JR Carbine Unboxing, Firing & Takedown Videos

Yeesh. How many times does the Canadian firearms pricing horse have to be beaten? d:h:

And just think: it only took 45 posts before the thread started to go sideways!

9. Cheaper is always better. Except when it isn't.

This is probably my favourite. Or the kidney one. ;)

Getting back on-track, here's a question for you... Since you mentioned your CX4 Storm, how would you rate/compare the two in terms of easy-of-use, ergonomics, weight, feel, etc. Arguably the JR is more modular in terms of accessories, but the CX4 Storm does have the compact bullpup design going for it; magazine capacity and base price is approximately the same for both (albeit this wouldn't include a NR barrel for the CX4).

I hate this time of year. I look at the calendar, start thinking spring and nice shooting weather, and then walk outside to the reality of -15C, 30 klick winds and blowing snow.

{censored}

Anyhoo, I really wanted to get a better idea of how accuracy might be with the JR, so I mounted a 4x facog, dragged my poor old ex kitchen table and chair out of the shop, stacked some stuff to make a (surprisingly decent) rest, and did some quick shooting...

The center group is 5 rounds of 115gr CCI Blazer fired at ~17m. The box was moved out to ~45m for the top group (the box blew over so the target is sideways), which was shot with 10 rounds of 115gr American Eagle:

Not bad IMO. Quite a bit of elevation difference between the two ranges/ammo types, but I'm happy with the group size for now. I'll grab some 124gr ammo this weekend, and hopefully get some decent conditions to do some better testing next week.

Been looking online and making some calls the price on the JR Carbine has dropped by close to a 100 in the US,Wonder if we will see them come down soon. let alone get more of them into Canada

The Beretta is King of happiness in left-handed land. I have yet to find another firearm that so easily and completely converted over for those of us that shoot from the correct (as opposed to the right) shoulder. :)

Been a while since I had the Storm, but I'd say its ergonomics were superior, and balance also. Weight was possibly similar, though the JR looks like it should weigh more. Maybe because of the ugly handguard.

Compared to the CX4, the JR mag release is a bit of a pain (especially for a lefty), it doesn't have a last shot hold open, requires tools to disassemble, doesn't have an ambi safety, doesn't come with any sights, has an unbelievably shiny silver bolt handle (mine is now painted black) and a somewhat mismatched finish. Oh, and the handguard is ugly.

The plus side for the JR is it mostly feels like an AR, uses many standard AR parts and accessories, kinda looks like an AR, uses Glock mags and is significantly cheaper (esp. at $729) than a non-res CX4. And it comes with an ugly handguard at no extra cost.

For some reason I just didn't like the Storm though, and sold it not long after acquiring it. In spite of its faults/shortfalls I prefer the JR, and if I can get a different handguard :)p) I think it'll be a keeper.

What handguard would you like to have on there Farmer Harv. The Spikes fake can would look pretty cool aswell. How many ftf or fte's do you think you've had so far?

I just handled one at a local shop (Al Simmons). The pictures don't do it justice. Looked and felt well-made, everything operated smoothly, and the "ugly" front handguard wasn't so much in person.

Can it be set up to eject rounds on the right side while the cocking handle is on the left side?

Yep. That's how it comes setup out of the box.

Mine is now converted to right-hand bolt and left eject, but it might get switched back to right eject. After years of being able to check the chamber without moving much, it seems weird to have to roll the rifle over to have a look in there.

The extractor is held to the bolt with a small roll pin, and you drive the roll pin out, switch the extractor & spring to the other side and install the roll pin again. You can kinda see the hole for the pin and the extractor here:

The ejector is built into the offside cover plate. You simply unscrew it and move it to the other side:

Not the quickest method to change over that I've seen, but it sure beats not having the option at all. :)

Here's an almost focused pic of the bolt face showing the extractor and ejector:
