Valmet Hunter to M76 *Updated January 30th, 2013*

Aye, there are semi auto AK-47 variants in legal gun owners' hands (non restricted even!) and somehow the entire fabric of our f**king society has not torn itself to shreds all around us.

That's because Valmet owners have been 'chosen'... otherwise all hell would have broken loose...

Yes, the irony of these being non-restricted is hilarious!!

For those that don't know, IWI bought stock Valmet parts right off the shelf to make the Galil.

Once this one is complete I'll look at converting one of my others to a Galil.

They also bought the equipment to make the Galil on from Valmet - that's right, 2 rifles built on the same machinery, 1 NR and 1 Prohib.

No Sir.

The story I always read about the Valmets (someone correct me if I'm wrong) was the government had gave a bunch of them to the natives for hunting years before the gun laws went retarded.

So because Natives had them already in however many numbers, they couldn't prohibit them because god f**king forbid we offend a minority group......

So in completely logical government thinking, these became the only variant of the AK that could be owned non restricted and didn't magically walk around on their own at night and kill babies like all the other evil variants.....

If it's true it's a god damned shame that they didn't give the natives a whole whack of semi auto FN FAL's while they were at it :(

LOL
Very true

Since the Valmet is legal here, it would be nice if a Canadian company started producing them.

Especially if they could keep them under $700.

The problem is that only Valmet can make Valmets, and only did so in Finland, and no longer produce firearms. Valmet was a firearms company that was absorbed by Tikka - much the same as Diemaco was absorbed by Colt Canada. What you're saying is exactly the same as saying I wish a Canadian company would start producing Diemacos.

enefgee,

The only this would fly, is if a Canadian company (or anyone else for that matter) got the production rights from Valmet, and produced them as a licensee...

I believe a US company tried that about 10 years ago, and Sako was not interested.

** Edit **

I would be nice to have a source of reasonably priced magazines!

I was able to jamb a Thurmold M-14 mag into the hunter with 5 dummy rounds, I could rack the action/hammer would drop/round would eject with all 5.
I was also able to do the same with M305 mags but they required a little emery cloth sanding on the sides.
I have access to a mig welder so the M305 mags seems to be a viable option as they only require 2 little tabs welded on. Of course these are I tight fit and don't exactly fall free. I suspect a little dremel cut on the back corners of the mag down 1.5" and reweld would loosen it up.

Back in the late 80's there was a couple of guys making and selling modified m14 mags for 308 galils. They worked fine except occasionally (depending on the mag) the bolt would slam the floorplate (causing it to "nosedive") forward into the mag body.

Nice rifle you got there, sir :)

So how is the handguard attached in the picture?

Here's mine:

Note the proper mag latch and original stocks :)

Someone asked about barrel length, .308 M76's came with 18" barrels (20.5" on Hunters). I had mine shortened to 18.5" to keep it NR.

And yeah, it does get a lot of weird looks at the range. At one time someone actually threatened to "report me to range authorities".

Never really benched the rifle, nor did I spend much time reloading for it... but...
- 155gr. HPBT with some Varget shot in about 2" at 100Y.
- Factory 150gr Winchester Power Point... 3"-4"

I wish my Finish would be better, apparently the "Petra" was a popular rifle... so you'd think that parts and accessories would be easier to find.

Thanks, sounds good.
