Weatherby Fan's

As per request:

They're big game, just not BIG game :p

Both taken with a 30-378. The Micro buck at 60yds (quite the test I know) and the Elk at around 200yds
That's my luck, I pack around an 11# 4ft long beast of a gun to kill game at 30-30 distances :D Both kills were pretty decisive though. :p

Good post and great photos. Thanks for sharing:). I think we've all experienced moments of being over gunned in a hunting situation. My biggest example of 'over kill' was a few years back. Coming back to camp after an early morning Moose hunt, I spotted a 'ditch chicken' and shot for it's head, using my Sako in 338WM with full length wood. Result, :redface:badly wounded 'ditch chicken' and a buddy hollering, "Get a bigger gun!!!"

Anyway, you can go for what you 'want' in a big game rifle, and it's "quality level" but the bottem line or end result required is the animal down, quickly!!

For me, picking a rifle, going for decent & reliable within financial reason choice, Winchester, Ruger and Savage come to mind for NA manufacturers. As I see it, a step above and with more of a European slant, first and foremost, Schultz & Larsen. Followed closely by Husqvarna and Sako. If you've got access to big bucks, the choices are limitless, one of which I've already made mentioned of is Westley Richards. The big question, as I see it is, where do you draw the line?? Some seem to think, those choices at the ;ower dollar end of the scale are 'cheap s**t'. Those above, "good stuff"but those on the top end, "You don't need to go to those lengths". Again, where do you draw the line in the sand so to speak?

There has been a lot of talk how expensive 300Wby brass and ammo is. During my 25 years of using my 300Wby I never fired factory ammo. The brass I used was 375 H&H
Winchester. Then necked down to 300Wby. The necks were then outside neck turned
to 0.0015" radial neck clearance. This brass was then fire formed with Cream of wheat and 700x powder. At the time Winchester Mag brass had the strongest and thickest
webs. Cases lasted fore ever, and were a lot better and cheaper and more accurate than factory brass.

My wife has shot 2 moose an elk and about 3 deer with the 7W. I have shot a moose and a mule buck with the same gun. I shot a white tail buck with the 460W. I can't remember them all as I used a few lesser brands I don't want to mention also.

To be fair, the Vanguard is a Howa, not a Weatherby design.

And for under $500 US Howa can produce a rifle for Weatherby, that Weatherby is guaranteeing to shoot sub MOA, yet the Weatherby designed Mark Vs costing double, triple, or even more only come with a 1-1/2" accuracy guarantee.

Japanese must have more confidence...:D

Nice pics Marcoman...I really hope to shoot an Elk someday,I love eating them but only had the chance to hunt them once in my life...wmu 406...before opeing day scouting dad and I found a 7x7 bull, however .....for the next week of hunting we didnt hear let alone see a single elk

Way to go man!

Unfortunately, both of my 300RUM rifles were sold soon after the eye specialist told me that I would likely never get much usable vision back in my right eye. Luckily, he was wrong, but in the meantime, I sold every gun that I owned, as well as my binoculars, rangefinder etc. I sold 22 guns in a few months, and I have spent the past two years rebuilding my firearms collection. In spite of the fact that I killed nine elk and two moose with my 300 RUMs,I actually miss my 7mmstws more than the 300RUMs, and that is why I have the Cooper 7mmstw on order. I am very much doubting that I will have the STW in time, so I will either use my 280AI or my new 260.

Here's another shot with one of the Weatherby's. He only scores a little over 140 IIRC, but he was the first buck shot with my .270Wby magnum.

I did the Shoulder mount myself:) A good friend helped with the caping and some of the other more finicky aspects (ears & nose being most tricky) but otherwise it was up to me. ;)

Good practice for when the BIG one comes along!
