So I gotta ask ... Why so many 1911s??

Nothing shoots .45acp as well as, a nice 1911. The trigger is the key. It makes up for a whole lot of user error. So its a much more fun gun to shoot, and easier to be accurate if you dont have plans on putting in a lot of range time.

Can ams deal kills me, you basically can't afford not to buy another 1911 if your buying 1000 rounds. And don't let the norinco haters get to you.. A little slop in the slide... Sure . Reasonably accurate... Yes does it digest just about anything.. Sure does and the best part is you can hand it to a new shooter and not worry about it getting damaged ..

As for the rest... Excluding para are all awesome

It's still a decent pistol, maybe less and less popular for serious applications, but still decent.
The reason behind the number of 1911s on the market though is the industry behind it.
All the parts, makers, custom gunsmith, grips factories are doing everything they can to keep this platform well and alive.

Let's not forget the weight of history. It was carried by GI's through many big conflicts and for a long time. I would guess that would play a role.

They're a classic design, one of JMB's masterpiece works (though he likely would have claimed that the Hi-Power was better) and they have a huge cult following. Personally if I needed a defensive gun I'd rather have a Glock, but that's likely to catch me some flaming after all the 1911 love in this thread ;)

So you a Para hater and im a norc hater cause they cheaply made, my Para 1911 has gone bang everytime in the last 900 rounds in 2 months, no issues and well built, i looked at a Sig 1911 and it wasnt that much a difference to pay 1300 when my para was 729

So I guess I'll have to play with a 1911 when I finally get myself into a gun shop.

I'm assuming the Norc vs Kimber is just like anything else: cheaper materials with sloppier tolerancese vs. better materials and tighter tolerances?

No, most people that shoot competitions or shoot frequently and are under 50 yrs old think the same way.

So I am patiently awaiting the arrival of my RPAL and while I wait I'm doing a little research to figure what I think I would like to buy and I can't believe how many 1911s are out there! I know the patents were generously sold off by Mr. Browning and thus anyone can produce them, but why are they so popular?

After over a hundred years, nothing seems to beat them.

They're "all American" and old timers and ignorant folks alike still believe after a hundred years since its inception that the 1911 design is still modern and relevant. The reality is its not. Its a classic, it has some great looks as far as aesthetics go, and that's it. The insane number of makers has everything to do with the demand for them.

Not entirely correct. I understand that many shooters will take a $350 Norc 1911 and take advantage of the high-grade forged frame and fit it with higher end accessories to build their race guns. The flip side of the coin is that some 'smiths won't work on 'em because the frame is sufficiently hard that common tools won't do the job.

...or so I've heard.

Slim, single stack grip fits my hand like a glove. Most of the modern double stacks just don't fit in MY hand. Awesome trigger, great balance excellent safety system.
