300 Fireball AR15 (Brass forming - post #150)

1 - Suputin, unless you're shooting your rifle by Saturday around noonish, I'mma gonna winnnnn... :p

2 - Henry is top-notch and I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for quality brass or bullets.

And... I, too, am interested in 147-150gn .308 pulls. I can get them cheaply from the US at present, but I can get them FASTER from you Henry - provided you have them. I'm down to my last few hundred, so I'll need more at SOME point.

So now it becomes a race to find out who will get to shoot their 300 FB first. Yardie, Doc or Sup? I think Yardie might be out of contention if he doesn't get fired before this weekend. Doc has his rifle and is ready to rock but my rifle is close, ohhhhh so close.

It is so close I can feel it, it is like that feeling I get in the end of my ...... oh sorry. :)

:adult:

Anyway, its clooooooose.

Hmmm...well seeing as I had to come home early from work for an appointment; I'm going to be molesting 'Persephone' within 7 hours.

I'm all set up and ready for reloading, going to stop by P&D today to pick up a few items I overlooked.

Big HUGE shout out to Doc M for the patience he's shown with taking the time to answer all my questions off line...

However...as for...

...unless you're shooting your rifle by Saturday around noonish, I'mma gonna winnnnn... :p

*Hairy eyeball to Doc* I'm off work till Tuesday with nothing but time...!

:nest:

Heheheheheheh...!

I'm following whatever directions you give me to get to your place - little help? - and then I am going to stab you RIGHT in the face.

TWO times.

Whatever, I'm still cooler than you. :p

And Yardie comes from behind to take the lead in the thrilling final leg to the finish.

But don't write off Sup yet as my 300 has finally come together into one piece and is ready to be test fired. :adult: Maybe I'll go out in the evening and beat you both to the post cause I already have 50 rounds ready to go. :kickInTheNuts:

Even if I don't, mine is still cooler than both of yours. :nest:

Pics to come .......

Lie back and enjoy the view boys. It is OK to touch yourself if you feel the desire. :)

Alriiiiiiight... finally some decent pics of my setup. Not as ###y as Suputin's, but it works...

First - here's the 'rig' as-is, in 5.56x45:
IMG_3800.jpg

The front sight is going to stay, for now... until I buy another front BUIS. The .300 Fireball is slated to get the YHM front BUIS (just need to bolt it on; will do it before the next range trip) and is presently wearing the Bushmaster carry handle as a rear sight. Eventually the .300 is getting some glass... but finances, as always, win out over desires.

Now - here are the 5.56 and .300 Fireball bits side-by-side:

The .300 Fireball upper alone:

The rest are all .300 Fireball.

Alright... nice rig, but how do you feed it? Well, right now I'm necking up .221 Fireball brass... but messed around with a bit of .223/5.56 conversion tonight too.

I have the Redding 2-die set; it comes with a .284" expander "carrot" which necks from .221 to .284; then you change buttons and put on the .308 button for a final size. This worked extremely well - I lost many fewer cases than with my "homebrew" ground one-step process. Converting 100 more cases today, I lost only about 6 (and 4 of these were me being retarded and in a rush - I dented the neck because of misalignment with the initial expansion button; only 2 were split necks, which I can't do anything about). Using the one-step expander, I must've set back the shoulder on about ten or so in the first hundred.

Alright, here are the pics of the three steps, side-by-side:

Left: .221 Fireball, "factory".
Middle: .221" to .284."
Right: Finished .308" neck and full-length sizing.

IMG_3818.jpg

An intentional mid-way stop between the .284" and .308" expansion step - you can see how gentle the taper is.

IMG_3824.jpg

And.... prime it, seat a 147gn ex-M80 ball projectile:
IMG_3827.jpg

So, that's the process starting with a .221 Fireball.

Starting with a .223 or 5.56 case:

IMG_3832.jpg

I had some .223 cases with dented necks, and just ran them through the .300-221 sizing die with the EXPANDER REMOVED. I can't overstate how important that step is... lol! Good luck trying to toss a .308" expander into a .223 neck without putting some SERIOUS taper on it.

Above, from left:
1 - .223, "as is."
2, 3, 4 - Run through the body portion of the die (no expander)
5, 6, 7 - Pre-cut at the shoulder, then run into the body portion.

Note that when cutting at the shoulder, I've left 30 to 40 thou of room; the calipers below should read no greater than 1.400" - the trim length of a .221 Fireball, which also goes for a .300 Fireball.

IMG_3835.jpg

Being that they're at 1.435", I've got about 35 thou to trim - which I would do in an RCBS trimmer.

Finally, here's what's coming to the range with me Saturday. A few things are missing - you can't see the shellholder, since I tucked it into the die case, and I'm bringing a digital scale that I use to measure charge weight. The bullets in the recycled Sierra case are the 147gn M80 pills. Oh, and of course my Shooting Chrony 'Gamma' will be coming too... ;)

The powders are H110, Lil' Gun, and W296.

And if you want load data... I'll be forwarding my data to the guys at ATRS - and I will allow them to distribute it as they see fit with the purchase of a new AR15 .300 Fireball upper.

Needless to say, I'm friggin' excited about this Saturday... if you're in Edmonton, I'll be the guy shooting a lot at the 25yd target board and loading at the bench at the SPFGA range. :dancingbanana:

One final thing:

I can't recommend Imperial Sizing Wax (Redding) highly enough. I've never seen something work so well for case-forming, in such slight amounts.

I've definitely had a good gulp of the Imperial Wax Kool-Aid now... :runaway:

Does this mean the Honeymoon is over...!?

Well looks like I'm out of the race, unless my dies show up today/tomorrow I'm now simply a spectator.

Doc, nice informative post! You should almost make that a new post "How to Make 300 Fireball ammo" so it doesn't get lost in 15 pages of this post.

BTW 150gr bullets are a good mid-ground weight cause you can go both supersonic as well as subsonic. But don't forget to try the lightweight stuff as well as the heavyweight stuff just for fun.

Don't forget the allen key to adjust the gas block though.

Thanks Broheim! Praise from Caesar himself! :D

I might put together a REALLY detailed photo montage of the entire process, going both ways, including my "jig" for cutting the shoulder from .223 brass... then I'd definitely start a new thread on it.

Actually, as the thread starter, you could edit the first post title/text to say "Brass forming instructions, post #150"?

I think a mixture of both would be great! :)

Oh, and for now, I'm going to put a link to post #150 in my sig line: "Forming .300 Whisper/.300 Fireball brass? Instructions here."

Oh... and since I didn't reply to this post yet...

Yes, I'm going to use the 147gn pills as a "middle" solution - but I fully plan on getting some 180gn, 200gn, etc. .308 projectiles to put in the subsonics eventually.

And of course some 110gn or 125gn pills for some ULTRA-fast (well, for the .300 Fireball anyway) loads. That's my final priority though.

Step 1 - get a "feel" for the mid-subsonic loads. Definitely going to be working DOWN, to avoid blockages.

Step 2 - develop some heavy-sub loads.

Step 3 - go for broke, with the gas system choked way down and the loads amped up.

Step 4 - collect underpants.

Step 5 - profit.
