Handgun Hunting; If you could, what would you use?

a 416 rigby would be awesome too...... but i doubt i could hold onto the fricken thing for even the first shot LOL

A taurus judge .410 would be excellent for grouse and other small targets of opportunity, especially convenient for getting some fresh dinner when working/fishing/big-game hunting in the bush.

Youtube some of the accuracy tests with that thing. You would never hit any damn animal with anything you fire out of one of those.

I would use a .22 for grouse.

It makes sense to me to allow handguns to be used for hunting. They are tools that should be used for more than punching holes in paper.

The 500 S&W can definately be a little brutal to handle but it does shoot well.

I agree 100% :) I'd likely pack along my Ruger Mk I .22 for small game & my new S&W 629 5" .44Mag would see action when calling bull moose into handshakin' range ;)

Otherwise known as the "pucker test". b: Good example of a situation a rifle would be hard to bring to action.

That's a great example of how handy a side arm would be when hunting. How many people have shot a Moose/Deer/Elk etc. and had it down but not dead. Get up close and try to aim a scoped rifle at the head is harder than one would think and often ends with multiple shots and meat loss due to poor placed shots. A hand gun would work great.

Agreed. It'd probably help with a clean kill as pointed out it'd take less rounds for a clean shot, and the bullet would likely expand better and transfer the energy better at close range for the finisher than a fast rifle bullet.

It would be great if we could hunt with a handgun. Only problem would be booking another week off work for the hunt.

I fail to see how that's a problem. ;)

Taurus raging judge for this guy

No kill like overkill

ha:

So far a fun thread with some ###y hand cannons, keep it commin people. :D

For small game and pests I'd like my Nork M93 as it's the only .22lr I have. Would've been really handy in a few dozen encounters where the gopher pops up a few meters away.

For deer and a general-use outdoors pistol I'd use my GP100 loaded with some heavier for caliber hard cast flat points.

Really, though, if we were free people and allowed to carry of pistols in the wilderness to plink, hunt and protect ourselves I'd probably just get a Redhawk and take it everywhere.

I have hunted in the USA (deer) with a S&W 44 mag - lots of fun. No deer.

If I was doing it regularly I would get a remington XP-100 in 308

Smith and Wesson 629 - a classic

Smith and Wesson 617 - a fun little gopher blaster

Glock G20 - a good backup gun, nice and light, decent power, very reliable

For big game, I could select from the following contenders;

7mmTCU
6.5mmTCU
35 rem

Or an xp-100 in 7/08

Or a 629

Or a blackhawk in 454colt.

Or, or,.....I might buy something new! Yes, that's it! In celebration of handgun hunting becoming legal in Canada, I would buy something new!

Woo-hoo! When's it happening?:)

Colt Anaconda or Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt loaded fairly warm with 255g Keith style semi wadcutters.I'd take a lever gun in the same caliber for longer shots.I'd also carry some carts loaded with Trail Boss behind a 200g LSWC for small game.

As general carry gun for woods hunting of white tail or black bear, I'd likely use a western style revolver in 45 colt.
When doing a drive, in heavy brush where a guy has to climb over dead falls, and scale rock ridges having both hands free would be a lot safer than hanging on to a rifle with one hand. More convenient than having a slung rifle swinging about while you're balanced on a log crossing a creek too.

Since we may never see handgun hunting in Canada again, I am thinking about getting one of those "Mares' Leg" lever guns in 45 COlt. Maybe the closest thing we get to it!:p
