Ruger #1, .303 British.

Just heard from my rep again; nothing new since we heard 'soon' a few weeks ago. I also inquired about the rumor of a run in 30/40 Krag and my rep said that he had heard this is a run of 100 for cabelas.

what is with the new kings stuff? How do you figure the Ruger #1 will be the new king of .303s? I won't be any more accurate than a P14 or a Ross, and it won't be any more storied than the Lee Enfield. And it won't be the only nice single shot as there are some awesome commercial Martinis. A new prince in teh line of the venerable .303, but not the king.

Did you order one?

:p

Gate, as much as I actually do repect you and your veiws....other than the New King, I think you've lost it buddy. Can't imagine what is cool about a .303 in a No.1. So it's got a rim, I just don't get it. Could some one esplain it.

It's fun...:) I have enough rifles that I can hunt the entire planet for the rest of my life and not need another....But this is about fun!

I've always wanted a Ruger #1, ...just never enough to buy one chambered in most cartridges (especially rimless cartridges) because I'd prefer it in a bolt action. All the rimless cartridges from .204 Ruger to .585 Nyati- I'd rather have in a bolt action...

However, I do like the .303 British cartridge, and, short of spending some good $$$ on a bolt action complete custom job, it's really only available in the big and heavy Enfield rifles or the SMLE.

So the rimmed .303 makes perfect sense in the #1, it's a great cartridge, it's got lots of Canadian history, and I know I will take it out to hunt blacktails on nice days, and I expect many will use it for all sorts of other beasts across Canada.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy into this, I don't really care what others feel are the best choice for themselves, but for me, this is the first time i've said "RUger #1 is the RIGHT choice".

If you have to ask, you won't get it ;)

Don't have the cash but if I did i would probably still end up taking home a nice little Martini Metford I know of or a Lee Speed I have been eyeing up for a while.

Martini's are kinda cool, but there are plenty of older rifles chambered in .303. If I wanted an older rifle or a Martini, I'd get one chambered in something else.:)

ummm in .303 there aren't. The .303 design coincided with the Lee Metford, Martini Metfords are rearsenaled .450/577 rifles. Kind of hard to get older than a factory refurbished firearm that pre-dates the cartridge.

Gatehouse when your right, your right on!:)
An affordable Farquharson style single shot 'light' rifle chambered in .303 British oozes Class, sophistication & an overall knowledge of firearms & hunting that blows a mere mortal's mine to porridge!:D If you can't appreciate this rifle, that's fine... NOW GO BACK TO YOUR BAG OF DORITOS, CHEAP AMERICAN BEER & watch the Simpsons!:p:D:nest:

True enough. I was just talking to one of my shooting buddies and he tells me he's seen a few Martinis in 303 Br and actually saw one at a recent gun show in this area. He hit's them all so I've asked him to keep his eyes open for one for me. When one does materialise, it'll be a good mate for a BSA Martini I have in 22 LR.

Until I do get one, I'll keep myself occupied doing my 303 Br shooting with a pair of Jungle Carbines I have.

I want one of these badly. I would use it for everything! Well, by everything I mean whitetails, black bear, and moose which is totally reasonable for the .303's abilities. Then when it's nicely worn in, I'd hand it on to my boy - just seems like it's "that kind" of rifle, very attractive yet sturdy and functional, rare yet entirely practical.

Too bad my "gun money" this year is spent on an M14b and probably a Maverick 88.

Rimless cartridges in single shots and double rifles are wonky; both generally extract fired cases most reliably if they are rimmed. There are actually a number of rimmed versions of rimless cartridges created specifically for this reason:

-.222 Rimmed
-7x57Rmm
-.375 Flanged Magnum (.375 H&H)
-7x65Rmm (7x64mm Brenneke)
-etc.
