Firearms restrictions being proposed in Alberta.

You and I are very close to agreeing with each other, and I see your very valid points. Something is always better than nothing, and I still tend to think that some land owners are doing nothing. Just the fact that a single guy on a ATV is seen patroling his own land, at peak hours, will cut down on tresspass and poaching.

Some landowners are likely doing little and have accepted the situation. Others do what they can. Don't forget hunting season generally is at peak season for grain farmers. Their plate is full already.

I think the key here is to present a reasonable position. Understanding the frustration of the farmer which has led to this proposal to the SRD and at the same breath, promoting the most sensible solution, which is the enforcement of current laws and regulations. Thus ensuring we are not victimized by the actions of a very, find resolution of the farmers concerns and move forward in a positive manner. I think this is a key to victory. Firing off emotionally charged letters offering nothing more than a dissenting view without potential solutions does not move us forward. I think good letters will present a more logical position which few will be able to argue.

The first thing, if ABP want to correct this mistak, they need to scrap that proposal now. This has started a serious #### storm which will not go away and will become bigger as the days go on.

It reads like something straight from the Liberal Party office in downtown Toronoto.

The proposal directly targets "hunting season", and "hunters". Why not make it year round and effect everyone on the roads, then, including ranchers too? As the way this proposal stands, even a poacher can have a gun and ammo unlocked in the vehicle as long as it's not a hunting season (which is even worse). Scrap this stupid piece of ####. It's really an anti-hunting and gun piece of crap. Get rid of it.

Your right, it directly targets hunters and hunting season....that is when the ABP members are dealing with the problem. Just scrapping the proposal the SRD will not solve the issue. I would suggest a well worded letter pressuring the government to deal with this "poachers" and criminals. We should distance ourselves from the people causing the problem, since they are not law abiding gun owners and provide sensible solutions to the problem...which is increased enforcement. Would not agree? We are trying to fight an emotional response from the ABP membership...would it not be a better position to be viewed as the more sensible person in the room? Offering a reasonable and effective solution?

That is how we defeat this....

An increased enforcement of laws already on the books is the answer. However, Canada, seems to lack "sense" when it comes to hunting and gun laws. I would always feel their is still a chance, but as long as the ABP continues to push this proposal, they are building walls between ranchers and hunters that may never come down. Also, as long as this proposal stands, you will see more hunters and gun owners joining a boycott of Alberta Beef Products. This is our (meaning hunters and firearms owners) only means of defense against these kinds of laws and ideas. We simply put our money back inside our wallets, and keep it there.

In fact you have it a bit wrong. The SRD and the government will be ones at fault if they enact it. Which by the way has not occured nor has any consultation to the changes which starts later this year. The ABP has a problem raised by its members. There are a small group of "problem" gun owners which are creating this issue. The status quo is not acceptable. In terms of building walls between ranchers and hunters.....heck the problem is some "hunters" are breaking the walls, and stealing the bricks. Do you think the ranchers care if they hurt the feelings of hunters? Nope...the problem is they paint all hunters the same now....particularly since the enforcement has not mitigated the problem. So now we gun owners are painted the same as a poacher.....same as gangsters in TO and legal gun owners. What is the expression....every illegal gun started as a legal gun....how about every poacher started out as a legal hunter?

Unfortunately, some gun owners will send threatening letters full of spite and emotional to the ABP and Government offering no solution. My point remains we can dig deep into the emotional well, ##### about anti gun and everything else but at the end of the day, in practical terms we must defeat this with logic and realistic solutions. Enforcement seems to be the best way to present this...

I love road hunting for deer in Alberta. Pure adrenaline as you attempt to cut off a high speed monster buck. It gets interesting when 4 city boys from Calgary tell you that it was thier buck that you just shot. It really pizzes them off when the plate says BC. When your host knows all the roads, gates, and has permisssion it is a great way to hunt.

I do not consider a person who shoots out the window a poacher. They are a law breaker.

A poacher in my eyes is the serial slaughter/butcher/meat sale type or the type that shoots game out of season.

the law regards you as a poacher.

Son, you seem to blame everyone, except the ABP.

Think I'll stick with the boycott, thanks.

I sent out a email to a pile of guys I work with today about this. Most of them being farmers, ranchers and hunters. One guy came in to talk to me and said that most of the road hunters in his area are local farmers and ranchers. I know he is telling the truth as I have been there many times and seen it first hand.

I know around our place as well, allot(not all) of the road hunters are the local farmers and ranchers. I never hesitate to call SRD and or the RCMP. Had a few pretty good confrontations as well when I see guys doing stupid sh1t...

Morph brought up an interesting view - one that likely will surface as well before long - Can we just change the ABP with Imperial Oil or Suncor or CNRL? Can you imagine the storm that would bring if it was a big bad oil company proposing to this exact thing to their leased lands?

or - would everyone back them saying that the problem is out of hand and this is a good thing to do?

Hardly.

Have you actually read my posts? I blame the poachers and unethical "hunters" who are the root of the problem. I also comment that I don't agree with the ABP position. My point remains, if your going to have an argument, offer something to fix the problem. Boycott all you want. If your going to write a letter, push for improved enforcement rather than silly regs.

Son? OK Grandpa..... what the heck was that :)
