Ontario Turkey hunting. Anyone getting exicited yet?

another quick question whats everyone hunting out of a blind or just sitting in front of a tree? I just picked up a redhead enigma blind (which is currently set up in my living room) and I may try that even though I have a new turkey vest with a nice attached padded seat, last one at Bass pro with no tag so they gave it to me for 29.99 retails for 89.99 :)

I hunt out of a pop up blind
it's great, I can have a sandwich, I bring a gameboy, i have my coffee, don't have to be as carefull with my movement, and when it rains, I'm still fine!

I've done the run and gun thing, but chances are the turkey will see and or hear you, and you'll have no idea they were there.

I was actually eating pizza and was having a beer watching hunt tv in the blind when she came in, she just laughed and shook her head.

LOL I already love the mental image.... "uhh....... hi Honey....shhh... I'm stalking the pizza boy"

This is hopefully going to be my first year for turkey this year. Got ym DVD this week, exam is tomorrow and then its a weekend of annoying my folks with turkey calls in the house and reading up on EVERYTHING last minute.

TO be honest, it was spur of the moment. I thought it was too late for me this year, then early april I found out you can do the course over DVD and with a local examiner...so I am actually able to get in on it this year!

Only problem is that I need to find somewhere to hunt. The original spot I was going to use turned out to have been "diminished" over winter...flock went down to about 4 birds, and the landowner told me its all small birds (probably hens, since she isn't that good at identifying birds, but a close friend, so I trust her).

So now I am scrambling to find a new place with more birds in the Ottawa area....My luck is always crappy! haha

I need to look around kemptville maybe or ask my buddy a little East of Ottawa (he said there are turkeys on his property).

Anyway, wish me luck folks! First year hunting turkey, so if you see a young guy walking around with his head hung low, don't laugh - I just suck! :p

Being that opening day falls on a holiday this year, I predict a pile of birds are gonna die on Monday

Having checked the long range weather forecast for southern Ontario, I predict many Toms and jakes will be laughing all the way to pick up their dates! No hunters around.

It will be pouring all week in Southern Ont. :(

I'm hunting Monday rain or shine. Yesterday I patterned my shot gun and reminded myself that the gun doesnt fit me quite right and 2 oz loads kick pretty good. Having said that I got 40 pellets in the kill zone at 30 m and didnt bother to see what it does at 40 m because I hunt in mostly thick forest with shorter potential shots to take. Good luck to everyone.

I thought Turkey's didn't like dense brush and thick forest, but rather more spaced out areas? (This is based on what friends have told me and what I read while perusing forums online).

I've found that turkeys like to be in the fields when it rains so it should make for easier hunting, especially later in the day.

I love hunting in the rain. Its quieter, and there are less people in the bush.

I've got Monday already to go. Heading out tomorrow to get a buddy setup for his first hunt then back out Saturday just before dawn to listen for goobles. That should help me solidify exactly where I'm going to setup Monday.

Also have a BIG bear bothering the cattle on one property. There is a dead cow in the bush which apparently died giving birth. The farmer asked me if I can shoot the bear on his behalf, so I'll need to check with the MNR to see what they say about that. I guess the bear has been causing some issues with the calving cattle.

Turkey AND a Bear! Well that should be an exciting hunt! :p (And if you don't shoot anything, you can lob off a piece of that dead cow and try to convince your non-knowledgeable friends that its bear meat....:p)

I've managed to get the owner of the farm I'm hunting to scout for me. Got a message this morning that there are 15 turkeys sitting about 10 feet from where I normally park my truck. Is it legal to hunt from a parked vehicle? :) This did confirm exactly where I plan to set up monday morning though. Rain or Shine, away we go. I'm not the biggest fan of sitting in a blind for turkey as find they can sneak up on you from anywhere and just can't see as well from a blind.
All the best everyone!!!

Nope!
This will be my 3rd year shooting that load with an xxfull choke
Works just fine, no issues, and I get a great pattern!
Wad stays in good shape

It's a proven fact that you will get a tighter pattern with Federal Flitecontrol wad if you use a impcyl or mod choke. Full & tighter chokes will still work, but they impede the desired function of the flitecontrol wad but slowing it down & also deforming it. This adversely affects the pattern. I got this information directly from Federal.

All you new turkey hunters go out Sunday night and scare the birds of the roost that will help you get a bird!!!

Going out tomorrow rain or shine to set up 2 or 3 blind locations for the coming month and looking for signs, scat and foot prints!

Hopefully I can get my daughter (3 1/2) out on a day the birds want to show up.

Scouted this am. Found a good flock on one property and spent 30 min watching a monster tom on another. Looks like a promising season ahead! Now I just have to pattern my percussion 16 guage. :D
