UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

I've been having a pm conversation concerning full length stocks with another member but thought I'd post my findings here. For those that want matching wood when you put a full stock on your Ranch Hand you will have to replace your forend as well since the factory Rossi wood is not Walnut and will not stain up the same (close but obviously different to the discerning eye) as a Walnut buttstock. So 2 options other than Boyds are:

Bobs Gun Shop has synthetic butt stocks and forends $100 per set. That would look cool with a black duracoated rifle!
Macon Gunstocks makes some gorgeous fancy stock sets.

Macon has the carbine buttstock which appears to be a different configuration (smaller) than the Boyds stock. The lines would probably suit the Ranch Hand better. More expensive than Boyds, not sure what their shipping would be. If I were to do it all over again I might just spend the extra bucks on matching wood and the carbine specific buttstock. But my Ranch Hand is already looking pretty used and banged up because of how much use it's getting. I love this little rifle!

Was just noticing that on my Ranch Hand 44 mag the trigger can be released before the action is fully locked up. Lever is still about 1 1/2" from the stock, the breech bolt is ~1/8" from being fully closed, and the locking bolts are not engaged yet. I can manually push the breech bolt back, so I'm worried if I accidentally pull the trigger and it does fire, would it blow the breech bolt & lever back and break my fingers? This is my first lever gun, is this normal or do I need a gun smith to look at this? I bought this recently from a fellow CGN'er, but it's only been lightly used and I don't believe any modifications have been done to it. So far I've only given it a light lube, and been cycling the action to get a feel for it.

btw - I have tried to do a web search on this, but no luck so far.

I was considering one of these Rossi guns. But after reading about all the problems people are having, it did not seem like a good idea to buy one. I saw a new one at a local dealer and noticed that one of the screws was already damaged, as if carelessly installed. Is the quality of the Rossi really that bad? People seem a lot happier with the Chiappas, although they are harder to find and pricier.

I have one that died. Lemon from the start. However, I fully intend to pickup another one!

They are a handy gun, add a stock and they're a fantastic gun.

Read up on slicking up the Rossi. Cowboy action shooters like the Rossi 92. They're a little rough around the edges but well worth fixing up.

They are like Norinco's.... rough around the edges and the odd lemon. Most of the issues can be tuned and some of the Rossi's (both of mine) are good to go right out of the box! I inspected both of my ranchhands before buying because I had seen rossi 92's in the past that were a bit rough....

The Chiappa I handled in the store didn't impress me for the price. Loose takedown mechanism and below average looking wood and fit.

I find rossi generally good - they work and shoot but don't always look as nice. I don't really care because I shoot my guns and don't leave them in a safe their whole lives, so at the end of the day it's fine with me. I find them to be better than norincos in that they're solid - have had some norcs that self destructed from basic use over time, and hear of it from time to time on this forum. Not so with rossi, or that's my view.

anyone think this would still be non-restricted if we did this?

Non-restricted? How about prohibited. I believe the regs are pretty clear about modifying an existing rifle.

No for a number of reasons. It's already darn short anyways. I think with the rossi ranch hand you couldn't even get a new shorter barrel made from a blank because of the overall length.
