Ruger American Rifle

It's hideous! I hope this doesn't mean that Ruger will be raising prices on the Model 77s.

It's called "Mcdonaldization" and the process will be the undoing of us all I am afraid. Ruger started with a very good product with their production rifles. In order to be competitive they introduced their "Hawkeye" line with the coarse finishes. The next evolution in the race to the bottom is this new rifle. Who knows where it will end ..............

Chill...they just wanted a piece of the very large "budget/new hunters" market. They are still going to keep on making all their other "high end" models.

So is the Axis...these are budget hunting rifles...not high end, pretty ones!

No argument here. My concern is that now that Ruger has decided to enter the bottom of the barrel market, they will try to market the 77 as a sort of "premium" rifle and charge accordingly, which will in turn result in them selling more of their cheap rifles, which I wouldn't be surprised to hear had a higher profit margin, being less expensive to produce.

Sadly this rifle and others like it, IE Savage Axis, Mossberg 4x4, TC Venture among others are a reflection of the times.

This generation has been raised in a Wallmart today throwaway tomorrow world.
Ruger will sell a sh!tload of these.

For those wondering where this junker came from. Ruger hired the designer of the Savage Axis last year.

Other than the cheap looking stock it doesn't look too bad. I like the tang safety, and the rotary mag looks like they got it from the Browning X Bolt. Who knows, maybe it will be all right?

My response was more in line with expounding on 1899's statement which I agree with 100%

This single move by Ruger doesn't bother me in and of itself. If someone likes the rifle go they can and buy it. It is the direction the manufacturers are moving towards that dismays me. I am old enough to remember when the manufacturers of everything from cars to firearms to houses stressed the quality of their products rather than the bottom line. Somewhere along the way the new consumerism came about which made the majority of us believe that quantity was more important than quality.

BTW I love the old Ruger canoe paddle stock! LoL ;)

I'm about to purchase my first centerfire rifle, and I'm wondering what all the 'budget rifle' attacks are about. I'm very interested in the Tikka T3 Lite @599$. That seems like a great value and nothing to sneeze at. Are you guys saying Ruger is attacking the 250$ (savage axis type) rifles instead of the 599$ Tikka/Thompson Center/Remington type rifles? I have a hard time believing that just because a rifle is priced at 500-600$ means it must suck.

Remember the "K" car? Without it we wouldn't have the Dodge Ram today!

It seems every rifle manufacturer is making a less expensive rig these days, but thats okay, in my dad's time they had the cheap surplus rifles. These won't do anymore because the young people want their rifle to have plastic camo stocks and cool mags and optical sighting systems.

We can't all afford $1000+ Kimbers and Coopers, some guys have to buy the cheap stuff just so they can have a rifle. Who knows? Maybe it will be okay?
