyes, this ain't Nova Scotia, this is Alberta. There's more of Alberta S of hwy 3 than there is Nova Scotia. There's also more than one reason so many of your brethren who moved here for work aren't ever coming home. We're free, and we intend to stay that way.

For myself, I'll glady hunt in a different area. The ranchers can keep their cattle and the deer, too. This has now become a matter of wrong and right. This is ALBERTA! Not freak'n liberal Toronto for f**ks sake!

BAN ALBERTA BEEF!
BAN ALBERTA BEEF!
BAN ALBERTA BEEF!

You're not so free based on the regulations you have on hunting. We have our own bizzarre issues in NB but haven't yet gone this way. Of course we can't have loaded guns in a vehicle but that is a good thing.

They may have land - but they dont own the roads!

I am amazed at how some think they do. I was chased down by a landowner once because I was checking a wellsite on his land (the lease was to the oil company with my access permitted) and he chased me in a roar of dust down the county road. I stopped becuase I was as pissed as he was.
O ya - he was in his camo with his Cabella's cap on (this was over 15 yeas ago!) and he started screaing at me because I had my camo on and therefore i must have been hunting> Too bad I was working for my living I yelled at him.

I could not believe that he took that risk to chase me down at 100 mph and the risk that I didnt shoot him or beat the crap out of him- vigilate justice never works.

Some of the worst offenders I know for road warriors are landowners (they just dont like people to hunt on their own land!) they go to everyone else's property or road it.

bah - self serving - self righteous people always make me angry

I was just in Sundre for a EAS field work trip (University) and we were poking around on crown land, just near a field of a farmers. And he drove up to see us and started ranting and raving about how he hates city people, and he owns us because he farms.

No point in arguing just be polite.

O.k, I just got back in the house from tearing off the "I love Alberta beef" sticker from the truck and car. Now I'm sending an e-mail and a hand written letter to the beef producers.

I am starting a personal BOYCOTT of all Alberta beef!

Come'on gents, lets rip them a new #######! BOYCOTT ALBERTA BEEF!!

In addition to my letter to Mel Knight,I just sent one off to the Alberta Beef Producers.I informed them, that as a proud Albertan that fought the passing of c-68 and the long gun registry,I could no longer in good conscience support their organization if they pursued their proposal.

i really hate to say it but without farmers/ranchers of some sort most city dwellers would starve to death.if it is not an alberta beef farmer it is one in ontario,or argetina. you also realize that imported items are usually more expensive than a lot of local stuff due to shipping cost etc.the beef industry pulls a lot of weight with the goverments be it provincial/federal.the alberta goverment might not let other beef to be imported.or they might inact the law these guys are asking for regardless, dollars talk.i do not know what the numbers are in alberta but most of canada has less than 15% of the population as hunters, and 15-20% are anti's the remaining 65-70% could go either way.if your numbers are the same if every hunter boycots alberta beef you will not make much of a dent in their industry.

Does anyone have any proof of the allegations against the ABP? It wouldn't surprise me if they did try something like this. If they did I need some ammo to use. My neighbour is on the board of directors.

First of all, I hope you folks out there are able to get this movement killed quickly. Sounds to me like it is just another 'fix' for another imaginary problem brought about by a self-serving group -- and if there's something I hate, its self-serving a$$hats like that trying to impose their will on everyone. I'm not what you consider a 'road hunter', but IMO there's no harm for example, entering your favorite hunting area with an uncased gun next to you, clip in hand, ready to go if the opportunity presents itself. And there are other instances where being uncased presents no harm.

Secondly, Suka, get over yourself. Your brethern crack is nuthing but horsesh!t by a big-feelin, arrogant SOB. deadyes post never said Alberta should follow NS rules, he was just stating the current NS rules, which frankly are worse than NB's which I never thought imagineable. Also, I believe the intent of his post was to point out that today, more and more stupid rules are going to be proposed by more and more ignorant people, but he didn't say you have to accept them. Hopefully, we all fight these foolish proposals as they pop up. And what does the size of NS vs AB matter besides the idea that just because you are bigger, you think you are more important? With the east coast economy the way it is, there is only 1 reason the 'brethern' are out there, and that is to earn a few dollars to help support their families. Ask any of them where they'd rather live, work and raise a family, it's not out in AB. Sorry to burst your bubble but there was no need to take that where you took it. IMO, you should be looking to gather as much support as you can from anyone who will offer it, not alienating whole areas of the country.
